DEFINITIONS<\/p>\n<p>A.      What Is Aging?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Aging is a process of growing physically, mentally and emotionally in order to move toward maturity.<br \/>\n\u201cPerseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature.\u201d (James 1:4)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Maturity in the New Testament is translated from the Greek word teleios, which means \u201ccomplete\u201d or \u201cgrowth in mental and moral character.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBut solid food is for the mature.\u201d (Hebrews 5:14)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      God\u2019s purpose in the process of aging is to bring you to spiritual maturity through deepening your faith and developing your awareness of and dependence on the abiding presence of Christ within you.<br \/>\n\u201cUntil we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.\u201d (Ephesians 4:13)<\/p>\n<p>B.      What Are the Seasons of Aging?<\/p>\n<p>SPRINGTIME<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, \u2018I find no pleasure in them.\u2019&nbsp;\u201d<br \/>\n(Ecclesiastes 12:1)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Approximate Age:<br \/>\n\u2014      Young adults (ages 20\u201340)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Common Characteristics:<br \/>\n\u2014      The years of seeking personal fulfillment<br \/>\n\u2014      The peak years of health and energy<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Measurement of Maturity:<br \/>\n\u2014      Trust<br \/>\n\u201cTrust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.\u201d (Proverbs 3:5)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Failure to Grow:<br \/>\n\u2014      Reaps the inability to develop intimate relationships<br \/>\n\u2014      Results in missing God-given opportunities in life<br \/>\n\u201cThe seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life\u2019s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.\u201d (Luke 8:14)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.\u201d<br \/>\n(Ecclesiastes 3:1)<\/p>\n<p>SUMMER<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Approximate Age:<br \/>\n\u2014      Middle adults (ages 40\u201365)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Common Characteristics:<br \/>\n\u2014      The years of investing time and effort helping others<br \/>\n\u2014      The years of creativity and productivity<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Measurement of Maturity:<br \/>\n\u2014      Selflessness<br \/>\n\u201cDo nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.\u201d (Philippians 2:3)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Failure to Grow:<br \/>\n\u2014      Reaps bondage, burnout and midlife crises<br \/>\n\u2014      Results in undeveloped character<br \/>\n\u201cHe is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.\u201d (James 1:8)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.\u201d<br \/>\n(Colossians 4:12)<\/p>\n<p>AUTUMN<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Approximate Age:<br \/>\n\u2014      Senior adults (ages 65\u201380)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Common Characteristics:<br \/>\n\u2014      The years of turning over leadership and control to others<br \/>\n\u2014      The years of physical decline<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Measurement of Maturity:<br \/>\n\u2014      Acceptance<br \/>\n\u201cI am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.\u201d (Philippians 4:11)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Failure to Grow:<br \/>\n\u2014      Reaps rejection of self and others<br \/>\n\u2014      Results in a heart hardened toward God<br \/>\n\u201cThey are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.\u201d (Ephesians 4:18)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will renew your life and sustain you in your old age.\u201d<br \/>\n(Ruth 4:15)<\/p>\n<p>WINTER<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Approximate Age:<br \/>\n\u2014      Elderly adults (ages 80 +)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Common Characteristics:<br \/>\n\u2014      The years of dignity and self-respect<br \/>\n\u2014      The years of receiving physical assistance from others<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Measurement of Maturity:<br \/>\n\u2014      Wisdom<br \/>\n\u201cIs not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?\u201d (Job 12:12)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Failure to Grow:<br \/>\n\u2014      Reaps loss of meaning or purpose to life<br \/>\n\u2014      Results in facing death without hope<br \/>\n\u201cSo I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.\u201d (Ecclesiastes 2:17)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life.\u201d<br \/>\n(Proverbs 16:31)<\/p>\n<p>II.      CHARACTERISTICS<\/p>\n<p>Moving from season to season will bring marked changes to your life. By God\u2019s design, the budding green of spring ultimately fades to winter white. Yet, as the body ages physically, the life that is planted in Christ will blossom spiritually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.