The word Tanakh is an acronym for Torah (Pentateuch), Nevi’im (Prophets), and K’tuvim (Writings), commonly known as the “Old Testament.”
Introduction
Daniel Juster, Th.D.
Our relationship with God is the most important relationship of our life. Through this relationship, the reality of God’s love, life, forgiveness, and power enter our life. As Paul wrote in Philippians 3:8, everything else pales in comparison with knowing God!
But how do we know God? We know God through his son Yeshua (Jesus). As the Scriptures clearly state, “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by whom we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). This verse speaks of the wonderful salvation offered through Yeshua. But it also gives us a clue to the sometimes mysterious process of knowing God. For this passage clearly identifies the person Yeshua with the name Yeshua.
How expressive of Hebrew thought! A name was not just a way of identifying a person; it was a way of revealing their very identity. It is the same with the names of God, only in the Scriptures; God’s identity is expressed not in one name, but in many. Each name of God is like a curtained window. Draw back the curtain and the light will flood in, giving us glimpses of his infinite glory.
An example of this can be found in Exodus 3:13–22. Moses asks God what his “name” is. Was he just asking what he should call God? No—he was asking, “Who are you? Describe yourself.” God’s response tells us this: God doesn’t just say “I’m God.” He explains that he is eternal, he is the God of the Jewish people, a God of compassion who has taken notice of Israel’s captivity and will free them. Moses asked for a name. He was given an expression of God’s essence, his compassion, and his desire to free his people.
In Jewish tradition, the many names of God are ways to express different aspects of God’s presence and activity in the world. Draw back the curtain and now we see not only his glories, but even the darker corners of life are also illumined. We can see that God is at work there, too. For example, one of the traditional names of God is El Rachum (Merciful God). This doesn’t merely tell us something about who God is in himself, but how he feels and acts toward us! Even when God acts in his holiness, we can be assured that his heart is stirred with sympathy and kindness toward us.
As we read through the Bible, we come across new names and attributes of God and—if only we pause and “tarry there awhile”—we will learn something fresh and marvelous about him. But also, as we read the Scriptures, we encounter some of the same names and phrases used to describe God repeatedly. And as we draw back the curtain once again, they are filled with new and deeper meaning.
How often we read a passage such as Psalm 83:19, “You alone, whose name is Adonai, are the Most High over all the earth” without pausing, without taking a few moments to meditate on the wonderful name of God mentioned in the verse (see p. 12). Let the authors help you open that curtain. These windows to God—God’s many names—lie “hidden in plain sight,” scattered thickly throughout God’s word.
You have in your hands a valuable book of scriptural meditations on the names of God. Savor each one. These pages have the dynamic potential to change the way you think about God, the way you pray, and the way you live. His names are wonderful!
About the Tetragrammaton and the Use of the Name Adonai
The authors have chosen not to use, what is perhaps, the most profound name of God, spelled in Hebrew yud-hey-vav-hey, also called the Tetragrammaton. This is considered to be the holiest name of God, reflecting God’s essence in a way that no other name does. Because of its holiness, this name is no longer even pronounced by Jewish people today. We do not even know for sure how it would be pronounced. But the reason that a meditation on the Tetragrammaton does not appear in this book is because it would require a book all to itself, a book that would include meditation after meditation.
The same understanding applies to the name “Adonai,” (normally translated Lord, with small capital letters, but shown in this book as “Lord”). This name only appears in this volume in conjunction with other words, such as “Lord God of the Hebrews” and “The Lord of Victory.”
1
Almighty
The One Who Reigns in Power
God Almighty
High, Exalted One
I Am That I Am
Living God
Holy One of Israel
Head Over All
The Greatness on High
King of Kings
God of Glory
Lord of All the Earth
God Most High
God in Heaven
Lord of Lords
Ruler
Enthroned One
The Lord is One
King of the Nations
True God
Great God
God Almighty
El Shaddai אֵל שַׁדַּי
Genesis 17:1
When Avram [Abram] was 99 years old Adonai appeared to Avram and said to him, “I am El Shaddai [God Almighty].
