Cooper

Chapter One: Israel, The Channel of World Blessing

“No Man Careth for My Soul”

Our hearts are stirred and our souls grieved at the plight into which the Jews of central Europe have suddenly been plunged. Like a thunderbolt out of a clear sky the appalling stroke of anti-Semitism has fallen upon tens of thousands of helpless victims. They are being despoiled of all their earthly possessions and are being driven hither and thither without food and shelter facing a dark and uncertain future. God alone knows what will be the outcome.

Every true Christian heart goes out in sympathy for these most unfortunate people. We would like to feed, clothe, protect, and shelter each homeless one. The situation is indeed desperate. Doubtless many of them will literally starve to death while others perish through physical exposure and mental distress.

This appalling condition suggests a greater hunger, one which affects the soul in both time and eternity. These brethren of our Lord according to the flesh have been hungry for the bread of life through the centuries. Nevertheless the church has taken scant notice of this spiritual famine which has been going on in Jewry for nineteen hundred years.

When Jesus was on earth, He set an example for us to follow with reference to the unfortunate. He ministered to the physical needs by healing the sick and by feeding the multitudes on two occasions. His followers should show the same compassion for the unfortunate. They should minister to the sufferings of humanity as they are able. In the midst of the appalling distress of His day He never lost sight of His spiritual mission but always fed the hungry with the bread of life. Since the spirit is destined to live throughout all eternity, we should minister to the spiritual needs and, as we are able, assist in material things.

The picture on page six reveals a hunger far more serious than that of the physical man. Note this dear old Palestinian Hebrew gentleman who is searching the Scriptures at two-fifteen in the morning. He is sincerely seeking for the truth of God as it is revealed in the Old Testament. In the volume which he is studying appear the comments of the rabbis along with the sacred text. He is reading the Word in the light of their interpretations. They did not see the truth concerning the sufferings of Messiah and His atonement but misunderstanding the messianic predictions applied them to the experiences of the nation. In other words, he is looking at the Scriptures through the colored glasses of the misguided Jewish Commentators. He is, however, availing himself of all the light that he has.

Shall we who know Him, “who is the way, the truth, and the life,” withhold the bread of life from hungry hearts like this one and allow them to go out into eternity without hope? Suppose others had acted toward us in such a way, how would we feel and what would be our condition throughout eternity? There are myriads of seeking souls like this dear man. The Lord says to all of us, “Give ye them to eat.”

Israel Created for God’s Glory

The Biblical Research Society has as its objective the dissemination of the truth as extensively in Israel as God permits and also the breaking down of anti-Semitism. To counteract this satanic influence is most important since it clears the way for the presentation of the gospel to the Jewish heart. That God called the Society into existence for this purpose is evident from the fact that He has owned and blessed its labors in behalf of His Chosen People.

But why is the Lord so very much interested in Israel who has, according to the prophets, been rebellious and disobedient against Him throughout the centuries of His special dealings with her? The answer is to be found in the revelation made in the Scriptures concerning the supernatural origin of the Hebrew people. According to the Genesis account, when Abraham and Sarah were past the state of parenthood, God performed a biological miracle which made the birth of Isaac possible. By so doing, He injected new powers and potentialities, physical, intellectual, and spiritual, into the blood stream of the Hebrew people. This miracle alone accounts for the marvelous way in which they have through the centuries survived unspeakably horrible pogroms, have surmounted difficulties from which less virile nations would have drawn back, and have forged forward with incredible success into the foremost positions of influence and power among the nations. Confirmation of this statement is found in such a passage as Isaiah 43:1, in which the Lord declared that He had created Jacob and had formed Israel. God alone performs the creative act; hence whenever this verb is used in the active voice, He is the subject of the sentence. Isaiah delighted to speak of God as “the Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King” (Isaiah 43:15). The Jewish people are as much a result of His creative activity as the heavens and the earth of old together with man were, because the Lord declared that He had created all of them. In comparing the nations to grapevines Isaiah said that Israel was the choicest (Isaiah 5:1-7.). Everyone who accepts the Scriptures at their face value must, therefore, admit that the origin of the Hebrew people and their history are both miracles.

But why did God create and why has He preserved them through these centuries of rebellious disobedience? The answer is found in the statement that He created them for His glory (Isaiah 43:7). According to 46:13 He speaks of His plan to “place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory.” Once more, we read God’s blue print of messianic times in Isaiah 61 where the prophet, after having spoken of her conversion (vs. 3), said that she being saved would be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, “that He may be glorified.” From this we can see that God’s being magnified in the earth is contingent upon the conversion of Israel. Only in the small minority of people who have accepted His salvation through the centuries has He been glorified. The great masses of humanity have either not heard the message of salvation or have rejected it; hence He has not been exalted in the world yet. When, however, Israel is converted to her long-rejected Messiah, He will be given the honor due His Name. The way in which these people will glorify God is by setting forth His praise, because for this purpose He declared that He had formed them (Isaiah 43:21).

This same reason is set forth by Paul in Romans 11. In discussing the Jewish problem the Apostle spoke of their past (ch. 9), their present (ch. 10), and their future (ch. 11). He affirmed that Israel’s being set aside on account of her rejection of Messiah has proved to be the occasion of God’s enriching the world and bringing salvation to the Gentiles. But he declared that, “if the casting away of them is the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?” (Romans 11:15). In this sentence Paul thought of present conditions as if the world were a corpse and of the earth, transformed at the second coming of Christ when Israel is brought back into fellowship with God, as a living person. From this we see that God’s glory, as far as this earth is concerned, is wrapped up with the Jewish people. This being a fact, we can understand why He is so very greatly interested in them and in bringing them back to Himself.

Should we who wish to glorify and honor God be less concerned about these people than He Himself is? Everyone who loves the Lord will answer this question in the negative and will likewise do all within his power to advance His program which will bring glory to Him. My earnest plea is that everyone who knows Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour may take this matter with the seriousness which it demands and ask God to open his eyes to see the present situation and to enable him by His grace to fit his life and plans into that of his Maker.

Israel’s Conversion the Burden of God’s Heart

For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her righteousness go forth as brightness, and her salvation as a lamp that burneth. 2. And the nations shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory; and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of Jehovah shall name.” (Isaiah 62:1,2)

God is interested in the salvation of the individual, and the angels in heaven rejoice whenever a sinner repents and returns to God. At the present time He is calling out from among the Gentiles a people for his name (Acts 15:14). Hence the note of individualism sounds throughout the New Testament. But the one burden which is lying most heavily upon the heart of God is the salvation of Israel. According to the quotation given above He will never have any peace nor take any rest until Zion, that is, the daughter of Zion (the Jewish people) are clothed with His righteousness and their salvation becomes an accomplished fact.

This glorious return to God on the part of Israel will be brought about by preaching the gospel to her. Moses foresaw the national sin of his people, which would be the occasion of their dispersion throughout the world and which they must confess before they will be restored to their own land. “And they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their trespass which they trespassed against me, and also that, because they walked contrary unto me, I also walked contrary unto them, and brought them into the land of their enemies” etc. (Leviticus 26:40,41). Following this quotation is the promise of final restoration to the land. But one must note the fact that she must confess her own iniquity (singular number) and that of her fathers, before she can be restored to the land. Her iniquity and that of the fathers is one and the same thing. The fathers committed the sin and their descendants have participated in it, in that they did not denounce the crime but acquiesced in it. But they will yet see the facts and repudiate the same. This same prediction, only in different words, is found in Hosea 5:15, which declares that “I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offense, and seek my face; in their affliction they will seek me earnestly” (Hosea 6:15). Jehovah came to Israel in the form of Jesus of Nazareth and his own did unto Him as they would. Then He went away and returned to His place and will remain there until they confess “their offense” against Him and seek His face. This they will do “in their affliction” which is “the time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jeremiah 30:7).

Since “they shall confess their iniquity” and “acknowledge their offense” against God, it is evident that they will know what their iniquity and their offense are. What do these predictions presuppose? That the Jews as a race will have learned the facts concerning the national sin and that they will be brought under conviction to the extent of repudiating it. God convicts men of sin by the preaching of the gospel to them. It is His good pleasure to save those who believe through the foolishness of preaching (I Corinthians 1:21). He has committed to men the word of reconciliation (II Corinthians 5:18,19). Therefore these predictions concerning Israel’s repentance and repudiation of the national sin presuppose that the truth of the gospel will be given to her by those who have it. Those who are holding to the ancient faith are the ones who have it; hence they are the ones who will pass on the truth to this people.

This position is further confirmed by the two confessions which Israel as a nation will make. They are recorded in Isaiah 53:1-9 and 63:15-64:12. A careful study of these two passages reveals the fact that they are Israel’s national confession which she will make in the year 1938 plus (x). In that year they will have learned the facts about the ancient martyrdom of their Messiah and will acknowledge their mistaken ideas concerning Him and will proclaim to the world the truth which they will have learned at that time relative to His atonement and to their having been in their sins “of long time.” When they thus learn the facts, make these confessions, and “look unto me whom they have pierced,” God will accept them and reinstate them into His favor.

The interpretation of Zechariah 12:10 which affirms that Israel is to be converted by looking personally upon the Lord Jesus when He returns in glory after the Tribulation does not accord with the facts of Scripture. Those holding this view see no need of evangelizing Israel at the present time. Why should the church concern herself with these people if the Lord is to convert them by the personal, visible coming of Jesus in glory? If this position is correct, to attempt to give the truth to the Jews as a nation now is but a waste of time and to run counter to the plan of God. But, as seen above, the Lord saves people through the preaching of the gospel. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ (Romans 10:17). When the eunuch wanted the truth, God sent Phillip to preach to him (Acts 8:26-40). When Cornelius prayed for more light, the Lord had him send for Peter, who would speak to him “words” whereby he could be saved (Acts 11:12-14). The Lord has made no distinction between Jew and Gentile, “cleansing their hearts by faith” (Acts 15:8,9) which comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17).

The rendering of Zechariah 12:10 as it appears in the Common Version has contributed to the misunderstanding of the method whereby Israel will be converted. In this translation we find these words, “and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced.” But in the American Revised Version, which is far more accurate, we read “and they shall look unto me whom they have pierced.” The preposition which in the former translation is rendered “upon” and in the latter, “unto” primarily means, as defined by Brown, Driver, and Briggs in their Hebrew Lexicon, “to, towards, for.” In Isaiah 45:22 we have the same preposition rendered “unto” after the verb “look.” In this passage God calls upon those in the ends of the earth to look to Him in faith and be saved. This is the idea which Zechariah expressed in 12:10 in his speaking of the future conversion of Israel. Having heard the Word of God and having been convicted of the national sin of rejecting her Messiah she will look to Him by faith, which comes by hearing the word of Christ, and will be saved.

