Nor is its purpose to deal with the details of each piece of furniture, therefore, it will be limited to a study of the Tabernacle in Exodus 25–30.

Unfortunately, there have been a lot of fanciful interpretations concerning the Christological or Messianic significance of the various items found in the Tabernacle. Some people have tried to find some kind of significance in every color, every nail, and every measurement, but that is not the intent of the Scriptures. For that reason, many interpretations are purely fanciful. One example concerns the color blue. Many books on the Tabernacle state that the color blue represents Heaven. But when the question is asked, “How do you know that the color blue represents Heaven?” they have to resort to guesswork such as, “Well, the sky is blue.” Yes, the sky is blue, but only during the daytime. At night the sky happens to be black rather than blue. Sometimes during sunrises and sunsets, the sky tends to be on the reddish side. The point is that the Bible nowhere states that blue is a picture or a symbol of Heaven. One must be careful not to apply meanings to things that the Bible itself never does.

The proper way of interpreting the Messianic or Christological significance of the Tabernacle is the same way it is done in the Book of Hebrews 9:1–10. In this passage, the writer deals with the various features of the Tabernacle, but he does not try to interpret every detail. He simply points out that these things are a general outline, a general way of showing the fulfillment that was to come through the Messiah. This is the way the meaning of the Tabernacle should be interpreted.

One must not try to find a meaning to every measurement, every color, every minute item, because then one must resort to guesswork and give a meaning to these things that was never intended by the Word of God. One should take each piece as a whole, then let the Bible itself interpret it Christologically or Messianically, and leave it at that. This will keep one from resorting to guesswork and sensationalism, which will, in turn, prevent interpreting the Bible wrongly.

I. The Names for the Tabernacle

The Tabernacle is given a total of six different names by the Scriptures. First, it is called tabernacle (Ex. 25:9). The Hebrew word for tabernacle has the concept of “dwelling.” The Hebrew word Shechinah comes from the same root as the word tabernacle and it emphasizes the visible dwelling of God.

The second name is sanctuary (Ex. 25:8). When the Bible called the Tabernacle a sanctuary, it emphasized the holiness of the Tabernacle.

A third name for the Tabernacle is Tent (Ex. 26:36). When it is called the Tent, the characteristic of temporariness is emphasized because of its somewhat flimsy construction. It is evident that God did not intend for the Tabernacle to last forever.

A fourth name is tent of meeting (Ex. 29:42). Again, the word tent emphasized its temporary nature. The term meeting emphasized what was happening there; this was where God met with Israel through her representatives, in particular, the high priest.

The fifth name is tabernacle of testimony (Ex. 38:21). Again, the word tabernacle emphasized the place where God was going to dwell, and the word testimony emphasized that it was a testifying aspect to God’s reality and God’s existence.

The sixth name is the tent of the testimony (Num. 9:15). Again, the word tent emphasized its temporary character, and the word testimony emphasized that this was testifying to the truth of God’s presence and God’s existence.

II. The Features and Furniture of the Tabernacle

God reveals the plans for the building for the Tabernacle to Moses in Exodus 25:1–9: And Jehovah spoke unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they take for me an offering: of every man whose heart makes him willing ye shall take my offering. The people are not forced to give, rather they are asked to give. In verses 3–7, the fifteen items needed for the building of the Tabernacle are listed.

The purpose of this freewill offering is given in verse 8: for the building of a sanctuary. God gives the reason: that I may dwell among them.

In verse 9, the pattern that Moses is to use is the Tabernacle in Heaven (Heb. 8:5). Moses will be given a vision of the Heavenly Tabernacle and he is to build the earthly Tabernacle in the exact manner.

There are fifteen features and items of furniture and each will be discussed as they appear sequentially in these passages.

A. The Ark Itself—Exodus 25:10–16

And they shall make an ark of acacia wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And you shall overlay it with pure gold, within and without shall you overlay it, and shall make upon it a crown of gold round about. And you shall cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four feet thereof; and two rings shall be on the one side of it, and two rings on the other side of it. And you shall make staves of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. And you shall put the staves into the rings on the sides of the ark, wherewith to bear the ark. The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it. And you shall put into the ark the testimony which I shall give you.

