This word is translated six different ways in the English Bible: \u201csin,\u201d \u201cfault,\u201d \u201ctrespass,\u201d \u201charm,\u201d \u201cblame,\u201d and \u201coffense.\u201d The basic meaning of <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">chata<\/span> is \u201cmissing the mark.\u201d Missing the mark implies hitting the wrong mark. It means to come short of the goal that God intended for man to reach. Every departure, every sin, is a coming short of the purpose for which man was made; it is a missing of the goal which ought to be reached while hitting the wrong mark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The second Hebrew word is <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">pasha<\/span>, which is translated four different ways in the English Bible: \u201crebellion,\u201d \u201ctransgression,\u201d \u201csin,\u201d and \u201ctrespass.\u201d Its basic meaning is \u201cto revolt\u201d or \u201cto refuse subjection to a rightful authority.\u201d The primary usage, sense, and meaning of this word are found in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Ki12.19\" data-reference=\"1Ki12.19\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Kings 12:19<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Job34.37\" data-reference=\"Job34.37\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Job 34:37<\/a>; and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Is1.2\" data-reference=\"Is1.2\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Isaiah 1:2<\/a>. It represents sin as a wrong doing or a breach of trust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The fourth Hebrew word is <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">avon<\/span>, which is translated four different ways in the English Bible: \u201cperversion,\u201d \u201cwrong,\u201d \u201cmiss,\u201d and \u201ciniquity.\u201d The basic meaning is \u201cto be bent,\u201d \u201cto be crooked,\u201d or \u201cto be out of shape.\u201d It emphasizes the crookedness or distortion of sin. There is a stamp of nothingness and unreality upon every departure from the law of God. It emphasizes sin as being unreal in that it is not in conformity with the law of God. It presents the evil devices of men in their false, hollow, and unreal aspects. Because an idol was viewed by the prophets as a thing of naught, a vain and empty thing, this particular Hebrew word was often connected with the sin of idolatry. By connecting the concept of activity with sin, this particular Hebrew word emphasized the tossing and confusion in which the wicked one lives. It emphasizes the perpetual agitation that the wicked ones, the sinners, cause upon others. This concept is used in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Job3.17\" data-reference=\"Job3.17\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Job 3:17<\/a> and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Is57.20-21\" data-reference=\"Is57.20-21\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Isaiah 57:20\u201321<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The seventh Hebrew word is <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">ra<\/span>, which is translated a total of nineteen different ways in the English Bible: \u201cevil,\u201d \u201ccalamity,\u201d \u201cdistress,\u201d \u201cadversity,\u201d \u201cgrief,\u201d \u201caffliction,\u201d \u201cmisery,\u201d \u201csadness,\u201d \u201csorrow,\u201d \u201ctrouble,\u201d \u201csore,\u201d \u201cnoisome,\u201d \u201churt,\u201d \u201cheavy,\u201d \u201cvex,\u201d \u201cwretchedness,\u201d \u201charm,\u201d \u201cill,\u201d and \u201cmischief.\u201d The basic root meaning of this word is \u201cto break up\u201d or \u201cto ruin.\u201d It binds together into one word both the wicked deed and the consequence of that wicked deed. Because his act is an injury both to himself and to everyone around him, this word often refers specifically to the evil one. For the most part, this particular word implies that which is injurious rather than that which is a moral evil. It emphasizes more the rough exterior aspect of wrongdoing rather than the interior of morality. So this word emphasizes sin as a breach of harmony or the breaking up what is good and desirable in man\u2019s society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The eighth Hebrew word is <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">am<\/span><span class=\"lang-x-tl\">al<\/span>, which is translated six different ways in the English Bible: \u201ctravail,\u201d \u201ctoil,\u201d \u201ctrouble,\u201d \u201cworrisome,\u201d \u201csorrow,\u201d and \u201cpain.\u201d The word <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">amal<\/span> emphasizes the result of sin, which is labor. More specifically, it emphasizes labor in its toilsome aspect. Sin has made life a burden and has turned work into toil and travail. This particular word emphasizes the result of the first sin, the sin of Adam, which was toil in labor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The ninth Hebrew word is <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">aval<\/span>, which is translated six different ways in the English Bible: \u201ciniquity,\u201d \u201cunjust,\u201d \u201cunrighteousness,\u201d \u201cungodly,\u201d \u201cperverse,\u201d and \u201cwicked.\u201d The basic root meaning of <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">aval<\/span> is \u201ca departure from that which is equal and right.\u201d It views and designates sin as the lack of integrity in wrongdoing. This concept is found in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Mal2.6\" data-reference=\"Mal2.6\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Malachi 2:6<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The tenth Hebrew word is <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">avar<\/span>, which is translated for the most part by one English word: \u201ctransgression.\u201d It emphasizes sin as crossing over the boundary of right and entering into the forbidden land of wrong. Transgression requires a specific boundary or border to cross over, and that border is a specific law or commandment of God. Once one has sinned, he has crossed over the boundary of right and entered into the forbidden land of wrong. This concept is found in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Jos6.7\" data-reference=\"Jos6.7\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Joshua 6:7<\/a> and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Jos8.1\" data-reference=\"Jos8.1\" data-datatype=\"bible\">8:1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">And the eleventh Hebrew word is <span class=\"lang-x-tl\">asheim<\/span>, which is translated two ways in the English Bible: \u201cguilt\u201d and \u201ctrespass.