The proclamation to be issued by the leaders of the nation calling the people to repentence is found in Hosea 6:1-3:

Come, and let us return unto Jehovah; for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. After two days will he revive us: on the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live before him. And let us know, let us follow on to know Jehovah: his going forth is sure as the morning; and he will come unto us as the rain, as the latter rain that watereth the earth.”

In this call to national repentance and a return to God, the affirmation is made that Jehovah is the one who has torn and who will heal. The acknowledgement of their pitiable condition and the appeal for a return to God on the part of the nation in order that they might be healed show that the repentance and returning to the Lord precede their conversion. The knowledge of one’s lost and hopeless condition coupled with assurance of salvation through the Saviour is the thing which leads men back to God.

In view of the facts which have been presented and the many more that might be given, one must conclude that Israel’s conversion is contingent upon the preaching of the Word. Since Jehovah, who created the nation of Israel and called her to be the channel of world-blessing, can not take any rest until she is clothed in the righteousness of her Messiah and Lord, and since she will never turn to Him for salvation until the message of the cross is given to her, we who have the glad tidings of redeeming love and who are not giving it to her are certainly grieving His heart. May He open our eyes to see His program for the return of His ancient people and may He stir our hearts to cooperate with Him in bringing them back to Him.

When Israel does return to God, she will be as the dew of Jehovah among the nations of the earth (Micah 5:8). Then ten men out of every nation will “take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you” (Zechariah 8:23). At that time God will be glorified in Israel (Isaiah 44:23). Then will the “earth be full of the knowledge of Jehovah, as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:9). God will then for the first time be glorified in the earth (Isaiah 61:3).

Chapter Two: The Task of Giving the Truth to Israel

The task of presenting the truth to the entire nation of Israel is indeed very complicated because of the diversity of conditions under which the Jewish people live and because of the fact that their history during the last nineteen centuries has been written in blood. An analysis of the problem shows that, if one wishes to give the gospel to them, he must recognize their different classes, the many languages which they speak, the various countries in which they live, their biased opinions toward things religious because of persecutions endured by them, and their theological and philosophical outlook. Let us now study these conditions which must be met.

Class Divisions

The task of presenting the truth to the entire nation of Israel is indeed very complicated because of the diversity of conditions under which the highly educated minority, the moderately tutored middle class, and the working class live. Undoubtedly small tracts written in a very simple style and dealing only elementarily with the themes discussed meet the intellectual requirements of the illiterate person. But such a brief treatment will not convince the moderately educated masses; hence treatises dealing more adequately with the subjects under consideration must be prepared to satisfy the intellectual and spiritual demands of this class. But for the scholars and the great intellectual group that are leading the nation a literature which expounds in a scholarly and thorough manner all vital questions must be prepared in order to satisfy their reason and heart. Hitherto very few books have been written for the second and third classes.

Multiplicity of Languages Spoken

Another factor which complicates the Jewish evangelization problem is the many different languages spoken by this people. The correctness of the Word of God has been confirmed by Israel’s having been dispersed among all the nations. That she was to be thus scattered is asserted by the prophets. See such passages as Jeremiah 31:10, “Hear the word of Jehovah, 0 ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off; and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.” In every nation of any consequence Jews are to be found. This world-wide dispersion is the punishment which the Lord inflicted because of their having rejected King Messiah. But God, who always converts every bad situation into a blessing and makes it contribute to the advancement of His ultimate plans, is acclimating them to the various regional conditions throughout the world and is schooling them at the present time in the languages, customs, thought, and outlook of the different peoples in order that, when the church is removed from the earth by the Rapture before the Tribulation, the Nicodemuses, to whom we are now giving the gospel, may come out of the seclusion of their fear into the fullness of the light and liberty of the gospel, take up the banner of King Immanuel laid down by the ascended church, and begin the greatest evangelistic campaign of all the ages.

In order to get our message to the Jewish people, we must put it in the principal languages understood by them. This multiplicity of tongues involves much labor and expense. Yet it must be done if the truth is to be given to world-Jewry.

Prejudice Created by Persecutions

Another factor entering largely into our problem is what might be called its historical background. The Jews have been persecuted through the ages in the name of Christ. During the past, rivers of blood have flowed whenever pogroms broke out against the Jews. When the opposition did not assume such violent proportions, it frequently manifested itself in disfranchisement, ostracism, and various political and social handicaPsalm Furthermore, the European and Asiatic Jews have had very little opportunity of seeing the genuine type of evangelical Christianity. On the contrary, they have come in touch with only ecclesiasticism in which little of genuine Christian doctrine and spirit is discernible, the true original elements being overshadowed by ceremonialism and formalism. The resultant effect of such an unfavorable environment has been the creation of an abnormal and bitter prejudice against everything that is called Christian. The truth must be given, therefore, to the Jews in such a way as to break down this hatred and prejudice of the centuries.

Special Theological and Philosophical Outlook

Another obstacle which confronts those desiring to evangelize Israel is the great theological chasm separating the evangelical Christian from the masses of Jewry. At the present time the Hebrew is a unitarian whereas the well-taught Christian is a trinitarian.

From the Targums, the oldest translations of the Old Testament into Aramaic, and from early rabbinical writings we see that the Jews of the first and second centuries were trinitarians. Furthermore, we learn from the Midrashic literature that they were expecting Messiah to appear in the second quarter of the first century of our era. This historical fact is absolutely proved by Rabbi Abba Silver in his book, Messianic Speculations in Israel. Since they were looking eagerly for His appearance, and since they were thorough-going trinitarians, which constitutes the warp and woof of the Old Testament revelation, the gospel according to Matthew was written by the Holy Spirit to meet their spiritual need and to prove to them that Jesus was their rightful King and Saviour. A casual perusal of this record convinces one that the writer assumed on the part of his readers a belief in the Trinity and an expectation of Messiah’s appearance. Therefore the special adaptability of Matthew to the needs of the first century Jew is immediately apparent. The early Christians pressed with telling effect upon them the logic of the fulfillment of their Scriptural predictions in Jesus of Nazareth. From this angle we can see why this record made such wonderful inroads among the Hebrew people at the very beginning.

Being unable to resist the force of the argument based upon fulfilled prophecy, the leaders of Israel veered from their trinitarian position and soon became unitarians. Finally, they were also able to push off to the more distant future the expectation of Messiah’s appearance. Nevertheless from time to time as crises have arisen involving the welfare of the Jewish people, their leaders have sought comfort in the Messianic Hope and have pointed to it as the only solution of their problems.

Since the Jew doctrinally now is not where he was when Matthew was written and since a high wall of prejudice has been erected between him and the true Christian world by the persecutions and ill-treatment of the centuries, the Gospel of Matthew, therefore, does not have the appeal and force to him that it had when it was first written. In other words, the Jew is, figuratively speaking, many miles away from his doctrinal position of the first century, for the meeting of which Matthew was especially adapted. This fact has complicated Jewish evangelization very materially and rendered it most difficult. Furthermore, since the orthodox Jew has been taught and believes that the entire New Testament is a collection of forged documents written to bolster up the claims of Christianity, he either will not read it but rather will cast it aside or, if he investigates it, he does so, figuratively speaking, through colored glasses and with a strong prejudice against it as a revelation from God.

There are atheistic Jews as well as Gentiles. These, of course, are not interested in religion. But they are in the minority. We must not make the mistake of interpreting the Jew’s indifference to religion at the present time as evidence of his being inately irreligious. Such is not the case. The young American Jew cannot, as a rule, understand the ritualistic service of the Orthodox Synagogue since it is conducted in Hebrew. The same thing is true of those having connection with conservative congregations. Hence their young people naturally drift from things religious and become absorbed in worldly matters. In the reformed temples the teaching, which is in English, is all of the modernistic type and destroys faith in the revelation of God. The natural thing for the young Jew under these conditions to do is to drift from religion. These facts make it all the more imperative that we give the truth to Jewry now.

The Hebrew is innately religious as is demonstrated by his checkered history. Notwithstanding the wave of outward atheism and indifference to religion which is in evidence in many places, he at heart is a firm believer in the true God and His revelation to man. The great majority is orthodox at heart and holds more or less to the traditional views. They must be approached from that angle. A careful study of the present doctrinal position and spiritual outlook of Israel makes it abundantly clear that there are seven fundamental propositions that must be cleared up to the satisfaction of both her intellectual and spiritual natures before she can fully and intelligently accept Jesus of Nazareth as her Messiah, Saviour, and Lord. To the explanation of these fundamental issues and the antecedent conditions underlying them, let us now address our attention.

The Trinity

In the first statement of the Bible we read that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The word rendered “God” in the original language is plural but is used with a singular verb. This unusual construction hints at the plurality of the Divine Personalities of the Godhead and at the same time carefully guards their unity. Before the creation of man there was a conference held in the council chambers of eternity in which these Divine Personalities said: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness …” (Genesis 1:26). Here, again, we see a reflection of the plurality of Divine Personalities and at the same time an affirmation of their unity. The plural verb rendered let us make asserts the plurality of the Divine Being and the phrases, in our image, after our likeness, clearly declare their unity. This same doctrinal position is the gist of Israel’s confession which literally rendered is “Hear, 0 Israel: Jehovah our Gods is Jehovah a unity” (Deuteronomy 6:4). From many Old Testament passages we learn that there are three persons constituting the Divine Being. As stated above, this doctrine occupies a fundamental position in the teachings of Moses and the prophets.

Far into the second century of the Christian era the Jew still held to the Scriptural doctrine of the Trinity but later, when he was pressed by the Christians to accept Jesus of Nazareth, he discarded this ancient view and espoused the unitarian position. From then to the present time this false concept has dominated his thinking and teaching.

Since he has been taught that the New Testament is not a genuine revelation from God, it becomes necessary for us to present the Trinitarian position from the Old Testament, beginning, as both Jesus and Paul did, with Moses and the prophets and unfolding the Scriptures to him. In other words, first of all he must be shown the doctrine of the Trinity from the Old Testament.

The Messiah’s Nature and Person

The people of Israel formulate their conception of Messiah from the data found in such books as Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles concerning Saul, David, and Solomon, all of whom were called the Lord’s anointed or “messiah.” Since they believe that the Law, the five books of Moses, is perfect and needs no further divine revelation, they, especially the orthodox group, assign it a place of authority superior to that given to the rest of the Old Testament. With this peculiar slant on the Scriptures they do not attach the proper importance to the testimony of the prophets relative to the dual nature of King Messiah, i.e., that He is God who enters the world by virgin birth. To them Messiah is simply a man, born by natural generation as Israel’s illustrious kings were, who will lead the nation in the future to its former position of glory and power. Hence their conception of Messiah is that He is to be simply an ingenious man of outstanding leadership and of a great soul and dominating personality.

This misconception of Messiah, the Redeemer of Israel, necessitates on the part of the Jewish worker a detailed exposition of the leading passages in the Old Testament which show clearly both the divine and the human sides of His nature. Only after the Jew has been shown from his own Scriptures that, instead of God’s being one in the absolute sense of the term, He is a Trinity of Personalities, can one logically present the Old Testament doctrine of the two-fold nature of Israel’s future King. This teaching like all else that is to be given to the Hebrews must be presented first as it is found in the Law of Moses and later unfolded in the Prophets.