The Ark itself was an item of furniture that was placed in the innermost room of the Tabernacle, the Holy of Holies. It was a small, rectangular box, measuring 33¾ feet long by 21¼ feet wide by 21¼ feet high.

The Ark of the Covenant emphasized the concept of satisfaction in that it was here that the wrath of God was satisfied or appeased. The Ark of the Covenant signified God’s presence. It was the symbol of the Shechinah Glory. The Shechinah Glory was the visible manifestation of God’s presence.

The Messianic significance is that it was the symbol of the coming of Jesus, the God-Man and the Shechinah Glory. John 1:14 states: And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth.

The Greek word used for the English term “dwelling” was actually borrowed from the Hebrew word Shechinah. Again, the word Shechinah has the same Hebrew root as the word tabernacle. Just as in Exodus 40, in a visible way, in the form of the Shechinah Glory, God took up His residence in the Holy of Holies and “tabernacled” among men; according to this verse, in the same way, Yeshua (Jesus), who was also a visible manifestation of God’s presence, for a period of time tabernacled among men.

The significance of the Ark of the Covenant is that it symbolizes God’s presence; it is a symbol of the Shechinah Glory; and it becomes particularly the symbol of the Shechinah Glory that Jesus was.

2. According to Ezekiel 1, cherubim are closely related to the throne of God. The significance of the cherubim over the mercy-seat was that it symbolized the throne of God in 1 Samuel 4:4 and the throne of grace in Hebrews 4:16.

The significance of the mercy-seat is that it was the place of propitiation; this was the place where sins were covered. The word “propitiation” means, “to appease the wrath of God.”

The Messianic significance of the mercy-seat was that it was a symbol of Yeshua as our propitiation. The wrath of God, which was revealed against all ungodliness, and unrighteousness of man, the wrath that burned against sin and demanded punishment for sin, was finally appeased or satisfied by the death of the Messiah and satisfied the holy demands of a righteous God. The Contents of the Ark

The contents of the Ark are given in Hebrews 9:4b: wherein was a golden pot holding the manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant.

The fact that manna was to be placed in the Ark was stated in Exodus 16:33. The manna was a symbol of spiritual food (1 Cor. 10:3). It pictures Jesus as the true bread out of heaven (Jn. 6:30–35). Just as the manna came down from Heaven, even so Yeshua, the Bread of Life, came down from Heaven. Just as manna sustained the Jews physically in the wilderness, even so this Bread sustains the believer spiritually; it is the spiritual sustenance of the believer (Rev. 2:17).

The second item, Aaron’s rod that budded, was to be placed in the Ark according to Numbers 17:8–11. It was a symbol of the priesthood of Aaron in that Aaron was definitely the one that God had chosen to function as the high priest. In that sense, it pictured the future high priest to come.

The third item was the tables of the covenant (Deut. 10:2; 31:25–26). The Ten Commandments symbolized the whole Law of God. The Law itself was always a unit of 613 commandments in its entirety. As a result, it symbolized the righteous Law of God. Failure to obey this Law resulted in sin, and the Tabernacle was built in order to deal with the problem of sin.

5. The History of the Ark

After the Ark was built, it was carried by one family of the Tribe of Levi known as the Kohathites throughout the Wilderness Wanderings (Num. 3:30–31; 10:33).

The Ark of the Covenant was the first thing to cross the Jordan River (Josh. 3:1–17). It was also carried around the walls of Jericho, showing forth the power of God to bring down those walls (Josh. 6:1–16). Throughout Israel’s history, the Ark was used as a counselor for and to Israel (Judg. 20:26–28).

In the days of Samuel, the Israelites took the Ark of the Covenant into battle with the Philistines. This was a wrong use of the Ark because they used it as a “good luck charm,” a purpose for which it was never the intended. As a result, it was captured by the Philistines (1 Sam. 4:1–22). For the next several months, the Ark was in Philistine hands, traveling through three of the five Philistine cities (1 Sam. 5:1–6:18). But eventually, because it was creating so much trouble for the Philistines, it was returned to Israel at the Jewish town of Beth-shemesh (1 Sam. 6:19–21).