\u201d It emphasizes sin that is committed through error, negligence, or ignorance. When this type of sin comes to a person\u2019s knowledge, at that point, he is guilty and should regard himself as having offended. The word \u201ctransgression\u201d emphasizes a specific type of sin: a deliberate act against a known commandment of God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The second English word is \u201ciniquity,\u201d which emphasizes that which is altogether wrong. Some things, by themselves, are neutral; they become wrong only in the way they are used. However, in the case of iniquity, this is something which is altogether wrong; there is no correct or righteous way to use it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The third English word summarizing the biblical usage of sin is \u201cerror.\u201d Sin is an error in the sense that it is a disregard for that which is right. The disobedience spoken of here may be active disobedience such as transgression, or it may be passive disobedience. It is always the result of an unwillingness to be led or guided in the way of truth as revealed by the Word of God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The ninth word is \u201cunbelief,\u201d which emphasizes sin as being a lack of trust and faith in God. Unbelief is a failure to trust God, which is sin. The Scriptures teach that whatsoever is not of faith is sin (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro14.23\" data-reference=\"Ro14.23\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 14:23<\/a>). First, sin is a specific type of evil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Secondly, sin is<span id=\"marker3655418\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4118307\"><\/span> a lack of conformity to or a transgression of the law of God. It is a failure to do what the law demands (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Jas4.17\" data-reference=\"Jas4.17\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Jas. 4:17<\/a>). Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. While it may lessen the degree of punishment, it does not lessen the duration of punishment (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Lk12.47-48\" data-reference=\"Lk12.47-48\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Lk. 12:47\u201348<\/a>). Nor is the feeling of guilt necessary to the fact of sin; sin is present regardless of whether or not one feels guilty. Sin <span id=\"marker3655421\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4118907\"><\/span>is any lack or want of conformity to or a transgression of the law of God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Thirdly, sin is a principle or a nature, as well as an act (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Mt15.19\" data-reference=\"Mt15.19\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Mat. 15:19<\/a>). As an act, si<span id=\"marker3655422\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4119107\"><\/span>n produces guilt; as a principle, sin produces pollution (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Je17.9\" data-reference=\"Je17.9\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Jer. 17:9<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Lk6.45\" data-reference=\"Lk6.45\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Lk. 6:45<\/a>). Because sin is both a nature or principle, as well as an act, it produces a sixfold result. First, the understanding of <span id=\"marker3655423\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4119307\"><\/span>man is darkened (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro1.31\" data-reference=\"Ro1.31\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 1:31<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co2.14\" data-reference=\"1Co2.14\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Cor. 2:14<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Eph4.18\" data-reference=\"Eph4.18\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Eph. 4:18<\/a>). Secondly, it produces an evil and vain imagination (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ge6.5\" data-reference=\"Ge6.5\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Gen. 6:5<\/a>, <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ge6.12\" data-reference=\"Ge6.12\" data-datatype=\"bible\">12<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro1.21\" data-reference=\"Ro1.21\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 1:21<\/a>). Thirdly, it produces vile affections or passions (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro1.26-27\" data-reference=\"Ro1.26-27\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 1:26\u201327<\/a>). Four<span id=\"marker3655424\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4119507\"><\/span>thly, it produces corrupt speech (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Eph4.29\" data-reference=\"Eph4.29\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Eph. 4:29<\/a>). Fifth, it produces a defiled mind and conscience (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Tt1.15\" data-reference=\"Tt1.15\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Titus 1:15<\/a>). And sixth, it produces an enslaved and depraved will (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro7.18-19\" data-reference=\"Ro7.18-19\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 7:18\u201319<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The fourth essential n<span id=\"marker3655425\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4119707\"><\/span>ature of sin is that of selfishness because, ultimately, sin emphasizes the sinner himself as being primary as over against the primacy of God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The fifth thing about the essential nature of sin is tha<span id=\"marker3655426\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4119907\"><\/span>t sin is also lawlessness (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn3.4\" data-reference=\"1Jn3.4\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Jn. 3:4<\/a>). First, man is subject to death in all of its forms: physical death, spiritual death, and eternal death. Secondly, it means that man is born in a state of depravity; he is born spiritually dead. Thirdly, man is guilty of personal sin. Fourthly, man is in a state of being under sin. He is in a system in which sin holds dominion over every person. By divine decree, all Jews and Gentiles are now placed into that estate in which human merit is worthless insofar as salvation is concerned. The Meaning of Original Sin<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">What is the meaning of original sin? Actually, the term \u201coriginal sin\u201d has two different meanings and can be used in two ways. Sometimes the term \u201coriginal sin\u201d refers t<span id=\"marker3658913\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4126790\"><\/span>o the first sin committed by a human being, Adam; this is emphasized in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro5.19\" data-reference=\"Ro5.19\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Romans 5:19<\/a>. In this sense, original sin means that Adam\u2019s sin brought original guilt and original pollution. This original poll<span id=\"marker3658914\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4126990\"><\/span>ution caused total depravity and inability so that even man\u2019s best works are still radically defective. The term \u201coriginal sin\u201d can refer to Adam\u2019s sin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The second and more common usage of the term \u201co<span id=\"marker3658915\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4127190\"><\/span>riginal sin\u201d refers to the sin nature for two reasons. First, the sin nature is called original sin because it originated with Adam and flows from the first parents, Adam and Eve, so that everyone inherits this sin nature. Secondly, the sin nature<span id=\"marker3658916\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4127390\"><\/span> is sometimes called original sin because it is the origin of all other sins, therefore, all people commit acts of sin due to their sin nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">A good de<span id=\"marker3658917\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4127590\"><\/span>finition of the sin nature is: \u201cThe sin nature is the capacity to do all things, either good or bad, that in no way commend a person to God.\u201d This means that every person enters the human race as a sinner and <span id=\"marker3658918\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4127790\"><\/span>commits acts of sin because he is a sinner. Adam and Eve are the only two people who ever became sinners by sinning. All their descendants sin because they are sinners. Only Adam and Eve died spiritually by sinning; their descendants are born spiritually dead. Rather, it comes from Adam, through all of his descendants, through our parents, to us. The Penalty for the Sin Nature<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The penalty for the sin nature and original sin involves two things. The first penalty is total depravity. By way of definition, total depravity does not mean that ev<span id=\"marker3660104\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4129844\"><\/span>ery man is as bad as he can be. Rather, total depravity means \u201cthe unmeritorious state of man before God.\u201d None of man\u2019s works carries any merit before God. The second penalty for the sin nature is spiritual death. First, there is a corruption of the very nature of the soul in that the soul is rendered spiritually dead. The second result is that there is the loss of original righteousness. When Adam and Eve were created, they had original righteousness, but they lost i<span id=\"marker3660107\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4130444\"><\/span>t when they sinned. Now, the inclination of man is toward evil. The third result is that it is the nature of sin to include guilt and corruption. Guilt refers to the outward aspect of sin; corruption refers to the inward aspect of sin. The Remedy for the Sin Nature<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The remedy for the sin nature involves three things, with each remedy carrying its own result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">First, the remedy for the sin nature involves regeneration. Regeneration<span id=\"marker3648932\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4131067\"><\/span>, which means \u201cto be born again,\u201d renders the dead spirit alive. The dead spirit, with which man is born, is quickened at the moment of belief. The result of regeneration is that the believer becomes spiritually alive.<span id=\"marker3648933\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4131267\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Secondly, the remedy for the sin nature involves redemption. Redemption brings with it a new nature or a new capacity to serve God with righteousness. Although the believer still re<span id=\"marker3648934\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4131467\"><\/span>tains his sin nature, as a result of redemption, the believer receives a new nature. Thus he has a new capacity to serve God with righteousness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">And thirdly, the remedy for the sin nature involves the<span id=\"marker3648935\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4131667\"><\/span> indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, who now provides power for victory over the judged sin nature. The result is that the believer can gain victory over the sin nature by the power of the Holy Spirit.<span id=\"marker3648936\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4131867\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">When one believes on the Lord Yeshua the Messiah, he is regenerated, redeemed, and he is indwelled by the Holy Spirit. For example, as related to divine requirements, personal sins could be those of commission or omission. As related to object, personal sins could be directed against God, against a neighbor, or against oneself. As related to compass or direction, personal sins could be inward of the soul or outward of body. As related to chargeableness, personal sin could be chargeable to oneself alone or to others as partakers. As related to intention, personal sin could be voluntary or involuntary; that is, done out of ignorance or committed because of passion. As related to sinfulness, personal sins could come in greater and lesser degree, because the Bible does teach the concept of lesser and greater sins. The Concept Taught in Scripture<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The one key passage that teaches the concept of imputed sin is <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro5.12-21\" data-reference=\"Ro5.12-21\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Romans 5:12\u201321<\/a>. The key verse in this passage is verse <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro5.12\" data-reference=\"Ro5.12\" data-datatype=\"bible\">12<\/a>: <em>Therefore, as through one man sin entered i<\/em><span id=\"marker3652760\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4139451\"><\/span><em>nto the world, and death through sin; and so death passed unto all men, for that all sinned.