The Task to be Accomplished by Messiah

Having learned that there is a Holy Trinity and that One of them was scheduled to enter the world by virgin birth in carrying out the divine program, the Jew is in a position to be given the Old Testament picture of the entire work of Messiah which He, according to the Scriptures, accomplishes for man’s redemption. There are two lines of predictions which constantly appear in the Prophets: one speaks of His humiliation and suffering, whereas the other presents Him as a triumphant conqueror of all foes. Somehow the Jew’s attention has been directed to the latter line of thought and he has practically overlooked the former. Especially the orthodox section of the nation is looking for the triumphant Messiah to deliver it from its enemies but knows little of the suffering Messiah. In order, therefore, to present the claims of Jesus of Nazareth to this group, one must expound those passages of Scripture which give the entire redemptive career of King Messiah consisting of His two comings and of the interval separating them, during which He is seated at the right hand of God. Unless this whole outline of His earthly and heavenly ministry is presented from single passages, the Jew feels that one is garbling his Scriptures. When those predictions which deal with the first coming only are interpreted as being fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth nineteen hundred years ago and others which speak of His glorious future reign are presented as awaiting the time for Him to return in order to be fulfilled, the Jew thinks that the Christian is simply juggling facts. Such passages as Isaiah 61 and Psalm 110 unfold before us “the blue print of messianic times.” When these and others like them are thus expounded to him, he can see clearly the complete work for which Messiah comes into the world to perform.

The Time of Messiah’s Beginning His Task

The next step in the logical unfolding of the truth concerning the Hebrew Messiah is that of showing the time when He was scheduled to appear on earth in order to begin His redemptive work. There is much material in the Scriptures which bears upon this most important question. Since the heart of this phase of the investigation concerns itself with the time element of His first advent, one must deal with, not only messianic prophecy pointing to His appearance, but also with the entire chronological structure embedded in the Old Testament. There is abundant proof found in the Hebrew Scriptures which enables one to show that the time of His first coming was to be before the sceptre departed from Judah (Genesis 49:10). The collapse of the Jewish nation occurred in 70 A.D.; hence Messiah should have appeared before that calamity. The thorough treatment of this subject demands a detailed exposition of relevant Scriptures or the issuing of a large volume. Such unabridged books should be designed for the intellectual leaders of the nation whereas abridged and simplified works should be prepared for the average Jewish person. Of course, brief explanations should be given to or small tracts written for the man with limited education.

Did Messiah Appear on Scheduled Time?

When the doctrines of the Trinity, of Messiah’s dual nature, of His entire redemptive work, and of the time for His first appearance have been thoroughly and logically presented to the intelligent Hebrew, he naturally asks if He really came at the time foretold. At this point of unfolding God’s truth to the Jew, the Christian should leave the Old Testament field and present the claims of Jesus of Nazareth as they appear in the four records of the gospel. At this stage of instruction or special study the Jew can appreciate fully the testimony of the evangelists.

Some explanation concerning their testimony should be given in order that he might intelligently approach them. In giving this advice I, a Gentile, am speaking from personal experience. I well recall my purchase of a New Testament when I was in my teens. Matthew I read with unusual interest. The further I went into the story the more interesting it became. Having finished it, I began studying Mark. Not knowing the relations existing between the different records, I was much perplexed by reading so many things here which had already been told by Matthew. But having no one to explain the facts, I became more puzzled as I continued my reading in the third and fourth records of the gospel. Nevertheless I went forward in my study until I finished the book of Revelation.

When I began rereading the New Testament, having no books nor anyone to explain the situation to me, I experienced great difficulties. Remembering my perplexities due to a lack of simple instruction, I feel that as an introduction to the New Testament gospel testimony a book should be given the Jew, which will remove the difficulties just mentioned and which will lead to an intelligent appreciation of the gospel records. It is my conviction that, whenever God’s Word is presented in an intelligible manner to the honest heart, the Holy Spirit will carry conviction. Hence the necessity of such an explanation is apparent.

When will Messiah Appear to Complete His Redemptive Work?

Though the average Jew does not study the Old Testament, especially the prophetic portions, with the close scrutiny of a Christian scholar, he does see in the messages of the prophets the general trend of events with which the age ends. It is evident that a thorough, scholarly, and sympathetic exposition of the Word describing the closing scenes of this age should be presented to him, first from the Old Testament point of view and then from that of the New. The logic of fulfilled predictions is most cogent and powerful. The prophetic Word is especially a lamp to one’s feet in these days. Since it is being fulfilled, one may understand what to expect in the future. Therefore it becomes necessary to show from different sections of the Word that the time for Messiah to return and complete the work begun at His first advent is close at hand.

Israel’s Repudiation of Her National Sin

Having laid before the intelligent Jew the entire redemptive work of his Messiah and also the tragic history and suffering of His own people, the result of Israel’s rejection of her Messiah, one must bring conviction by the Spirit of God to his heart in order to make him realize the enormity of the national sin and the necessity of Israel’s repenting of and repudiating it. The message of the Apostles was repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 20:18-21).

A thorough, intelligible, and sympathetic exposition of the seven points discussed in this section presents the claims of Jesus as the Hebrew Messiah and Saviour and rests the case with the Holy Spirit, who alone convicts men of sin, righteousness, and judgment. If the Jew to whom Jesus is thus presented is honest and is seeking the truth, the Holy Spirit in every such case will convict and lead him to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Trained Workers Needed for the Harvest of Israel

A thorough understanding of the problem of Jewish evangelization, as has just been outlined, carries the conviction that special and intensive training is necessary to equip one for efficient service among God’s ancient people. Of course, one may accomplish a great deal of good for the Lord, though he does not have the proper preparation; but with sufficient mastery of the problems involved one can render a far greater service. With a sickle one may cut grain but with a self binder or header he can perform the work much more efficiently and far more quickly.

Our present civilization is indeed complExodus One must be abreast of the times and understand those to whom he wishes to render service. Otherwise, he will expend much time and energy accomplishing little. Especially is this true in the Jewish mission field.

One owes it to His Lord to acquire the greatest proficiency in his chosen field of labor possible. The Jews are a very brilliant people and, as a rule, are educated and abreast of the times. They are quick to detect the lack of training and efficiency in the one who approaches them with the gospel message. They worship, as some one has said, at the shrine of scholarship. This fact demands the highest degree of proficiency possible for successful Jewish work. In this connection let me throw out a warning: an education and training apart from devotion to the Master and a dependence upon Him are a positive detriment; in fact, in many cases they prove a curse to those who are following the Lord afar off.

My advice to any one who contemplates entering the Jewish mission field is to make thorough preparation before attempting to do full time service. Such training will pay large dividends in the form of souls led to the Lord.

Chapter Three: The Program of the Biblical Research Society

In the preceding section we have seen, within the compass of a few words, the complicated situation which confronts those who wish to proclaim the gospel to Israel. No harder task can possibly lie before one than that of giving God’s Word in its purity to this great nation from which will come the future world-revivalists. When one realizes the responsibility of evangelizing the Jew imposed upon all true believers by the Lord whose heart yearns over Jerusalem and His chosen people (Isaiah 62:1-12) he begins to ask how may the gospel message be given to them, what methods should be employed, and what He wants him personally to do. The Lord always employs men and means in accomplishing His work as is seen by close study of His dealings with mankind. At the present time there are various and sundry methods employed — some more efficient and economical than others. In determining, however, what course should be pursued each must be guided by the Lord, common sense and intelligence. It is essential that one have the leading of the Lord in everything which he does, in order for his efforts to be blessed and owned of Him. At the same time He gives us common intelligence and expects us to use it, not only in our temporal affairs, but also in carrying on His work.

The Biblical Research Society employs various means which to it appear most practical and efficient. As time goes on, however, and as the Lord leads, we who are directing it will adopt any methods not now employed which promise to advance His cause more rapidly and successfully. At the present, however, there are seven departments of its work.

The Literary Method

Since we are approaching very closely to the end of the age, since the Jews are scattered throughout the world, dwelling in many small centers as well as in the densely-populated cities, and since it is impossible to maintain a regularly organized Jewish work in all places, the Biblical Research Society was led to adopt the literary method as the chief means of its endeavors. Another reason for the employment of this means is that in large cities where the Jewish people are, figuratively speaking, barricaded behind walls of the modern apartments and hotels to which the missionary has absolutely no access, no other way of approach is possible except that of the radio. All other avenues of reaching the great masses of Israel here are absolutely blocked.

The power and efficiency of literature has been demonstrated beyond a doubt by past experience. Beginning with a perusal of the great apologies of the second and third centuries of the Christian era and continuing to the present time the study of the use of literature as a means of spreading doctrines, both true and false, we see that all national and world movements have with success employed the printed page. Especially is this true with regard to the cults and political organizations in their spreading propaganda.

The Roman Catholic Church recognizes the printed page as one of the most potent instruments at its disposal in spreading its teachings. On the walls of the Catholic Press Exposition held in Rome 1936 and ’37 appeared the following quotation which I copied. “However one strives towards the triumph of the Catholic cause, this will never be achieved if the press, which is the principal means, is forgotten. The Catholic who does not protect, hold, defend, and make known the Catholic press may be pious but he does not take into account the times in which he lives nor has he yet reached the stage to see clearly the present hour. A journalist has a public highly-civil ministry, which may rise to the loftiness of the priesthood.”

Without doubt, Rome, which is one of the mightiest powers on earth today, has discovered the possibilities of the printed page. Others who wish to make their teachings known also have made use of the press and literature.

According to reports, the Christian Scientists are presenting their literature bound in the most attractive way to the educated Jews, who are in large numbers embracing their doctrines. Since this method is a legitimate one, why should we, the children of light, not employ it to disseminate the facts concerning our glorious Saviour and soon-coming King? Let us, therefore, be wise and quick to seize this most potent weapon in our fight against sin and the powers of evil.

Literature for the Three Classes of Jewry

Jewry is, as already observed, divided into three sections: the laboring class, the enlightened masses, and the highly educated leadership. For the untutored the Society has published small tracts (two to ten or more pages) according to the subject discussed. These leaflets are distributed very widely as time and opportunity afford.

For the great middle class abridged editions of the books published are freely distributed by means of the mails and in many instances by personal contacts. These booklets deal adequately with the themes treated and meet the intellectual and spiritual demands of those for whom they are written.