For the next twenty years, it was in the private home of Abinadab, who lived in Kiriath-jearim, where the Ark had been transferred from Beth-shemesh (1 Sam. 7:1–2).

David attempted to bring the Ark into Jerusalem one day, but he used the wrong people to do it (2 Sam. 6:1–5). This violated the Law of Moses, and death occurred (2 Sam. 6:6–8). For a while, David was afraid to carry the Ark any further. So it remained in another private home, the house of Obed-edom (2 Sam. 6:9–11). After three months, David was successful in bringing it to Jerusalem, using the proper means (2 Sam. 6:12–16; 1 Chr. 15:1–16:4).

When Solomon built the Temple, the Ark of the Covenant was transferred from the Holy of Holies of the Tabernacle into the Holy of Holies of the Temple (2 Chr. 5:1–14). That is where it stayed until the time of the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem. The Bible points out that, at the Babylonian destruction, various items were carried to Babylon (2 Kg. 25:9–17; 2 Chr. 36:18–19). Among the things not listed as having been carried away was the Ark of the Covenant.

There are many legends, Jewish legends in particular, with some Christians jumping on the bandwagon in recent years, which claim that the Ark was hidden by Jeremiah somewhere in the Temple mount or it was hidden by someone else in the land of Jordan. This is all fanciful thinking. The text of 2 Kings 25 and 2 Chronicles also makes it clear that those things, which the Babylonians did not carry away to Babylon, were burned with fire. The Ark of the Covenant was merely a wooden box, overlaid with gold. In all probability, what the Babylonians would have done was simply to strip the gold off the box and burn the wood, and that was that. When the Jews rebuilt the Temple seventy years later, the Ark of the Covenant was among those items missing; it had been destroyed. So it is useless to look for the Ark of the Covenant. It will not be found. In fact, it will never be rebuilt (Jer. 3:15–16).

B. First, it symbolized God as the light of Israel (1 Jn. 1:5). Secondly, it symbolized Yeshua as the light of the world (Lk. 1:78–79; 2:32; Jn. 1:7–9; 8:12; 9:5; 12:46; 2 Cor. 4:6; Rev. 21:23–24). Thirdly, it symbolized the believer in that the believer is spoken of as being light (Mat. 5:14–17; Lk. 12:35; Eph. 5:8–9; Phil. 2:15). For that reason, the believer is also to walk in the light (1 Jn. 1:7). And fourthly, it symbolizes the Church as the light as well (Rev. 1:20).

D. The Ark of the Covenant was placed within the Holy of Holies. This was a special room into which only the high priest was permitted to enter, and then only on one day of the year to offer the blood of the sacrifice. On the Day of Atonement, he would go into the Holy of Holies twice; the first time he entered was to offer the blood for his own sins and the second time was to offer the blood for the sins of the people.

Verse 33 states that the purpose of the Veil was to separate the Holy of Holies, which contained the Ark of the Covenant and the presence of the Shechinah Glory, from the Holy Place, which contained the Table of Showbread on the north side, the Lampstand toward the south, and the Altar of Incense.

The significance of the Veil is that it was a symbol of the principle of access to God; it marked a point of separation in two ways. First, the Veil that separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place also separated the high priest from all the common priests; only the high priest was allowed to go through that Veil. This separation meant that only one man, out of one family, out of one tribe, out of one nation, out of the entire world, was ever allowed to enter into the very presence of God. Even for him, it was only for one day out of the entire year, the Day of Atonement. Secondly, it symbolized a separation between God and man in that no one had access to the presence of God, except this one being.

It was this Veil that split from top to bottom at the moment of the death of Jesus (Mat. 27:51). The rending or tearing of the Veil demonstrated that the separation between God and man had now been broken by the death of Yeshua; now all have access to God through faith (Heb. 9:12; 10:19–22). The rending of the Veil meant that access to God was no longer limited to one man, out of one family, out of one tribe, out of one nation, of the all the nations of the world. All have access to God’s presence merely by accepting Jesus as Messiah.