\u201d<br \/>\n(Psalm 1:3)<\/p>\n<p>A.      Physical Wilting\u2014Natural Body Deterioration<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, \u2018I find no pleasure in them\u2019\u2014before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain; when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men stoop, when the grinders cease because they are few, and those looking through the windows grow dim; when the doors to the street are closed and the sound of grinding fades; when men rise up at the sound of birds, but all their songs grow faint; when men are afraid of heights and of dangers in the streets; when the almond tree blossoms and the grasshopper drags himself along and desire no longer is stirred. Then man goes to his eternal home and mourners go about the streets.\u201d<br \/>\n(Ecclesiastes 12:1\u20135)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Decreased coordination (trembling)<br \/>\nv. 3<br \/>\n\u2022      Deteriorating posture (stooping)<br \/>\nv. 3<br \/>\n\u2022      Dwindling number of teeth<br \/>\nv. 3<br \/>\n\u2022      Dimmed eyesight<br \/>\nv. 3<br \/>\n\u2022      Dulled hearing<br \/>\nv. 4<br \/>\n\u2022      Difficulty sleeping<br \/>\nv. 4<br \/>\n\u2022      Declining ability to protect<br \/>\nv. 5<br \/>\n\u2022      Depleted hair pigment (white blossoms meaning white hair)<br \/>\nv. 5<br \/>\n\u2022      Drained energy<br \/>\nv. 5<br \/>\n\u2022      Diminished sexual drive<br \/>\nv. 5<\/p>\n<p>GOD\u2019S PROMISE<br \/>\n\u201cTherefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.\u201d<br \/>\n(2 Corinthians 4:16)<\/p>\n<p>B.      Emotional Withering\u2014Negative Feelings and Attitudes<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me.\u201d<br \/>\n(Job 17:1)<\/p>\n<p>FEELINGS<br \/>\nATTITUDES<br \/>\n\u2022      lonely<br \/>\n\u2022      critical<br \/>\n\u2022      unwanted<br \/>\n\u2022      pessimistic<br \/>\n\u2022      forgotten<br \/>\n\u2022      dogmatic<br \/>\n\u2022      helpless<br \/>\n\u2022      negative<br \/>\n\u2022      useless<br \/>\n\u2022      bitter<br \/>\n\u2022      fearful<br \/>\n\u2022      stubborn<br \/>\n\u2022      sad<br \/>\n\u2022      irritable<br \/>\n\u2022      hopeless<br \/>\n\u2022      ungrateful<\/p>\n<p>GOD\u2019S PROMISE<br \/>\n\u201cGod is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.\u201d<br \/>\n(2 Corinthians 9:8)<\/p>\n<p>C.      Spiritual Blooming\u2014Evidence of Maturity<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.\u201d<br \/>\n(Philippians 1:20\u201321)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      A divine perspective on the seasons of aging<br \/>\n\u2022      A courage that accepts change and challenge<br \/>\n\u2022      A personal commitment to godly morals and values<br \/>\n\u2022      An acceptance of oneself and others<br \/>\n\u2022      An ability to laugh at personal mistakes<br \/>\n\u2022      A desire to serve others<br \/>\n\u2022      An ability to live one day at a time<br \/>\n\u2022      A deepening faith and hope in the future<\/p>\n<p>GOD\u2019S PROMISE<br \/>\n\u201cThe righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.\u201d<br \/>\n(Psalm 92:12\u201314)<\/p>\n<p>III.      CAUSES OF DISCONTENTMENT<\/p>\n<p>A.      Looking at Losses<\/p>\n<p>Aging involves many forms of loss, and if there is an unbalanced focus on what \u201conce was,\u201d there is no spiritual growth. Maturity cannot bloom in the infertile soil of prolonged grief and depression. Consider the trees\u2014they do not mourn the loss of leaf and limb, for this is God\u2019s way to newer and greater heights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail.\u201d<br \/>\n(Job 14:7)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      loss of health<br \/>\n\u2022      loss of home<br \/>\n\u2022      loss of dreams<br \/>\n\u2022      loss of control<br \/>\n\u2022      loss of income<br \/>\n\u2022      loss of independence<br \/>\n\u2022      loss of loved ones<br \/>\n\u2022      loss of hope<\/p>\n<p>B.      Root Cause<\/p>\n<p>Storms invade each season of life, but negative thinking toward these winds of adversity is the root of immaturity.<\/p>\n<p>FEAR<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Failure to trust God and others with honest self-disclosure results in the inability to develop mature, intimate relationships.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014      Fearful Thinking:<br \/>\n\u201cIf I confront him with how I really feel, he will become angry and reject me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThere is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.\u201d (1 John 4:18)<\/p>\n<p>REBELLION<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Disobedience toward God by seeking self-fulfillment in the false gods of greed, power and immorality destroys commitment and the desire to serve the needs of others.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014      Rebellious Thinking:<br \/>\n\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with getting a divorce if it means I have a chance to receive true love and happiness.