For the highly educated leadership of Israel seven large volumes are being prepared, known as The Messianic Series. Three of these have been completed and distributed by the tens of thousands as the Lord has enabled. Eventually the first one, The God of Israel, will be revised and enlarged to solve more thoroughly the major difficult problems there discussed and to satisfy the hearts and heads of Israel’s leaders. The second book entitled, Messiah: His Nature and Person, deals adequately with the incarnation and virgin birth of the Hebrew Messiah. This volume, containing 224 pages, thoroughly presents the Scriptural teaching in regard to the divine nature of Messiah and His redemption. The third book has 128 pages and is entitled, Messiah: His Redemptive Career. Eventually, in future editions another chapter will be added in order to give additional proof of the correctness of the Christian position to the rabbis and Jewish scholars. The fourth of the series, entitled Messiah: His First Coming Scheduled, is now in preparation and will shortly appear, if God will. It will contain in the unabridged form around four hundred pages. It deals with the chronological question, which has been a vital issue with the Jew through the centuries. Since Israel in every crisis seeks comfort in the Messianic Hope, she will again at the time of the Tribulation turn to this source for encouragement and assistance. She will also use the same false and misleading principles of interpretation which she has employed in the past and will be unable to see the truth and the facts relative to Messiah and her relationship to Him unless the truth concerning Him is given her. In view of the impending Tribulation it is imperative that the chronological question, treated scientifically and scholarly, be presented to her so that she will not be led into error again. The next step in the unfolding of the messianic question to the Jew is the presentation of the historical facts concerning Jesus of Nazareth. This volume is to be Messiah: His Historical Appearance. After a resume of the Old Testament teaching concerning Messiah’s redemptive work has been given, the gospel records will be presented in the form of a harmony so that the Jewish leaders may, for the first time in the history of the race, have the facts before their eyes at one time. All of the vital questions concerning the difficulties connected with the gospel records will be dealt with adequately. Then will be presented the Acts of the Apostles, and the historical objections brought against it by the unbelieving critics will be answered. Furthermore, the testimony of the New Testament in general will be shown to be genuine and authentic. The sixth volume of the series will deal with the signs of the times, proving that the year of Israel’s redemption is at hand. The last of the set will explain the necessity of her repudiation of the national sin in order that her sufferings may cease.

Jews Patronizing Libraries

Since the Jews are patronizing the libraries of the world and are reading the literature on their shelves, it is most important that volumes of the highest type be placed there for them. This fact was borne in upon my heart when I was doing special research work in the libraries of Europe. I am safe in saying that at least ninety per cent of the volumes written within the last twenty-five years by university men are modernistic. Much of the other ten per cent is colored more or less with doctrines with which the thorough-going, conservative pre-millenialist can not agree. The person who is not grounded in the truth or who is seeking for it, humanly speaking, stands little show of finding it when he goes to these great libraries. Such a one is overwhelmed by the great array of scholarship on the liberal side. He naturally concludes that the modernistic position is correct. Hence comprehensive, scholarly works, true to the fundamentals of the faith, should be in these libraries in order that the Jews seeking the truth might have an opportunity to learn it. This fact also applies to the Gentiles.

When Distribute the New Testament?

According to the original plan of the Society, when the books of the Messianic Series dealing with the four fundamental errors of Judaism have been given to a Jew, it will place the New Testament in his hands. “But why not give it to him before you have given the literature?” one may ask. “In fact, why go to the expense and time of distributing the books? Why not give the New Testament at the beginning?” These questions are to the point and most vital. There are reasons most cogent and powerful for not doing it. In the first place, the Jew has been taught that the New Testament is a collection of forged documents written to bolster up the claims of Christianity. He honestly believes this false report. His prejudice prevents his reading it with an open mind. Hence it will do him little good so long as he holds this attitude.

There is a deep underlying principle which causes him to take this position. The fundamental tenet of Judaism is that there is one God, that is, one in the absolute sense. This teaching is based, as shown elsewhere in this book, upon a misunderstanding of Deuteronomy 6:4 which literally and accurately rendered is “Hear, 0 Israel, Jehovah our Gods is Jehovah a unity!” The Jew misunderstands this passage and affirms that God is one in the literal and absolute sense of the term. This one thought is the warp and woof of his religious, mental, and philosophical outlook. He is taught this doctrine from the cradle. Furthermore, he is told that the Christians and the New Testament affirm that there are three gods. This statement is false because neither the New Testament nor they hold this position. When the Jew reads it, he has in his mind that there is but one God whereas he believes that it teaches three gods. He may like its ethics and morals but he says that it cannot be God’s Word since it teaches the doctrine of the Trinity. This is the stumbling block for him whenever he reads it. Hence he is convinced that it is false.

I might illustrate the Jew’s attitude toward it by a parallel case. The well-informed Christian believes that the Koran (the Mohammedan Bible) is not a revelation from God. Of this fact, he is thoroughly convinced. His position relative to the Koran is correct. If a Moslem missionary should place a copy of it in his hands, He would not accept its teaching. Hence the money and effort put forth in giving it to him would be lost. The same is largely true of the Jew since he feels that the New Testament is not the Word of God. Of course, he is mistaken on this point. Nevertheless, since he thinks that it is not from God, it is, as a rule, a waste of time and money to place it in his hands — that is, so long as he feels thus about it. He must first be convinced that it is the Word of God.

In the second place, he must be shown from his own Scriptures the New Testament background lying embedded in the Old. After this is done, and only then, is it practical and effective to place the New Testament in his hands.

Paul’s Method of Presenting Christ to Jews

This principle might be illustrated by the example of the Apostle Paul. His approach to the Jew was always different from that to the Gentile. For instance, see Acts 17:1-3:

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: and Paul, as his custom was, went in unto them, and for three sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures, opening and alleging that it behooved the Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom, said he, I proclaim unto you, is the Christ.”

The Hebrews at that time believed in the Trinity and were looking for a superhuman Messiah as is evident from a study of such Jewish writings as the book of Enoch. Furthermore, since he was living at the time of Christ’s first coming it was not necessary for him to show the “Outline of Messiah’s Redemptive Career.” Nor did he have to convince them that the time had arrived for Messiah to come, for, according to Rabbi Abba Silver in Messianic Speculations in Israel, they were expecting Him to appear in the second quarter of the first century. Therefore it was not necessary for the Apostle to set forth the truth on any of these four fundamentals of Old Testament teaching. All he had to do was to prove that “it behooved the Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom, said he, I proclaim unto you, is the Christ.”

The one important point on which they were in error was that of the death and resurrection of Messiah; hence Paul labored for three Sabbaths to prove his position from the Old Testament. Having shown the truth on this point, he only had to convince them that the Jesus whom he proclaimed was the one of whom Moses and the prophets spoke. Speaking most respectfully, I would say that presenting Christ to the Jew in Paul’s day was not so difficult as it is today.

As has been shown, the Jews have veered far away from the position which they held in New Testament times. Since then they have become unitarians; they have largely given up the Scriptural teaching relative to Messiah’s divine nature; they are looking for one coming only, knowing nothing of the two appearances separated by the Christian Dispensation; and are in error as to the time of His first advent. Hence the truth on all of these points must be presented to him from the Old Testament before he can look with an unbiased mind at the New Testament. Figuratively speaking, we have to remove from his eyes the colored glasses of error through which he would read it if it were given him. By presenting the truth to him on the four fundamentals mentioned above, one places before his eyes glasses with the crystal lenses of Old Testament prophecy which focus his attention on our blessed Lord if he has an honest heart. With these glasses he can clearly see Jesus as His Lord, Saviour, and Messiah.

These two most logical and cogent facts, which have been demonstrated by practical experience in Jewish work, are our reasons for presenting to the Jew the Old Testament teaching on the four fundamentals before placing in his hands the New. Of course, I am speaking of a promiscuous distribution of the New Testament among the Hebrews irrespective of whether or not they have had sufficient contact with Christianity and its real teachings so as to enable them to understand it when they read it.

God’s Word shall not return unto Him void but it shall accomplish that whereunto He has sent it (Isaiah 55:10,11). His Word is like the fire and the hammer which breaks the rock into pieces (Jeremiah 23:29). Hence the New Testament preceded by the books preparing the heart and mind for its glorious message will have a most wonderful effect upon the nation of Israel. May the Lord speed up this gospel testimony.

In view of the facts that we are, according to the signs of the times, in the very closing scenes of the age of grace, that the Jewish field has, practically speaking, hardly been touched, and that what is to be done must be accomplished with all dispatch, one cannot avoid the conclusion that the literary method of evangelizing Israel is the only means whereby this herculean task can be performed in the brief time yet remaining and under the stress of present-day conditions.

Personal Work

In this connection it is not amiss to call attention to the fact that as we have opportunity we do personal work, which supplements our literary activity. For instance, only recently I went into a Jewish home with the stereopticon and slides and gave a message to a number of leading Jewish business men of the locality. As a result of this meeting I was asked to speak to the Rotary club. I was also requested to speak to the ladies chapter of B’nai B’rith.

Just a few days ago some of the leading Jews in a city where I was lecturing invited me to speak to a group of thirty of them in a wealthy home.

A Jew with whom I was recently talking in the bank asked for my books, stating he would be thrilled to read every word I wrote. From time to time I call on Jews both in their homes and at their places of business. I could greatly multiply the experiences of our personal ministry if space permitted. One who loves the Lord must avail himself of every opportunity of sounding forth the message of redeeming love.

Local Branches and Cooperating Missions

During the eight years of its existence the Society has established something like one hundred and twenty branches of volunteer workers who collect the names of Jews in their localities and send its books in serial order to them. In addition to the use of the literature many of the local branches are making special efforts to reach the Jews locally in a personal manner by breaking down anti-Semitism and by showing every kindness to them and at the same time giving them the gospel. This phase of work has been greatly blessed of the Lord. We encourage all to continue this type of ministry. The gospel message has been given literally to hundreds of thousands of Jews living in small places who otherwise would not have had an opportunity of hearing the message of life.

There are something like twenty-odd missions and many missionaries in various parts of the world who have been and are cooperating with the Society in its efforts to sow the seed in all Israel in this generation.

Radio Ministry

It was shown in a preceding paragraph that the literary method and the radio ministry are the only two means whereby the message can be carried into the homes of the great masses of Jews in large cities. The Biblical Research Society, realizing these facts, is supplementing its literary program with that of electrical transcriptions as the Lord opens the way. Whenever opportunity affords, its field men, likewise, give personal messages over the radio. These, of course, are intended primarily for Jewish hearers. In this initial stage of the radio ministry the Society has the seven-point message of its program on that many records. These messages go out over the air frequently from various stations throughout the country. The objective toward which we are at present working is to make an announcement, in every community where the records are to be run, by mail to the Jews, stating the station, date, and time. Furthermore, this postal announcement will urge them to tune in and listen to the author of the books, complimentary copies of which they have already received, because he will have a vital and heart-stirring message for them. Such an advance notice prior to the running of the records will instantly arouse the Jews‘ interest in the themes discussed and will cause them to listen in and to re-read the books with greater interest than ever before.

As the Lord leads and blesses, it is our fervent hope that we may enlarge this radio ministry and keep it constantly before the minds of Jewry throughout the country. Eternity alone will reveal the results flowing from the distribution of the literature and the proclamation of the Word over the air in our effort to reach the great majority of Jews who by no other method could possibly be touched.