Because it was the death of Yeshua that caused the separation to end and caused the rending of the Veil, this Veil also was the symbol of the body of Jesus (Heb. 10:20). It was through the death of His body that this access was now provided.

E. The Altar of Sacrifice emphasized the entire concept of justification, for it was here that the blood was actually shed. The Altar of Sacrifice was outside the Tabernacle building in the courtyard. This was the place where the sacrifices were killed and where blood was shed. Blood was never shed within the Tabernacle itself; neither room ever saw the shedding of blood, but the shed blood was then brought into the Holy of Holies.

The significance of the Altar of Sacrifice is threefold. First, it teaches that access to God was always by means of blood (Lev. 17:11; 1 Tim. 2:5–6; Heb. 9:15, 22). Secondly, it signifies Yeshua as the final sacrifice, that His shed blood would be the final shedding of blood insofar as sacrifice for sin is concerned. In Hebrews 9:1–10:18, this truth is given a very lengthy treatment by the writer, who spends a lot of time comparing the work of Jesus with the things going on in the Tabernacle. The third significance is that it symbolizes Yeshua as the Altar itself (Heb. 13:10–15). He is not only the final sacrifice, but the very Altar itself.

G. The hangings, which were made of fine-twined linen, surrounded the entire Tabernacle area. The Court was a rather large area, 75 feet wide and 150 feet long.

By way of significance, the court of the tabrnacle also taught the principle of separation and access to God in that it separated Jews from Gentiles. Only Jews were allowed to go through the fence into the courtyard. Secondly, Leviticus 8:8 makes the same point. Thirdly, it was used as a way of inquiring of the Lord (Num. 27:21). Fourthly, it belonged to the Tribe of Levi (Deut. 33:8). Fifth, it provided no answer for Saul even though he inquired of the urim and the thummim (1 Sam. 28:6). Sixth, Ezra 2:63 stated that it was one of the things missing in the Second Temple. The Significance of the Clothing

The basic significance of the clothing of the high priest and the other common priests was the concept of separation in that they were separated, sanctified or set apart, for divine use. The common priests had one type of clothing, and the high priest had a special type of clothing.

The significance of the clothing of the priests was twofold. First, it emphasized the holiness of God. Secondly, it signified the need for an intermediary in that no Jew was free to go up to the Tabernacle, offer his own sacrifice, then walk into the Holy of Holies to sprinkle the blood. He needed the priesthood of Israel to do all this for him. Sometimes the mediators were the common priests, but sometimes only one man would do, such as in the case of the high priest on the Day of Atonement when only the high priest was allowed to function for and on behalf of Israel. So the whole priestly system symbolized the need for a mediator between God and man. While the prophets represented God to man, the priests represented man to God.

2. The Responsibilities of the Priesthood

The responsibilities of the priesthood were fivefold. First, they were to burn the Incense on the Altar of Incense (Ex. 30:7–8).

Secondly, they were responsible for burning the offerings and sacrifices (Ex. 29:38–42; Lev. 6:13). While the Incense was burned on the Altar of Incense within the Holy Place, the sacrifices were slaughtered and burned on the Altar of Sacrifice outside the Tabernacle in the courtyard.

The third responsibility of the priesthood was to inspect the animals before the sacrifice to make sure these animals were without spot and without blemish (Lev. 27:11–12).

The fourth responsibility of the priesthood was to keep the lamp burning so that the seven branched Lampstand would be continually burning (Lev. 24:1–4).

The fifth responsibility was to teach Israel (Deut. 17:8–13; 19:15–20; 21:5). It should be remembered that, at this time of history, it was impossible for everyone to possess their own copy of the Scriptures. This was not to be until the printing press was invented. So the Tribe of Levi was given the responsibility to maintain the Scriptures by making new copies after the old copies became worn, and they were to teach the other tribes of Israel the Law of Moses, which were the Scriptures of that day.