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">In the way it is phrased, the all who sinned are in connection with Adam\u2019s sin. The Transmission of Imputed Sin<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Besides the concept of the power of attorney, another way to explain how imputed sin is transmitted is by the theological term \u201cNatural Headship.\u201d Natural Headship m<span id=\"marker3661664\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4140125\"><\/span>eans that imputed sin is transmitted immediately from Adam to the individual. The sin nature was transmitted by mediate transmission in that it went from Adam, through the parents, to the individual. Imputed sin, however, is by means of immediate transmission in that it goes from Adam directly <span id=\"marker3661665\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4140325\"><\/span>to each individual of the human race, not through the parents. As far as transmission of imputed sin is c<span id=\"marker3661666\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4140525\"><\/span>oncerned, it is transmitted from Adam to the individual by immediate transmission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">By virtue of the organic unity of the human race in Adam, the sin of Adam is imputed immediately to all of his descen<span id=\"marker3661667\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4140725\"><\/span>dants. In Scripture, this concept known as \u201cseminal relationship.\u201d One example of seminal relationship is in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Heb7.9-10\" data-reference=\"Heb7.9-10\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Hebrews 7:9\u201310<\/a>: <em>And, so to say, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, has paid ti<\/em><span id=\"marker3661668\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4140925\"><\/span><em>thes; for he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchizedek met him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The background to this passage is <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ge14\" data-reference=\"Ge14\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Genesis 14<\/a>, where Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek. The author of the Book of Hebrews poi<span id=\"marker3661669\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4141125\"><\/span>nts out that when Abraham paid tithes, Levi, who was a descendant of Abraham, was also viewed as having paid tithes to Melchizedek by means of imputation through a seminal relationship. Levi wasn\u2019t even born when that event occurred. Nevertheless, because he was in the loins of hi<span id=\"marker3661670\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4141325\"><\/span>s father, Abraham, Levi was viewed as having paid tithes to Melchizedek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The entire human race was \u201cin the loins of Ada<span id=\"marker3661671\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4141525\"><\/span>m.\u201d Because of that seminal relationship, when Adam sinned, all humanity is viewed as having participated in the sin. The Remedy for Imputed Sin<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The remedy for imputed sin is that third great imputation mentioned earlier: the imputed righteousness of the Messiah. This is taught in the same context as imputed sin. <span id=\"marker3651454\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4142612\"><\/span>In the context of <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro5.12-21\" data-reference=\"Ro5.12-21\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Romans 5:12\u201321<\/a>, verse <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro5.21\" data-reference=\"Ro5.21\" data-datatype=\"bible\">21<\/a> states: <em>that, as sin reigned in death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Another passage that <span id=\"marker3651455\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4142812\"><\/span>teaches that the remedy for imputed sin is the imputed righteousness of the Messiah is <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/2Co5.21\" data-reference=\"2Co5.21\" data-datatype=\"bible\">2 Corinthians 5:21<\/a>. The verse begins with the words: <em>Him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf.<\/em> This is<span id=\"marker3651456\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4143012\"><\/span> dealing with the second great imputation: the imputation of the sin of man upon the Messiah. In that sense, it is similar to personal sin committed by unbelievers. The Concept Taught in Scripture<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The fact that believers still commit acts of sin is clearly taught by Scripture. In <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Ti1.15\" data-reference=\"1Ti1.15\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Timothy 1:15<\/a>, Paul told Timothy that he, Paul, is the chief of sinners. Paul wa<span id=\"marker3652381\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4144164\"><\/span>s an apostle, and he perhaps reached the epitome of spirituality that is attainable by man in this life. Yet he did not use the past tense when writing the letter to Timothy toward the end of his life. He did not say, \u201cI was\u201d or \u201cI used to be\u201d the chief of sinners. R<span id=\"marker3652382\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4144364\"><\/span>egarding sinners, Paul used the present tense: I am chief. He still considered himself as being a sinner by nature and saw himself as committing acts of sin.<span id=\"marker3652383\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4144564\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">A key passage that speaks about sin in the believer\u2019s life is <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn1.8-10\" data-reference=\"1Jn1.8-10\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 John 1:8\u201310<\/a>: <em>If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our<\/em><span id=\"marker3652384\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4144764\"><\/span><em> sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The Book of 1 <span id=\"marker3652385\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4144964\"><\/span>John was written to believers and speaks about believers. In verse <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn1.8\" data-reference=\"1Jn1.8\" data-datatype=\"bible\">8<\/a>, John pointed out the fact that believers still have the sin nature. In verse <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn1.9\" data-reference=\"1Jn1.9\" data-datatype=\"bible\">9<\/a>, he mentioned that believers commit particular sins<span id=\"marker3652386\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4145164\"><\/span> that need to be confessed. In verse <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn1.10\" data-reference=\"1Jn1.10\" data-datatype=\"bible\">10<\/a>, he mentioned the fact of personal sins: If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. By using the pronoun we, John include<span id=\"marker3652387\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4145364\"><\/span>s himself in this statement. The Relationship to Other Categories of Sin<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">What is the relationship of sin in the believer\u2019s life to man\u2019s estate under sin, to the sin nature, to personal sin, and to imputed sin?