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201c&nbsp;\u2018Only acknowledge your guilt\u2014you have rebelled against the LORD your God, you have scattered your favors to foreign gods under every spreading tree, and have not obeyed me,\u2019 declares the LORD.\u201d (Jeremiah 3:13)<\/p>\n<p>BITTERNESS<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Resentment toward God and those who have not fulfilled your expectations will grow bitter roots that destroy acceptance of yourself and others.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014      Bitter Thinking:<br \/>\n\u201cMy father never gave me the attention or approval I needed, and now my husband is treating me the same way.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSee to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.\u201d (Hebrews 12:15)<\/p>\n<p>PRIDE<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Reliance on personal effort and the belief that life can be lived successfully on your own blinds you to truth and the judgment of God.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014      Prideful Thinking:<br \/>\n\u201cGod was never around when I needed Him. I am the master of my own fate.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIn his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.\u201d (Psalm 10:4)<\/p>\n<p>Cultivating seeds of fear in Spring produce selfish Summer flings, then Autumn roots of bitter taste make Winter seem a barren waste!<\/p>\n<p>WRONG BELIEF:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no meaning left in life. I am useless, unloved and a burden to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RIGHT BELIEF:<\/p>\n<p>Meaning and purpose for my life comes from the indwelling presence of Christ, who is daily renewing my strength and growing His character in me.<br \/>\n\u201cTherefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.\u201d (2 Corinthians 4:16)<\/p>\n<p>IV.      STEPS TO SOLUTION<\/p>\n<p>A.      Key Verse to Memorize<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.\u201d<br \/>\n(Isaiah 46:4)<\/p>\n<p>B.      Key Passage to Read and Reread<\/p>\n<p>2 Corinthians 4:17\u20135:10<\/p>\n<p>ETERNAL EYESIGHT<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Look at life\u2019s storms as opportunities for eternal praise<br \/>\nv. 4:17<br \/>\n\u2022      Focus your thoughts on the unseen spiritual world<br \/>\nv. 4:18<br \/>\n\u2022      See your present circumstances as only temporary<br \/>\nv. 4:18<br \/>\n\u2022      Understand that God is preparing a new body for you<br \/>\nv. 5:1<br \/>\n\u2022      Regard inner strength as your new clothing<br \/>\nvv. 5:2\u20133<br \/>\n\u2022      Recognize that this life will always have loss and grief<br \/>\nv. 5:4<br \/>\n\u2022      Know that aging is part of God\u2019s plan for your life<br \/>\nv. 5:5<br \/>\n\u2022      Depend on God\u2019s gift of the Holy Spirit in you as your source of strength<br \/>\nv. 5:5<br \/>\n\u2022      View life through the eyes of faith<br \/>\nv. 5:7<br \/>\n\u2022      Look forward to your eternal home with the Lord<br \/>\nv. 5:8<br \/>\n\u2022      Make it your goal to please God<br \/>\nv. 5:9<br \/>\n\u2022      Remember, you will appear before the judgment seat of Christ<br \/>\nv. 5:10<\/p>\n<p>C.      Aging Gracefully<\/p>\n<p>LET ME GROW LOVELY<br \/>\nLet me grow lovely growing old\u2014<br \/>\nSo many fine things do:<br \/>\nLaces, and ivory and gold,<br \/>\nAnd silks need not be new;<br \/>\nAnd there is healing in old tress<br \/>\nOld streets a glamour hold:<br \/>\nWhy not I, as well as these<br \/>\nGrow lovely, growing old?<br \/>\n\u2014Karle Wilson Baker<\/p>\n<p>Accentuate the Positive<\/p>\n<p>Your feelings are determined by the way you think. As you begin to guard the thoughts that come into your mind, your own attitudes concerning your circumstances will begin to change. God\u2019s wonderful prescription for attitude control is Philippians 4:8.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable\u2014if anything is excellent or praiseworthy\u2014think about such things.\u201d (Philippians 4:8)<\/p>\n<p>Get on the Highway to Health<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld habits die hard,\u201d but good health often depends on developing new habits that reduce the possibility of heart trouble, stroke, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis and other diseases associated with aging.<br \/>\n\u2022      Sleep seven to eight hours at night.<br \/>\n\u2022      Maintain a well-balanced diet.<br \/>\n\u2022      Maintain appropriate weight.<br \/>\n\u2022      Get routine, medical checkups.<br \/>\n\u2022      Eat a healthy, high-fiber breakfast.<br \/>\n\u2022      Avoid in-between-meal snacks.<br \/>\n\u2022      Exercise regularly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.\u201d (3 John 2)<\/p>\n<p>Initiate Involvement<\/p>\n<p>God\u2019s purpose is for you to be involved in the lives of others \u2026 and the world around you is full of many who are starved for someone who sincerely cares. Change your focus from your difficulties to being attentive to the needs of others. Genuine love is communicated by the indwelling Holy Spirit, who draws others to Christ.