For this reason, the Tribe of Levi was not given any tribal territory of their own. No map of the tribes of Israel will ever show a segment of the land given to the Levites. Instead, all the other tribes were told to set aside certain cities within their tribal districts where the Levites could live. From these Levitical cities, they went out to be the teachers of Israel.

K. The Altar of Incense—Exodus 30:1–10

And you shall make an altar to burn incense upon: of acacia wood shall you make it. And Aaron shall make atonement upon the horns of it once in the year; with the blood of the sin-offering of atonement once in the year shall he make atonement for it throughout your generations: it is most holy unto Jehovah.

The eleventh feature of the Tabernacle was the Altar of Incense. This Altar was distinct from two other altars mentioned so far. It was distinct from the Altar of Sacrifice in the courtyard in front of the Screen, which served as a doorway to the Tabernacle. It was also distinct from the Ark of the Covenant with the mercy-seat that functioned as an altar in the Holy of Holies.

The Altar of Incense stood in the first room, the Holy Place, right in front of the Veil separating the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place. In performing the function of the burning of Incense, a priest would take a hot coal from the Altar of Sacrifice outside the Tabernacle building, bring it into the Holy Place, and place the hot coal upon the Altar of Incense. He would then drop Incense on this hot coal; this would cause cloud of smoke to rise that would penetrate through the veil into the Holy of Holies and would become a sweet smelling savor offering before the Lord.

While the Altar of Incense stood in the Holy Place, its function was for the Holy of Holies. That perhaps explains why, in Hebrews 9:3–4, the Altar of Incense was said to be in the Holy of Holies. It was not physically present there, but its ministry or purpose was for the Holy of Holies, not for the Holy Place.

The significance of the Altar of Incense is that it symbolizes the prayers of the saints. Just as the smoke went into the presence of God, even so the prayers of the saints go into the presence of God. This is taught in the Old Testament in Psalm 141:2 and in the New Testament in Revelation 5:8 and 8:3–4.

L. Every one that passes over unto them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering of Jehovah. The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when they give the offering of Jehovah, to make atonement for your souls. And you shall take the atonement money from the children of Israel, and shall appoint it for the service of the tent of meeting; that it may be a memorial for the children of Israel before Jehovah, to make atonement for your souls.

The twelfth feature concerning the Tabernacle was the Atonement Money, which later became known as the “Temple tax.” Each male had to pay half a shekel that was to be used for the support of the Sanctuary. This was considered an offering for God. Verse 13 calls it the shekel of the sanctuary, meaning it was a special coin that was minted for paying the Tabernacle tax and later the Temple tax. Every male from twenty years old and upward would be obligated to pay the half-shekel, no matter whether he was rich or poor.

The significance of the Atonement Money is the principle that God’s work must be supported by God’s people, the Jewish people. God’s work, in this case was the Tabernacle. Gentiles were not obligated to pay this half-shekel; only the Jews were obligated to pay it. So in that sense, it was God’s people, Israel, supporting God’s work in the Tabernacle.

In the same way, God’s work today is being done through the Church, so believers are obligated to support the Church. God’s work is being done through missionary endeavors, so there is a responsibility of believers to support missionary endeavors, whether these are missionaries sent out by the local church directly or missionaries working for mission agencies such as Ariel Ministries, whose purpose is to field missionaries to the Jewish people. This kind of work needs to be supported by God’s people and only God’s people. Just as Gentiles were not to support the Tabernacle unless they became members of the commonwealth of Israel by taking upon themselves the obligation of the Law, even so, unbelievers should not be allowed to support the work of God today. It is for reasons like this, among many others, that Ariel Ministries will never knowingly accept monetary gifts from unbelievers. We strongly believe that only believers should be supporting God’s work. So by policy, Ariel Ministries will not knowingly accept finances or contributions from unbelievers. On several occasion in our history it has been necessary to return funds because it was clear from the letters which accompanied the checks that they were not from believers. Therefore, we could not accept the money.

M. That is why the Word functions like a mirror in that it shows us our shortcomings (Jas. 1:22–25).

N. Oil itself is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. This special Anointing Oil symbolizes the anointing that Jesus received, not by a literal oil, but by the Holy Spirit.