<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">In relationship to man\u2019s estate under sin, the believer is no longer living in the estate under sin; rather, the believer is now in the new estate of being \u201cunder grace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">In relationship to the sin nature, the believer still has his sin nature. Just as the sin nature is the source of personal sins committed by unbelievers, even so the sin nature is the source of personal sins committed by the believer. The difference between the believer and the unbeliever is not that one has a sin nature and one does not. The difference is that the believer also has a new nature. He has his newborn human spirit, which wars against the old sin nature. This war is described in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ga5.16-17\" data-reference=\"Ga5.16-17\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Galatians 5:16\u201317<\/a> and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro7.15-25\" data-reference=\"Ro7.15-25\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Romans 7:15\u201325<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">In relationship to personal sin, three things should be noted. First, the believer has been saved from the power of sin. Whereas the unbeliever is a slave to sin, he has to commit acts of sin; the believer has been saved from the power of sin; he does not have to commit acts of sin (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro6.1-8.13\" data-reference=\"Ro6.1-8.13\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 6:1\u20138:13<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn1.1-2.2\" data-reference=\"1Jn1.1-2.2\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Jn. 1:1\u20132:2<\/a>). Secondly, the believer is to reckon this fact as being true and live like it (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro6.1-8.13\" data-reference=\"Ro6.1-8.13\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 6:1\u20138:13<\/a>). Thirdly, the believer must now fight the spiritual warfare against the flesh, the devil, and the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">In relationship to imputed sin, the believer\u2019s position of being \u201cin Adam\u201d is counteracted by his new position of being in Christ. For the believer, physical death is no longer the penalty for imputed sin. Physical death is merely a means of leaving this world and entering into Heaven. The Penalty for Sin in the Believer\u2019s Life<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">There are four possible penalties for sin in the believer\u2019s life. The first penalty is the loss of fellowship with God (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn1.6\" data-reference=\"1Jn1.6\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Jn. 1:6<\/a>). As part of God\u2019s famil<span id=\"marker3654797\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4147481\"><\/span>y, when the believer commits sin, he breaks the fellowship he has with God. This fellowship must be restored by means of confession (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn1.9\" data-reference=\"1Jn1.9\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Jn. 1:9<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">A second penalty for sin in the believer\u2019s life is chas<span id=\"marker3654798\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4147681\"><\/span>tisement. This will occur if he does not confess his sins. If he does not confess his sins to receive family forgiveness for them, God will chasten and discipline him (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co11.32\" data-reference=\"1Co11.32\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Cor. 11:32<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Heb12.4-11\" data-reference=\"Heb12.4-11\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Heb. 12:4\u201311<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">A t<span id=\"marker3654799\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4147881\"><\/span>hird possible penalty for sin in the believer\u2019s life is excommunication from the local church. This is especially true for personal sins that are of the most gross type, the kind of personal sins that ar<span id=\"marker3654800\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4148081\"><\/span>e public and bring dishonor to the local church. One example of this is found in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co5.1-5\" data-reference=\"1Co5.1-5\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Corinthians 5:1\u20135<\/a>, where the public sin was that of a member who was sleeping with his stepmother. This was happen<span id=\"marker3654801\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4148281\"><\/span>ing with the church\u2019s knowledge, but the church was not exercising church discipline. It is this kind of public sin that brings shame upon a local congregation and could result in excommunication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">A f<span id=\"marker3654802\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4148481\"><\/span>ourth possible penalty for sin in the believer\u2019s life is physical death. This is a natural consequence of chastisement and excommunication if it is taken to its full extent. Earlier, it was mentioned tha<span id=\"marker3654803\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4148681\"><\/span>t physical death is no longer a penalty for the believer, but merely a means of leaving this world in order to enter into Heaven. However, there is one exception to this rule. If a believer refuses to confess his sin after suffering a period of chastisement, the final form of chastisement could be physical death. Furthermore, if a person does not respond and repent, the natural result of excommunicat<span id=\"marker3654804\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4148881\"><\/span>ion is physical death inflicted upon the believer by Satan, not by the congregation. Physical death as a penalty for a believer\u2019s sins is mentioned in <span id=\"marker3654805\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4149081\"><\/span><a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co5.5\" data-reference=\"1Co5.5\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Corinthians 