In this phase of the work a special effort is made to reach both Jew and Gentile; hence the messages, true to the Scriptures, are adapted to each group without giving any unnecessary offense. An appeal is made to the lost pointing them to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. At the same time information relative to the Society’s world-wide program is given to acquaint Christians with the necessity of their cooperating in the great task of Jewish evangelization.

It is the earnest request of the Board members that every one pray especially that God may use this radio ministry for His glory and honor and for the salvation of many souls.

Training Institute

From the inception of the work the Society has realized that ultimately it must have a Biblical Institute to train workers who are eager to fit into this attempt of world-wide seed-sowing. Having a firm conviction that the efficiency of the program thus far outlined would depend, to a certain extent, upon trained workers, the Society has looked forward to the establishment of some sort of school or institute in which those whose hearts God has touched to minister to His ancient people might have an opportunity to train for this special ministry. In pursuance of this plan it held a three weeks‘ Institute in Washington, D. C. (October, 1937) as its initial effort along this line. We are most highly gratified with the possibilities this department promises. It is our present plan to conduct this type of training and finally develop a school which will thoroughly equip the student who wishes to engage in the type of evangelism conducted by the Society.

We believe strongly in what is usually called hand-picked fruit. Hence, the Society wishes to train God-called people in order that they may approach the Jew in an intelligent way and present the claims of the gospel in the most efficient manner. Thus personal work will be emphasized, and how to deal with typical cases similar to those which the missionary will meet in his work will be constantly held before the student.

Preparation for doing Gentile work does not equip one to bring in an efficient manner the gospel to the Jew. An engineering course does not prepare one to be an accountant or a surgeon. Each vocation demands special training for effective service in a given field. It is a mistake, therefore, for one to think that he who has prepared himself for one special type of activity can turn definitely into the Jewish field and preach Christ efficiently to the Chosen People. Jesus called fishermen and others to carry on His work after His death. But before entrusting them with the weighty responsibility of full-time Christian service, He trained them for three and one-half years. Even then He commanded them to wait for the coming of the Spirit to guide them in their ministry. We may be sure that the Lord wants trained-workers. Preparation comes before service. But training is not sufficient. The aid and assistance of the Holy Spirit is necessary. Hence the Apostles were commanded to await the coming of the Spirit to guide them into the truth. The assistance which the Spirit rendered was guarding them against error, bringing to their remembrance the things which Jesus had taught them, and revealing truths in addition to what they already knew — in other words, the revelation found in the New Testament. Since we have the completed revelation, the Spirit does not render this service to us. But He does assist in the first two things.

In calling Saul of Tarsus into the ministry the Lord chose one whose training had been completed. On his second missionary tour Paul selected a highly trained man to accompany them, namely, Luke the Physician. At the same time the Apostle had Timothy in the group in order to train him. These and many other facts prove that the workers of the New Testament period who accomplished much in the Master’s cause were trained for their task. The more highly trained they were the more efficient were the services accomplished.

One must be prepared to avail himself of every opportunity afforded him. One of the most efficient means of preaching Christ to the Jew is by means of stereopticon lectures in the home. The Jew has rightly condemned many Christian efforts to present the claims of Jesus to his people, stating that questionable means have been adopted in the work of proselyting, as he terms the preaching of the gospel. By the Jews the Christian’s attention has been called to the Golden Rule, and missionaries have been urged to practice the Master’s command with reference to the Hebrew people. One can preach the gospel to Israel by means of lantern and slides in homes in a most efficient way and at the same time practice the Golden Rule. Having the right type of slides of Biblical pictures and of Palestine, both ancient and modern, together with Scriptural texts, he can go by invitation into a Jewish home and take the message to the entire family with friends, relatives, and neighbors present. In this way all concerned will have an equal chance of seeing the truth. This type of ministry is most efficient and at the same time is in perfect harmony with the Golden Rule. Its fairness is immediately apparent to the Jew who appreciates frankness and merit.

In view of the potentialities of the stereopticon lectures the school will lay special stress on this type of ministry. At the same time it will prepare the worker for every phase of service.

The curriculum will prepare the worker in handling his Bible so that he can with ease and poise present the claims of the Messiah to the Jew. It will acquaint him with other subjects which are vital to efficient service. Every phase of ministry will be held in view. Efficiency for Christ is to be the password. Hence as the Lord leads and blesses us, this type of service will be developed.

Palestinian Biblical Institute

Knowing the great and unparalleled advantage of studying the Scriptures in the Holy Land, the Society plans to conduct a twelve weeks school in Palestine from time to time, if the Lord tarry, nothing hindering. This school will be held in Jerusalem. It will have two semesters of six weeks each. The first week of each term will be devoted to touring the country in order to acquaint the students with the topography and the geography of the land, both ancient and modern. The rest of the time will be given to intensive study of the Word. Three classes of one and one-half hours each will be conducted daily. The subject for the first one in the morning is that of the historical portions of the Old Testament, beginning with Genesis, with special attention to the chronological data around which all the history is woven. In the second the prophetic books of the Old Testament will be studied, especially Isaiah, Daniel, and Zechariah. The third class will devote its time to the gospel records and their relation to the rest of the New Testament.

Full college and seminary credit will be given by certain fundamental institutions for the work done, hour for hour. From the twelve weeks‘ study in the land out of which the Bible largely sprang, one will gain a mastery of its message such as he could not procure elsewhere.

Any congregation will do well to send its minister to take this course. It will reap the benefits in the form of an enriched ministry of the Word, as the Bible will become a new book to him and at the same time more precious than ever before. Hundreds of passages will take on new meaning to him and he will be able to pass on these good things in his expositions of the Word. Why not have your congregation, dear Christian friend, to send the pastor for its own enrichment spiritually? It will reap large dividends if he is the type of man who is seeking a clearer understanding of the Word in order to proclaim it fearlessly.

No one being open to conviction and seeking the truth can go to Palestine and study the Scriptures in the light of the land without receiving the profound impression that the Bible is indeed the very Word of the Living God. The courses offered are designed to bring out every detail which will confirm one’s faith in the Word. Of course, nothing will be warped or distorted in order to tell a story different from the facts. The truth needs no such confirmation. Any Christian worker will enrich his life by taking such courses.

This school will be for ministers and Christian workers. The party will travel third-class and will reduce the cost to the minimum. In these, both prophetic and evangelistic messages are given. As occasion permits, expositions of the Word are delivered. This phase of the work has been greatly used and blessed of the Lord to the saving of many souls and the building up of the saints.

Our annual conference is held at Montrose, Pennsylvania. Under the special blessing of God the interest has grown from year to year. The 1937 meetings were the best that we have thus far had. The interest and attendance surpassed all previous gatherings. The annual conference is held the middle of August each year. Nationally known speakers appear on the program.

Every phase of Christian truth is taught by the different speakers. Some bring devotional messages whereas others deliver expositions. Prophetic and evangelistic sermons are likewise preached. Souls are saved and saints are edified.

Biblical Research Monthly

In order to acquaint the public with its work and to proclaim the principles for which it stands, the Society publishes a paper called Biblical Research Monthly (now enlarged). Much valuable information and Scripture expositions are to be found in its columns. The subscription price is $1.00 per year. Canada and Foreign $1.10. Single copy 10c.

Literature for Christians

WHILE its chief efforts are to present the truth to Israel, the Society feels led of the Lord to publish such literature as it deems necessary to acquaint the Gentile Christians with the Scriptural teaching concerning “Israel’s Place in the Plan of God.” This is done principally by the Jewish Evangelization Series.

The Scriptural Method of Procedure

But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

According to the instructions of our risen Lord, the disciples were to preach the gospel in Jerusalem — the place where they were — and next to proclaim it through Judaea. With this work accomplished, He commanded them to move up into Samaria, because that was the next logical step in the development of their world-program. From there they were to go forth to the uttermost parts of the earth. From these simple instructions we can see the order of procedure for today. Our home community, in the language of this passage, is our Jerusalem, where we are to begin work for the Master either among Jews or Gentiles. Having completed the task honestly and thoroughly, we are next to reach out into the territories adjacent and work them as thoroughly as possible. Like waves caused by some disturbance on the water which move into larger circles, so our efforts should continue extending to the regions beyond until this message of life has been given to all Israel throughout the world.

In order to make clear what I mean, let me illustrate it this way. Los Angeles, my home town, is my Jerusalem. My first responsibility is to the Jews with whom I live. Having done what I can for them, I am next to reach out to those in surrounding districts in the effort to get the gospel to them. Then I am to continue enlarging the circle of my labors along this line until the truth has been proclaimed to the Jews in the remotest corners of the earth. To make another application of this principle, we will say that there is some Christian living in a small town in which there are a few Jewish families. His first responsibility is to give the gospel to his nearest neighbors, then to do what he can in an effort to reach the Jews of his county, next his state, and finally to send it to the Jews in the uttermost parts of the earth. The literary method and the radio ministry together with the other means employed by the Biblical Research Society enable the Christian, no matter where he lives or what his station in life is, to follow out the Lord’s program as outlined by Him in His farewell message.

Sowing The Seed Broadcast

In our Lord’s parable of the sower He stated that “the sower” cast the seed upon the wayside, the rocky land, among thorns, and in the good soil. But the fourth type of ground does not have the same fertility and productivity, for some of it yields thirty, some sixty, and some a hundredfold. From this teaching we see that the gospel is to be given, even to those who have no appreciation of it. This fact is set forth by the command to sow the seed on the wayside, which will be devoured by the birds. The Word falling on the stony ground does not produce fruit unto eternal life; neither does that lodging among the thorns. Nevertheless, one is to give the truth to all alike and leave the results with God. It is as necessary to preach the gospel to the atheist and unbeliever as it is to present it to those who have honest hearts, for it is a savor of life unto life and of death unto death (cf. II Corinthians 2:15,16).

Much of the preaching in our churches falls on hearts represented by the wayside soil; nevertheless, we rightly continue to have it proclaimed from the pulpits. In fact, much of the Christian work so far as eternal, blessed results are concerned seems to be fruitless; regardless of this fact, we continue to engage in it. Much of the gospel preaching over the radio as far as visible, tangible results show is fruitless; however, we continue this ministry. Doubtless some of the books and tracts sent forth to the Jews are not read; despite this, we continue faithfully in doing this work of sowing the seed on the wayside, upon the rocks, and among the thorns, for we know that His Word shall not return unto Him void (Isaiah 55:10,11).