<br \/>\n\u2022      Visit the homebound or shut-ins.<br \/>\n\u2022      Learn to listen with care and compassion.<br \/>\n\u2022      Be available to others with time and assistance.<br \/>\n\u2022      Communicate by talking and listening.<br \/>\n\u2022      Ask questions that draw others out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever sows generously will also reap generously.\u201d (2 Corinthians 9:6)<\/p>\n<p>Notice the Roses<\/p>\n<p>Give yourself permission to \u201cslow down and smell the roses.\u201d Overextending yourself means stress, an unnatural commodity in God\u2019s economy. He wants you to discover the natural balance between \u201cbusyness and boredom.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022      Limit your commitments.<br \/>\n\u2022      Take time to renew lost interests.<br \/>\n\u2022      Learn to relax and play.<br \/>\n\u2022      Gain appreciation for the beauty in nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod is not a God of disorder but of peace.\u201d (1 Corinthians 14:33)<\/p>\n<p>Grow in Grace<\/p>\n<p>God has been extending an invitation for intimacy with Him through all the seasons of your life. His desire is for a loving, personal relationship that is based on your union with His Son Jesus Christ. Growing in grace simply means that you are growing in your awareness of the abiding presence of Christ within you. As you become increasingly aware of His presence, you are decreasingly attached to the things of this world. Loving others becomes easier, and your conflict with the will of God lessens. The losses you face as you move through the aging process become the natural bridge to a deeper relationship with God.<br \/>\n\u2022      Reflect on how God has orchestrated your life.<br \/>\n\u2022      Spend quality time alone with God.<br \/>\n\u2022      Appreciate how God has shown His love throughout your life.<br \/>\n\u2022      Listen to what God is saying to your heart.<br \/>\n\u2022      Meditate on the goodness and greatness of God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever!\u201d (2 Peter 3:18)<\/p>\n<p>D.      Walking in Wisdom<\/p>\n<p>WINTER<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      The Season of Splendor<br \/>\n\u2014      When the beauty and strength of spring is gone, it is sometimes difficult to accept the losses that come with life\u2019s passing seasons. But change is also an opportunity for gain. As you treasure the memories of the past, look for the splendor of life in the present, and live for the glory of Christ in the future.<br \/>\n\u201cThe glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old.\u201d (Proverbs 20:29)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Winter\u2019s Storehouse Holds a Wealth of Wisdom<br \/>\n\u2014      You have a greater understanding of the real values in life.<br \/>\n\u201cHe who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise.\u201d (Proverbs 15:31)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Winter Thrives on Its Deeper Roots<br \/>\n\u2014      You love on a deeper level, and your relationships are more meaningful.<br \/>\n\u201cHe will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.\u201d (Jeremiah 17:8)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Winter Accepts Its Own Barrenness<br \/>\n\u2014      You accept yourself and have more freedom to be yourself.<br \/>\n\u201cThere is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.\u201d (Romans 8:1)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Winter Opens the Door to New Life<br \/>\n\u2014      You are an example to others of how to live a godly life.<br \/>\n\u201cIn everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.\u201d (Titus 2:7\u20138)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Winter Has No Fear of Death<br \/>\n\u2014      You are more optimistic.<br \/>\n\u201c&nbsp;\u2018For I know the plans I have for you,\u2019 declares the LORD, \u2018plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.\u2019&nbsp;\u201d (Jeremiah 29:11)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Winter Knows It Is Here for Only a Season<br \/>\n\u2014      You loosen your hold on the things of this world.<br \/>\n\u201cOur citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.\u201d (Philippians 3:20)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Winter Hears the Call to Eternal Life<br \/>\n\u2014      You are beginning to rest in the knowledge of your eternal life with Christ.<br \/>\n\u201cMy sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.\u201d (John 10:27\u201328)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022      Winter Rests in Its Hope for the Future<br \/>\n\u2014      You no longer have a fear of death.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?\u201d (1 Corinthians 15:55)<\/p>\n<p>E.      Caring for the Elderly<\/p>\n<p>Questions and Answers<\/p>\n<p>QUESTION: \u201cWhen an elderly loved one is difficult, what can I do to prevent becoming bitter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ANSWER: Practice sincere forgiveness.<br \/>\n\u201cBear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.