5:5<\/a> and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co11.28-32\" data-reference=\"1Co11.28-32\" data-datatype=\"bible\">11:28\u201332<\/a>. The Remedy for Sin in the Believer\u2019s Life<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The remedy for sin in the believer\u2019s life has two aspects: preventative remedies and applied remedies. Regarding preventative remedies, these are to keep t<span id=\"marker3663709\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4149516\"><\/span>he believer from committing acts of sin. There are four such preventative remedies. The first such remedy is meditating upon the Scriptures (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ps119.11\" data-reference=\"Ps119.11\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Ps. 119:11<\/a>). The second preventative remedy is the interces<span id=\"marker3663710\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4149716\"><\/span>sory work of the Messiah (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Jn17.15\" data-reference=\"Jn17.15\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Jn. 17:15<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro8.34\" data-reference=\"Ro8.34\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 8:34<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Heb7.25\" data-reference=\"Heb7.25\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Heb. 7:25<\/a>). The third preventative remedy is the indwelling ministry of the Holy Spirit by which the believer has the power to resist sin (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Jn7.37-39\" data-reference=\"Jn7.37-39\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Jn. 7:37\u201339<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro8.9\" data-reference=\"Ro8.9\" data-datatype=\"bible\"><span id=\"marker3663711\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4149916\"><\/span>Rom. 8:9<\/a>). And the fourth preventative remedy is walking in the light of the Word of God (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn1.7\" data-reference=\"1Jn1.7\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Jn 1:7<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Regarding applied remedies, one remedy to apply after one has sinned is self examination (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co11.31-32\" data-reference=\"1Co11.31-32\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Cor. 11<span id=\"marker3663712\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4150116\"><\/span>:31\u201332<\/a>); the believer is to examine himself to see if there is sin in his life. If there is, then the second remedy to apply is confession (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Jn1.9\" data-reference=\"1Jn1.9\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Jn. 1:9<\/a>); he is to confess his sins; he is to agree with G<span id=\"marker3663713\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4150316\"><\/span>od that it is sin; and he is to make an admission of participation. Ideally, this should be done whenever one becomes aware of his sins. The Final Triumph Over All Sin<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The tenth division deals with the final triumph over all sin. The Bible teaches that the day will come when believers will have final victory over all sin. That day will come with the resurrection of the body (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co15.35-49\" data-reference=\"1Co15.35-49\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Cor. 15:35\u201349<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro8.23\" data-reference=\"Ro8.23\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 8:23<\/a>). The resurrection of the body means redemption from the body of sin because, when the body is resurrected, it will be free of the sin nature. For the Church saints, this will occur at the Rapture, some time before the Tribulation. For the Old Testaments saints and the Tribulation saints, this will occur during the Seventy-five Day Interval between the end of the Tribulation and the start of the Messianic Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">When the Bible portrays the final abode of all believers of all ages, it describes them as being totally free of sin. This final abode, in which all believers will have final victory over all sin, is found in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Heb12.2-24\" data-reference=\"Heb12.2-24\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Hebrews 12:2\u201324<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/2Pe3.7-13\" data-reference=\"2Pe3.7-13\" data-datatype=\"bible\">2 Peter 3:7\u201313<\/a>; and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Re20.7-22.5\" data-reference=\"Re20.7-22.5\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Revelation 20:7\u201322:5<\/a>. When all believers live together in the New Jerusalem upon the new earth, they will have final triumph over all sin. The Church saints will have final triumph over sin even in the Kingdom. However, there will be those in the Kingdom with natural bodies and a sin nature. The Usages of the Word<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">In Scripture, there are six usages of the word \u201claw.\u201d First, the word \u201claw\u201d is sometimes used to refer to the Mosaic Law. In fact, the majority of times that the Bible uses t<span id=\"marker3653013\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4152558\"><\/span>he term it is a reference to the Law of Moses. Two examples of this usage are: <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro6.14-15\" data-reference=\"Ro6.14-15\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Romans 6:14\u201315<\/a> and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ga4.4\" data-reference=\"Ga4.4\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Galatians 4:4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">A second usage is the term \u201celemental law\u201d or \u201cmoral law.\u201d This is not a specific comma<span id=\"marker3653014\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4152758\"><\/span>ndment of Moses as such, but merely the moral law, basic law, or elemental law found in society. Two examples of this usage are: <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro4.15\" data-reference=\"Ro4.15\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Romans 4:15<\/a> and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro5.13\" data-reference=\"Ro5.13\" data-datatype=\"bible\">5:13<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">A third usage of the term is \u201ccivil law.