In commanding to sow the seed on the soil in which it cannot possibly grow, the Lord is simply giving us a charge similar to the one laid upon Isaiah:

And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed.” (Isaiah 6:9,10)

In like manner He commissioned Ezekiel to proclaim His message to Israel. At the same time He informed the prophet that the preaching would not be heeded:

And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them. For thou art not sent to a people of a strange speech and of a hard language, but to the house of Israel; not to many peoples of a strange speech and of a hard language, whose words thou canst not understand. Surely, if I sent thee to them, they would hearken unto thee. But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me: for all the house of Israel are of a hard forehead and of a stiff heart.” (Ezekiel 3:4-7)

We may not understand fully why it is necessary to proclaim the truth to those who will not hear, but such is our Lord’s command. Again, we see a somewhat similar situation in the instructions which God gave to Jeremiah:

Thus saith Jehovah: Stand in the court of Jehovah’s house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in Jehovah’s house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word. It may be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way; that I may repent me of the evil which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings.” (Jeremiah 26:2,3)

In view of the fact that God always required the preaching to be done regardless of whether or not the people received the message, we, though we desire to see immediate results in men’s turning to God, must in obedience to the divine injunction press forward in this ministry to the house of Israel.

During the eight years of the Society’s existence it has, in answer to believing prayer, published over 1,635,000 pieces of literature. This consists of books containing 362, 224, 128, and 48 pages, together with tracts and pamphlets, some of which are in eight different languages. Most of this vast amount of publications is for Jews and has already been sent out or is constantly flowing forth to world-Jewry.

We praise the Lord for permitting us to send forth this mighty volume of testimony and ask the reader to pray constantly that the Lord will use it in the salvation of many souls.

The Results

Seeing results from our labors is always encouraging. On the contrary, when one encounters opposition and there is little evidence of his accomplishing anything, he becomes disheartened. Naturally, therefore, one eagerly looks for fruit from his labors. All too frequently we are short-sighted and look for fruit too soon. It seems that the Christian world is plagued with the spirit which in the commercial world is called the get-rich-quick idea. On the other hand, we have a right to expect reasonable returns from our labors in the Lord’s cause. Frequently I am asked by sincere, honest people to tell what results have come from our labors in the Jewish field. In answer to this question I call attention to some conversions now and the future world revival which will result from this great seed-sowing in Israel. Let us therefore thank God for the fruit we see at present and expect in the days to come.

At the Present Time: Trophies of Grace

Because of the nature of our work and the reticence of the Jew to let anyone know of his interest in Christian truth, it is most difficult for us to ascertain what are the real results of this type of work. Frequently here and there we learn of marvelous interest manifested by some who have received the literature. Every month we get letters from different parts of the world giving us information as to the reception accorded the literature, and now and then the good news that one of the Hebrew people has seen the truth and has taken his stand for the Lord. When everything is taken into consideration, we feel very greatly encouraged even from the standpoint of present results; and, when we compare the fruit of our efforts with those who are pursuing the same task but using different methods, we are greatly enheartened to push the work with all our might. It is, of course, a great delight to our hearts to hear of every Hebrew who learns of the Messiah through our efforts and who comes out definitely and takes his stand for Christ.

According to my information, a sufficient number of people have been interviewed or surveys have been made by the radio companies to justify them in claiming so many listeners. The data gathered reveals the fact that only one person out of several hundred ever writes to the station. According to this ascertained law of averages, they can quite accurately state that they have so many people who tune in to the programs. If we adopt a similar method of estimating the number of readers of the B.R.S. literature, we are emboldened to say that there are literally tens of thousands of Jews who are studying the messages. I see no reason for our not being able to make such an estimate based upon letters which we receive from Jews directly and from friends who have come personally in contact with them and who report to us that they are reading the literature. Many times I incidentally meet a Jew who informs me that he has received the books and has read them.

To date we have distributed three of the seven volumes which are expositions of the first three topics of our messianic program. The material found in these books is taken from the Old Testament Scriptures. The fourth volume likewise, from the nature of the case, is an exposition of those Scriptures which relate to the first appearance of King Messiah. Hence, the first four of the seven treatises expound the Old Testament Scriptures and prepare the way for the teaching of the fifth which shows that these predictions were fulfilled in the coming of Jesus of Nazareth and His sacrificial and atoning death upon the cross. Shortly the fourth volume will be released from the press. Since our testimony which has gone out thus far has been expounding the Old Testament prophecies and since the volume dealing with the life of Jesus has not yet appeared, it is illogical and unreasonable to expect a great ingathering of souls in the form of Hebrew converts. Notwithstanding the fact that our message has been solely from the Old Testament, the Lord has used it to date in bringing a number of souls to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and in preparing the minds and hearts of myriads of Jews who have received the literature for the testimony concerning Christ which will appear in the later volumes when published. Another great accomplishment that has been brought about by the seed-sowing thus far is the breaking down of prejudice against the truth and allaying to a certain degree the vicious spirit of anti-Semitism. Since there is such a bitter hatred against the Jewish people, one renders a genuine service to Christ if he only combats anti-Semitism and thus gains for the gospel message a favorable hearing on the part of Israel.

Someone may conclude that since we have been eight years in producing the first four volumes, the Jews will have to wait a very long time for the last three of the series. This will not be true, because 360 pages have been written on the fifth of the series and much of the research work has already been done. During the Society’s existence I have had to travel from coast to coast, speaking from eight to nine months each year. Furthermore, my time has been consumed with the personal direction of the work and its many details in its beginning. Since, however, the great burden of starting a new organization and making it known is behind us, I wish to assure all interested friends that we may look forward to a speedy completion of the remaining books within a reasonable time.

Volumes four and five have been most technical and have required much more research work and hard labor than any of the others. As I worked on the fourth book of the Messianic Series while abroad, I found much material which logically must appear in volume five, Messiah: His Historical Appearance. My research work in the libraries of Europe and travels throughout Palestine threw a great flood of light upon the various themes pertaining to Messiah. It will be much easier, therefore, to finish the fifth book. Nevertheless, it will be necessary for me to complete the research work in Palestine and in the European libraries in order to make it what it should be. The last two books of the set can be produced very easily and quickly. Therefore, we face the future with great expectation and hope. With confidence we continue the testimony to God’s beloved people.

When we see that this limited and incomplete testimony has produced some fruit, we are encouraged most heartily to believe that when the full message goes forth in the form of the succeeding volumes, God will honor His Word and there will be a great ingathering of souls, since it shall not return unto Him void. Therefore, I ask on the part of the readers a careful consideration of the herculean task to which God has called us in the preparation of this full testimony and its going forth to the entire nation of Israel as God leads. (We are only one of many agencies which God has called into existence for the purpose of giving His truth to the chosen race. It is our desire to do what we can and to cooperate with all others in this great God-given, task.)

When the farmer plants his corn and sows his wheat and other crops, he does not expect to reap his harvest the next day or the following week. He knows that he must cultivate them and await the time of ingathering. The same principle, likewise, obtains in this great spiritual world-wide seed-sowing and the harvest to result therefrom.

The Lord willing, we are planning for a great campaign of tract distribution and personal work in a most densely settled Jewish section working in conjunction with the resident missionaries. By His grace we hope to put out hundreds of thousands of the tracts, which constitute our Junior Messianic Series. I know the readers will constantly bring this matter before the Lord in earnest prayer.

The Biblical Research Society has over 120 branch groups in the United States and Canada which are reaching the Jews with our books in over 1000 cities. He began to read them at once, reading day and night, until he had read them several times. His wife said that he kept them by his bedside to read upon awakening during the night. He purchased a Bible containing the New Testament and read it through many times, often taking his two little girls out on the lawn and reading to them the story of the Messiah.

Later this man said that he greatly feared that the Jewish people had turned down the Messiah. His wife told me later that the books converted him.

Other Jewish men with whom this musician associated began to spend their evenings with him to read and discuss the New Testament. Not one of these men was arrogant and satirical in attitude toward the New Testament. Their combined judgment was that the Jewish people had in all probability turned down the real Messiah, that the kingdom Christ had come to establish may have been spiritual instead of temporal as the Jews had anticipated. They were troubled about the idea of the Trinity but the books you wrote cleared the matter away and this group of men were converted to the belief that Jesus Christ is the promised Jewish Messiah. This musician’s wife was a converted Jewess, but she said that she had never discussed religion with her husband — never at any time. She told me that your books had converted these men.

I was in the habit of taking my Bible and The Eternal God Revealing Himself to Westlake Park on Sundays to read between morning and evening services. I noted that anywhere one goes with a Bible he will be spotted by the Jews. Many of them would come and sit by me, and I had some of the most interesting conversations of my life with these Jews. Finally a little short man borrowed your book to read the next week, then another man and another. It seems that every Jew had heard of you. The book kept going all that summer and was still in circulation the next summer when I came back to Los Angeles. I requested that it be kept going, and the little man whom I had first met told me that he would keep it going. He said that the whole trouble with the Jewish people was that they had rejected the Messiah.

I have had some very interesting experiences with your books. A brilliant Jewish girl told me that the greatest desire of her heart was to have a true knowledge of God. She had her own ideas of what God should be. I told her to read the New Testament and she would get help. She would not do this at first but her spirit of investigation caused her to read not only the New Testament but your books as well. This girl, together with her father, mother, sisters, and brothers, was converted.

. . . . .

. . . . .

. . . . .

Pre-Tribulation Revival

Joel speaks about the pouring out of the Spirit of God upon Israel “before the great and terrible day of Jehovah.” If this expression refers to the Tribulation, as many prophetic students believe, there is to be a revival in Israel before the day of the Lord. Since there can be no revival apart from the preaching of the Word, we may be sure that this great ingathering of Jewish souls before the Tribulation will be the result of the preaching of the Word of God, which is now being done.

Schooling the Tribulation Evangelists

When the church is taken out of the world by the Rapture, the 144,000 Jewish servants of God (evangelists) of Revelation 7 must have the truth ready to hand so that they can grasp the message, go forth, and give it to the world in the short period of the first part of the Tribulation. These coming evangelists will have neither Bible schools nor institutes which they can attend and no one to whom to go for special training. How can they be prepared to go forth and give the message in the effective manner in which they minister the Word? Specially written books only can meet the need. Hence those who are assisting in sending forth this literature specially prepared for the Jew and adapted to his needs are in reality assisting in the training of these future evangelists. Many of God’s faithful servants are now either assisting in training young men for the ministry or supporting institutions in which they may prepare themselves for full-time service. But what is the church doing in training these noble young Jewish servants who will conduct the world-wide, soul-saving campaign after the church is removed from the earth? This is a most important question which demands an answer from every true and wise servant of God. Think on these things.

In the Future

The Revival in the First Part of the Tribulation According to Isaiah 26 and 42.

During these days we hear much about a revival — whether or not there will be one. Light is thrown upon this question by Isaiah 26. The prophet informs us that, “in that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah.” This song is recorded in chapter 26. The expression, “in that day,” refers to the Tribulation period as is seen by the general use of this phrase and by this special context. A part of that song will consist of the following words:

Yea, in the way of thy judgments, 0 Jehovah, have we waited for thee; to thy name, even to thy memorial name, is the desire of our soul. 9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee earnestly; for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.” (Isaiah 26:8,9)

Let us note the statement that “When thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.” When the appeal of love fails to melt the heart very frequently the Judgments of God drive men to their knees as is here foretold. Human experience has taught this fact.

In this connection we might glance at Isaiah 24. Verses 1 to 20 describe the Great Tribulation. Verses 14-16a give a side-light on the spiritual activity of that time, which is that of a world-wide revival that begins in the west, sweeps to the east, and then spreads out to the utmost parts of the earth. It is to be noted that this revival is during the time of the Great Tribulation.

We see also the prediction of a-world-wide revival in Isaiah 42:10-13. In this passage the prophet foretells the revival in terms of a command to the inhabitants of the world to sing a new song. One can never sing a new song unless he has a new experience. This method of making a prediction was common with the prophets. That which gives point and power to the message producing this revival is the doctrine that Jehovah will arise and go forth as a mighty man of war. The revival according to this passage occurs before the Lord goes forth and fights against his enemies, which is at the time of His glorious appearing.

From the New Testament we learn that this age is to end in apostasy and that, when the Lord comes for His saints, there will be very little faith upon this earth. “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). There is no promise of any world-wide, sweeping revival prior to the rapture of the church. Since, according to Isaiah there is to be a world-wide revival before the Lord comes and fights against His enemies, we must conclude that this revival occurs between these two events — the rapture of the church and the revelation of the Lord at the end of the Tribulation. Therefore, we must conclude from these passages and others that might be studied that there is to be a world-wide revival in the time of the Great Tribulation.

The consensus of opinion of all conservative, evangelical, premillennial Christians is that we are nearing the close of the age and that the Lord may come for His church at any time. Furthermore, many of the prophetic students are convinced that after the church is raptured out of the world, the 144,000 Jewish servants of God of whom we read in the seventh chapter of Revelation will take up the banner of our Lord Jesus Christ which is laid down by the ascending church and will go forth into every nook and corner of the world and proclaim Christ. The major results of their evangelistic efforts are seen in the vision, also found in Revelation 7, which immediately follows that of the prediction concerning these Jewish servants. According to the Apostle John, at that time an innumerable host of people from every tribe, tongue, and language hear the message of Christ’s redeeming love, accept Him, and wash their robes and make them white in the blood of the Lamb. From this and many other passages we are assured that this revival of the future will eclipse in magnitude and splendor all other soul-saving campaigns of the centuries.

According to Matthew 24:9-14

In speaking of the end of the age (Matthew 24:9-28) our Lord foretold the preaching of the gospel for a testimony unto all the nations. When this task is accomplished, the Tribulation will end. Since the church will be removed from the earth before it begins (I Thessalonians 4:13-5:7) and since the gospel will be preached for a testimony to all the nations at that time, the only conclusion to which one can come is that those who proclaim it are the Jewish evangelists of whom we read in Revelation 7. From this position there can be no logical escape.

According to II Thessalonians 2

The Apostle Paul in II Thessalonians 2 made certain declarations the implications of which are that the gospel is proclaimed to every creature during the first half of Daniel’s seventieth week. Prophetic students recognize the fact that the Tribulation lasts for seven years. In verses 1 and 2 of this chapter Paul was speaking of the Rapture and was endeavoring to forestall any possibility of the Thessalonian Christians‘ being moved from their faith by false reports declaring that the day of the Lord had already come. Following this exhortation the Apostle rapidly took his readers to the middle of the Tribulation period by calling attention to the man of sin who exalts himself above all that is called God and who sits in the Jewish temple presenting himself as God. When this fourth verse is read in the light of Daniel 9:27 we see that Paul was speaking of the events of the middle of Daniel’s seventieth week. At that time the Antichrist throws off his mask, lays aside his camouflage, and reveals his real self. Prior to this time, i.e., during the first half of the Tribulation, he has concealed his true nature by using suave speech and flattering words. At this time, however, laying aside all pretense and disguise, he shows his satanic character.

Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6 And now ye know that which restraineth, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way.” (II Thessalonians 2:5,6,7)

These verses are parenthetical in the passage. This position is shown by Paul’s calling his reader’s attention to the fact that he had explained these prophetic matters when he was with them. Verses 5 and 6 are obviously a retrospect and verse 7, which is linked to verse 6 by the conjunction “For” likewise is part of this bit of reminiscence. When this fact is seen it becomes evident that verse 8 picks up the thought where verse 4 drops it. Since the latter verse is talking about the events of the middle of Daniel’s seventieth week and since verse 8 is joined with it by the adverb “then,” we know that this verse is likewise speaking of the middle of Daniel’s seventieth week. Hence Paul tells us that this man of sin reveals his true nature at that time and that he by the working of Satan comes forth with powers, signs, and lying wonders to support his false claims. All who have not received a love of the truth but who have had pleasure in unrighteousness will be deceived by the pretentious assertions of this world dictator. The necessary inference of this passage is that the truth of God will have at that time been proclaimed to the whole world and that a certain type of people those who do not have a love of the truth and who have pleasure in unrighteousness — are the ones who are deceived by the false claims of this impious ruler. Truth possesses a certain attractiveness and an appeal of love to the heart of the honest. On the other hand, the unrighteous spurn the advances which truth makes to them when it is preached by these 144,000 Hebrew evangelists. Whenever men choose their own way in preference to God’s, He will send them a delusion or a working of error, in order that they might be confirmed in the lie which they choose, as is stated here by the Apostle Paul. Further confirmation of this principle is found in Isaiah 66:3,4.

Hence, without doubt, the second chapter of II Thessalonians presupposes the mighty, world-wide, sweeping revival of which we read in Revelation 7. After it has run for the first half of the Tribulation, the Antichrist steps forward, unmasks himself, lays aside his camouflage, asserts his dictatorial powers, suppresses the revival, and demands the worship of all nations. For his blasphemous and defiant attitude and action see Revelation 13.

During this mighty revival of the first half of the Tribulation an innumerable host of people will be saved — those who desire truth and who are hungering and thirsting after God. On the contrary, all of those who during the revival will not receive a love of the truth but have pleasure in unrighteousness will fall a ready victim to the deception of the Antichrist.

There are, according to reports, approximately two billions of people on the earth. Should we consider all in the so-called Christian nations as genuine, born-again Christians, which assumption is contrary to fact, there would be without doubt one billion people who have not one time heard the saving message. Since they have not thus far had an opportunity to praise God and rejoice in His salvation, Israel will be brought to the point that she will realize her God-appointed, spiritual mission and will pray for His blessing in order that these multiplied millions may have a chance to rejoice in God and in His salvation.

Since the Holy Spirit would not inspire such a petition and such a vision of the future as that seen in Psalm 67 unless it is to be realized, we may be absolutely certain that the real spiritual, soul-saving campaign in which multiplied millions of people will be won to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ will be conducted by these future Jewish evangelists to whom the church must now give the gospel.

In bringing this section to a close I wish to quote what Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, according to reports reaching my ears, said relative to the failure of Christians to make Christ known to Jewry. “For eighteen hundred years, certainly most of that time, Jews have not been given an opportunity to know what Christianity is, least of all to understand who Jesus is and what the Christ means. The very ignorance of the Jew touching Jesus condemns not the Jew but Christendom.” Dear brother, shall we at this critical period of the world’s history continue in our lethargy and allow the Jew to remain without a definite knowledge of Christ? The rabbi’s condemnation of our failure is just. By God’s grace let us arise in His strength and give this glorious message concerning our Lord to His brethren according to the flesh.

The Conversion of Israel at the End of the Tribulation

When we remember that in the call of Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3 and promises based thereon found in Genesis) the Lord declared His intention of blessing the world through him and his seed, we may be certain that He will not turn from this afore-announced purpose of using the Hebrew people in blessing the world.

By divine decree Israel was placed in the key position of the world. This fact is no surprise to one who realizes that God performed a biological miracle which made possible the birth of Isaac, the great progenitor of the Hebrew race. This He did, as we have seen, in order that He might be glorified in the world. In keeping with this plan He placed the nations in their respective territories when He alloted the earth to the peoples, but He did it with reference to the children of Israel, whom He placed in the key position of the world (Deuteronomy 32:8; Ezekiel 38:12).

While Israel was in fellowship with God, she was a channel of world-blessing, in that He gave His messages to the prophets and made the nation the repository of the divine oracles. Although she is out of fellowship with Him on account of her having rejected the Messiah, she is not cast aside. Yet in the future, she will turn to Him, that is, the remnant will, and become the channel of world-blessing. Her position in the world at that time will be analogous to that of the kingpin in the game of ninepins. The player, by hitting the kingpin knocks all of them at one stroke. If he hits any others he cannot make such a play. Israel is in the position of the kingpin. Hence, God’s heart is yearning over this people in order to bring them back into fellowship with Himself that they may be the ones through whom He will bring His blessings to the world.

That God will yet use her in the future is evident from Psalm 67. Psalm 67:1-4 is both a prayer, which the nation of Israel will use in the great Tribulation, and a prophecy of the marvelous role which she will play in the future great world-revival. A study of this passage shows that its outlook is from the eve of the Millennial Age. The nation of Israel living at that time will realize for the first time its God-given spiritual ministry to the nations and will pray for Him to be merciful unto her “that thy (God’s) way may be known upon the earth, thy salvation among all nations.” From this verse we learn that in the time here foreseen, God’s way and His salvation will not have been made known to the nations. Furthermore, this Scripture reveals the fact that Israel will plead for the Lord’s blessing upon her in order that she may be used of Him to make His way and His salvation known among the nations. In this impassioned prayer Israel at that time will continue her petition for mercy and His assistance, praising God and saying:

Let the peoples praise thee, 0 God;
Let all the peoples praise thee.
Oh let the nations be glad and sing for joy;
For thou wilt judge the peoples with equity,
And govern the nations upon earth.” (Psalm 67:3,4)

Chapter Four: Israel’s being Providentially Prepared for Her World Mission

God announced to Abraham that it was His intention to bless all nations through him and his seed (Genesis 12:1-3). This promise and plan are expanded in different utterances found in various connections throughout Genesis. God never goes back upon His plans, even though He may, humanly speaking, be delayed in carrying them out. For instance, when He created the world, He purposed that it should be inhabited (Isaiah 45:18). Satan by deception caused Eve to sin. This act of transgression brought ruin upon the earth. From that time to the present the curse has been lying very heavily upon the world and all things therein. This condition will continue until the Lord returns from Glory and lifts it from all creation (Romans 8:18-25). When we read the connection of Isaiah 45:18, we see that the prophet was talking about the glorious millennial reign of Christ. At the dawning of that day, the earth enters the period when it will be fully inhabited. This one case is proof that, even though the Almighty might be delayed in carrying out His purposes, He never abandons them but rather steers the course of history until conditions develop when He can carry out His original design.