\u201d This us<span id=\"marker3653015\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4152958\"><\/span>age is found in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Da6.8\" data-reference=\"Da6.8\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Daniel 6:8<\/a> and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Da6.12\" data-reference=\"Da6.12\" data-datatype=\"bible\">12<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">A fourth usage of the word \u201claw\u201d is the revealed will of God; such as, <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ps119.18\" data-reference=\"Ps119.18\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Psalm 119:18<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">A fifth usage of the word \u201claw\u201d in Scripture is as a principle of operation; thi<span id=\"marker3653016\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4153158\"><\/span>s is found in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro7.21\" data-reference=\"Ro7.21\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Romans 7:21<\/a> and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro8.2\" data-reference=\"Ro8.2\" data-datatype=\"bible\">8:2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">And a sixth way the word \u201claw\u201d is used is the Law of the Messiah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Like the Law of Moses, the Law of the Messiah contains a body of specific commandments; such as in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co9.21\" data-reference=\"1Co9.21\" data-datatype=\"bible\"><span id=\"marker3653017\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4153358\"><\/span>1 Corinthians 9:21<\/a> and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ga6.2\" data-reference=\"Ga6.2\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Galatians 6:2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">In the New Testament, the word \u201claw\u201d is found a total of two hundred nine times, most of these are found in two books: Romans and Galatians. In the Book of Romans<span id=\"marker3653018\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4153558\"><\/span>, the word is used seventy seven times; in the Book of Galatians, it is used thirty times. The Meaning of Law<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The discovery of these various usages of the word \u201claw\u201d in the Scriptures leads to a discussion on the meaning of law. Perhaps the best and simplest way of defining the term \u201claw<span id=\"marker3653697\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4154845\"><\/span>\u201d as used in Scripture is: \u201cLaw is the expression of the divine will, enforced by power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">That simple meaning of law carries four implications. The first implication is that there is a Lawgiver. That <span id=\"marker3653698\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4155045\"><\/span>Lawgiver is God. The second implication is that there is a subject who receives the law and must obey it. Man is the subject and he must obey any law given by the Lawgiver as applicable to him. The third implication is that this law is an expression of the divine will. Because the Lawgiver is God Himself, wha<span id=\"marker3653699\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4155245\"><\/span>t He hands down as law is the expression of His divine will. The fourth implication is that He is able to enforce His will; He has the power to enforce His will and may use His power whenever He deems necessary.<span id=\"marker3653700\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4155445\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Having defined the meaning of law and its implications, it must be pointed out<span id=\"marker3653701\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4155645\"><\/span> that there are two extremes concerning law. One extreme is called Antinomianism, which teaches that believers are not subject to any law at all. Most Antinomians use verses that teach that the believer is no longer subject to the Law of Moses, which is true. However, believers<span id=\"marker3653702\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4155845\"><\/span> are still subject to a law, and that is the Law of the Messiah. The second extreme is Legalism. Legalism is adding man made laws to the laws that God has given and making these man made laws mandatory as well. Both Antinomianism and Legalism are wrong. Elemental Law<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The first major type or category of law is elemental law. Elemental law means law that is wrought into the elements, substances, and forces of rational and irrational creatures. When <span id=\"marker3656002\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4156493\"><\/span>elemental law is wrought into the constitution of the material universe, these elemental laws become physical or natural laws; such as, the law of gravity, the three laws of thermodynamics, and others.<span id=\"marker3656003\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4156693\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Elemental law that is wrought into the constitution of rational and free beings becomes moral law. All humanity has some sense of morality. Even in the darkest, deepest jungles, people who have neve<span id=\"marker3656004\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4156893\"><\/span>r been exposed to the divine law of God or Scripture still have some type of moral code. They still follow a concept of what is right and what is wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">There are some other aspects of elemental law. <span id=\"marker3656005\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4157093\"><\/span>Elemental law is not arbitrary; it springs from nature itself. Elemental law is not temporary; it exists as long as the elements themselves exist, whether they are rational or irrational. Elemental laws can be both negative and positive, demanding<span id=\"marker3656006\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4157293\"><\/span> conformity to God. Even the pagan has a sense of right and wrong, and he knows when he has not met a certain standard. Elemental law is universal; everywhere man acts as if there were a moral standard. Positive Enactments<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The second type of law is positive enactments. Positive enactments are the expression of God\u2019s will in published, written ordinance. This is what is contained in Scripture. There are different expressions of God\u2019s will for different ages or dispensations. Nevertheless, every age has a published ordinance from God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Positive enactments are precepts