During the days of Jacob conditions in Palestine were more or less unsettled; hence the Chosen People could not properly develop into a nation in such an environment. The Lord, knowing what was best for them, providentially prepared the way for their descent into Egypt by sending Joseph before them. He was elevated to the position of prime minister of the country. When the time arrived for Jacob and his family also to go, the Lord worked all things together for the good of His servants and providentially directed their way to the land of the Pharaohs. There under a highly organized government they grew into a mighty nation, the kings of the country being favorable to them. Under the patronage of royalty they settled down complacently and were satisfied to remain there. This was not God’s will for them. They were out of place — out of the land which the Lord had given to them, Palestine.

God always uses men and means to accomplish His purposes. He makes even “the wrath of man” to praise Him (Psalm 76:10). Therefore “there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph” (Exodus 1:8). This man dealt subtlely with the Hebrews and put them under a yoke of bondage the like of which they had not experienced. The Pharaohs of the Oppression were elevated to the position of power in order that the Lord might use them in weaning His people from the flesh pots of Egypt, the leek, and the garlic. Moses was born at the beginning of the period of bondage as one learns from a study of Exodus two. Since he was eighty years of age at the time of the deliverance from Egypt, the servitude lasted at least that long, growing in intensity as the years passed. Hence the popular conception that the Hebrews were in bondage for 400 years is a mistake, which is due to a misunderstanding of such passages as Genesis 15:12-14 and Acts 7:6. Under the galling yoke of servitude the children of Israel suffered. It took much persecution to bring them to the point that they were willing to leave the country for the land which the Lord had given to them and their forefathers. They, like many people today, learned the lesson of obedience very slowly. Nevertheless, when the Pharaoh of the Oppression, who was Thotmes III, as I shall show in Messiah: His First Coming Scheduled, died (Exodus 2:23,24), they cried to Jehovah by reason of their sufferings. He heard their groanings and remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Moses, who had fled from Egypt forty years prior to that time upon the death of Hatshepsut, “Pharaoh’s daughter” who drew him from the water and adopted him as her son, was in the land of Midian, keeping the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law. God always has a man prepared and ready to do His bidding. On this occasion he was the chosen servant whom the Lord was delighted to use in leading His people out from under the yoke of bondage. Hence the Lord appeared to him in “the burning bush,” calling and commissioning him to return to Egypt for the purpose of delivering His people (Exodus 3 and 4). The Lord met all of his objections regarding his being unfit for the task. Then he was willing to go and did so, returning to Egypt to begin his life’s work.

Moses had a rather difficult time convincing the children of Israel that God had sent him to deliver them (see Exodus 4:29 and 6:12). The Lord never forces one against his will. On the contrary, He sets the facts of His redeeming love before men and allows them to exercise that most precious faculty with which He endowed them, the freedom of the will and the power of choice. Nevertheless, He reasons with them. “Come, let us reason together, saith Jehovah” (Isaiah 1:18). He is persuasive, laying every inducement before them to accept that which is for their own good. He always stops short of overpowering the will or of mental coercion. If argument and logic coupled with a due amount of persuasion will not convince the intellect and move the will, He waits until adversity and providential circumstances bring one to the point that he will listen to reason. This very thing He was doing by means of the persecutions which He allowed to come upon them in the form of the bondage. Finally, Moses and Aaron by their clear testimony and demonstrations of divine powers miraculously conferred upon them convinced their brethren that the time had arrived for them to leave Egypt for the Promised Land. Being brought to this point they were willing to accept the deliverance which the Lord was desirous to bring about in their behalf.

On account of her rejection of King Messiah, Israel has been scattered among the nations for approximately nineteen hundred years. He has allowed her to exercise the power of choice and the freedom of the will. He has refused to coerce her. Of course, she has refused the testimony concerning redemption through the blood of Christ during this period. All who have taken this attitude have done so to their eternal sorrow.

As the time is drawing near for the Messiah to return in glory for the purpose of setting up His blessed reign of righteousness, the Lord is graciously allowing anti-Semitism to come out of its places of hiding and to stalk abroad throughout all lands. We see its deadly effects in Europe today. With the passing of each day anti-Jewish hatred and persecution are increasing in all lands. According to the Scriptures this satanically inspired feeling will eventually burst forth into a mighty conflagration of bitterest persecution throughout the world. To Isaiah was granted a very graphic vision of this last stroke of anti-Semitism, which we know will be dealt toward the close of the Tribulation (Isaiah 42:22). Those engaging in this titanic effort to destroy Israel will be profligates who abandon themselves to Satan and his wiles to be used at will. The sacred writer gave us another and detailed account of the horrors of that time in Psalm 74.

History, we are told, repeats itself. Undoubtedly this statement is true. As we have already seen, God raised up the Pharaohs of the Oppression to wean the Israelites from the flesh pots of Egypt. He is today raising up modern Pharaohs to do the same thing. As the years pass (possibly I should have said months) we may expect others to arise in the various countries to put on anti-Semitic drives against God’s ancient people. This is just what we may expect, if we are to judge by Israel’s experience in Egypt. We are logical in making this analogy since the deliverance from the bondage in the land of the Pharaohs is held up as a type of their being gathered out of all countries into the land of their fathers and since human nature is the same now as then.

God directs the course of history. The counsel of the nations shall be brought to naught but that of Jehovah shall stand fast forever (Psalm 33:10,11). His ordering and determining (never arbitrarily nor irrespective of man’s volition and actions) the channel through which the current of human events is now flowing are evident to the Scriptually-taught and spiritually-discerning people. His raising up these modern Pharaohs to persecute the Jews in order to turn their hearts to things spiritual and to create in their souls a longing for the land of their fathers is proof positive that we are close to the time for the final regathering of Israel and the dawn of that day without clouds (Jeremiah 23:7,8; II Samuel 23:4).

God is the potter and Israel is the clay. When I was in Jerusalem I went down to the potter’s house and saw a sight similar to the one observed by Jeremiah. (Read Jeremiah 18:1-12). The potter with his hands pressed the clay in different ways, making it assume successive shapes until he was able to develop it into the form which he had in mind. The clay had to pass through all stages in order to reach the final form. The same principle is true in the making of steel. In this respect Israel is like the steel and the clay. God is the master potter and she is indeed the clay. He is breaking, shaping, and making her so that she might be a vessel meet for the Master’s use, prepared unto every good work (compare II Timothy 2:20,21). Eventually the Lord will bring her to the point that she will cry out to Him:

But now, 0 Jehovah, thou art our Father;
we are the clay, and thou our potter;
and we all are the work of thy hand.” (Isaiah 64:8)

At the present time God is shaping Israel. He is using the modern Pharaohs to put the pressure on her. Through them He is accomplishing that which He could bring to pass in no other way. At the same time He is using the message of His Word, which is flowing out to the entire nation in the form of properly prepared books, booklets, and tracts, together with the oral proclamation of the Word by the various agencies now laboring faithfully among His ancient people, in shaping her to become a chosen vessel to give forth His Word to all nations. This ministry is necessary to the moulding of the clay and the shaping of the vessel.

The persecutors of Israel can not escape the judgment of the curse with which He threatened all who curse His people (Genesis 12:1-3). On the other hand, those who through love for God and His people faithfully proclaim His Word to them will come in for the special blessing promised in this passage. 0 brethren, let us give the message of redeeming love to His people while it is day, for the night is fast approaching.

That the present troubles which are befalling the Jews are preparing their hearts for things spiritual is evident from the following quotation which is an excerpt from “The Truth About Germany and the Jews” by Will H. Houghton, D.D., President of Moody Bible Institute, in The Sunday School Times, Sept. 2, 1934.

“What has been the effect of this persecution on the Jews who are left in Germany? There is a religious revival. They are not turning to Christianity, of course. The Christians (?) are their persecutors. They are turning back to the synagogue. Before the outbreak the synagogue was quite deserted — now it is overcrowded.”

Since they are turning back to spiritual values, now is the opportunity to give them God’s Word. But the only method open to us is that of the printed page. Let us be wise and avail ourselves of this most efficient method of proclaiming the truth to those who otherwise would never have an opportunity of hearing it.

Chapter Five: Jewish Sections of Palestine Blossoming as the Rose

Frequently we are told that Palestine is at the present time blossoming as the rose under the magic touch of the thrift and industry of the Jewish people as they are returning to the land. This statement is rather broad. The truth about the matter is that those sections of Palestine which have been purchased by the Jews and which are now being developed are the ones that are blossoming as the rose. The rest of the land with the exception of the highways which have been constructed since the war is just the same as it has been through the centuries with the exception of the wreckage of time.

According to statements which I learned in 1937 from the Jewish Agencies, the Jews have purchased seven per cent of the land. It is this small portion of the country that is being developed and is blossoming as a rose. The remaining 93 per cent, which largely is in the hands of the Arabs, is in the same condition as formerly. In no wise can one say that this major portion of the country is blossoming as a rose.

The Jewish population according to the Palestinian government amounted to a little over 425,000 as of December 31, 1936. These figures appeared in the local Jerusalem paper in January, 1937. During 1937 and the first six months of 1938, of course, there has been a limited immigration which has swelled the grand total mentioned above. At the present I do not have the official figures. It is worthy of note that more than ten times as many Jews have returned to Palestine under the impulse of the Zionistic movement than came back under Zerubbabel and Joshua after the Babylonian captivity.

If the unrest in Palestine could be allayed, if the Jews could be permitted to enter there as rapidly as they are able to do, and if there is no European or general war in the next ten years, Palestine might become one of the most influential countries in the world. This fact would be possible because of its central location, Jewish ingenuity, and wealth.

In 1937 there were over two hundred and twenty colonies and settlements throughout the plains of Sharon, the Emek Israel, and upper Galilee. In these portions of the country most of the Jewish colonization projects are carried out. It is true that a few attempts along this line have been made in the hill country.

Everything that is accomplished by the Jews in Palestine is done according to the latest scientific methods. The result is that their efforts are always successful.

The Jews are returning to Palestine with a nationalism and a devotion to the country such as is nowhere else, so far as I know, to be found. This fact is an important matter because from it alone we know that we are approaching the time when the Messiah will arise and return to Zion, according to Psalm 102:11f.

The present return to the land of the fathers is the beginning of the fulfillment of the vision of the Valley of Dry Bones in Ezekiel 37. In the language of this prediction the bones are coming together each to its companion, and the sinews uniting them are beginning to appear. This process of development will continue until the nation is restored and settled in the land.

But the Spirit of Life will never enter the body politic until the gospel of grace is given to the Jews and they receive the true Messiah as their Lord, Saviour, and King. When they accept Him nationally, the remnant surviving at that time will rise up in the power of its new life and will go forth into every nook and corner of the world proclaiming the unsearchable riches of Jesus Christ. This fact is in accordance with the promises made to Abraham, the great progenitor of the Hebrew race. God will yet use His ancient people in blessing the entire world. Let us who know the Lord in a personal manner do what we can in giving this message of grace and truth to Israel speedily in order that, humanly speaking, we may hasten the day for the coming of King Messiah.