expressed in three major categories. First, there are moral precepts; such as, the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. Secondly, there are ceremonial precepts; such as, the sacrificial system of the Law of Moses and the Communion Service of the Law of the Messiah. The Purpose of the Law of God<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Five things should be noted in dealing with the purpose of the law of God. First, the law of God was not a means of salvation. God never gave commandments as a way of <span id=\"marker3665516\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4158715\"><\/span>earning salvation. The purpose of the law of God, regardless of which law or which dispensation, was never to be a means of salvation (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro3.20\" data-reference=\"Ro3.20\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 3:20<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro8.3\" data-reference=\"Ro8.3\" data-datatype=\"bible\">8:3<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ga3.21\" data-reference=\"Ga3.21\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Gal. 3:21<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Secondly, the purpose of the law of G<span id=\"marker3665517\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4158915\"><\/span>od was to intensify man\u2019s knowledge of sin (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro3.19-20\" data-reference=\"Ro3.19-20\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 3:19\u201320<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro5.13\" data-reference=\"Ro5.13\" data-datatype=\"bible\">5:13<\/a>, <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro5.20\" data-reference=\"Ro5.20\" data-datatype=\"bible\">20<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro7.7\" data-reference=\"Ro7.7\" data-datatype=\"bible\">7:7<\/a>, <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro7.13\" data-reference=\"Ro7.13\" data-datatype=\"bible\">13<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co15.56\" data-reference=\"1Co15.56\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Cor. 15:56<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ga3.19\" data-reference=\"Ga3.19\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Gal. 3:19<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Thirdly, the purpose of the law of God was to reveal the holiness of God (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro7.12\" data-reference=\"Ro7.12\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Rom. 7:12<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Fourthly, w<span id=\"marker3665518\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4159115\"><\/span>hile the purpose of the law of God was not a means of salvation, it was to lead man to the means of salvation, which is saving faith (<a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ga3.24\" data-reference=\"Ga3.24\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Gal. 3:24<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The fifth purpose of the law of God is to provide the <span id=\"marker3665519\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4159315\"><\/span>rule of life for the believer. Once a person is saved, some of the questions he might ask are: \u201cHow then shall I live?\u201d \u201cWhat does God expect of the believer?\u201d In other words, \u201cWhat kind of lifestyle does God want him to conduct?\u201d For the believer in the<span id=\"marker3665520\" class=\"offset-marker\" data-offset=\"4159515\"><\/span> Old Testament, the rule of life was the Law of Moses. For the believer now, the rule of life is the Law of the Messiah. But regardless of which law it was, the law of the Adamic Covenant, the law of the Abrahamic Covenant, the law of the Mosaic Covenant, the Law of the Messiah in the New Covenant, or the future law of the Millennial System, the law of God was never given to attain salvation. The Believer and the Law of God<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">Concerning the believer and the law of God, two simple points should be made. Simple as they are, people are very much confused about these things today and often do not know which law to follow. Sometimes they disobey commandments applicable to them and obey commandments which are not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The first point is that the believer today is not under the Law of Moses. Gentiles were never under the Law of Moses; the Law of Moses was given only to the Jews. This means that not a single one of the 613 commandments is applicable to the believer today. This is taught in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro6.14-15\" data-reference=\"Ro6.14-15\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Romans 6:14\u201315<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro7.6\" data-reference=\"Ro7.6\" data-datatype=\"bible\">7:6<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ga5.18\" data-reference=\"Ga5.18\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Galatians 5:18<\/a>; and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Heb7.18-19\" data-reference=\"Heb7.18-19\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Hebrews 7:18\u201319<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The second point concerning the believer and the law of God is that the believer today is under the Law of the Messiah. Just as the Law of Moses contained many commandments, the Law of the Messiah also contains many commandments. Many of the commandments in the Law of the Messiah are the same as those found in the Law of Moses, but many others are different. This is why one should clearly understand that the believer is not under the Law of Moses today; he has no obligation to obey any of the 613 commandments of the Law of Moses. However, the believer today has every obligation to obey all of the commandments of the Law of the Messiah. This is taught in <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ro8.4\" data-reference=\"Ro8.4\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Romans 8:4<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/1Co9.21\" data-reference=\"1Co9.21\" data-datatype=\"bible\">1 Corinthians 9:21<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ga5.18\" data-reference=\"Ga5.18\" data-datatype=\"bible\">Galatians 5:18<\/a>; and <a class=\"bibleref\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/reference\/Ga6.2\" data-reference=\"Ga6.2\" data-datatype=\"bible\">6:2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lang-en\">The believer today must be careful not to be so zealous in obeying laws that do not apply to him that he ends up living in a state of disobedience to the laws and commandments which do apply to him.
