In the first stage, the armies of the Antichrist, the Gentile nations, will gather in the Valley of Jezreel in Galilee. In the second stage, the capital of the Antichrist, Babylon, will be destroyed by the enemies of the Antichrist. In the third stage, all the armies will come against Jerusalem to attack it and will succeed in taking Jerusalem, as will be seen later in the Book of Zechariah. The Prophet Zechariah is particularly concerned with the third stage of the Campaign of Armageddon. In the fourth stage, the armies of the Antichrist will come against the Jewish Remnant living in Bozrah, a city in Edom better known today by its Greek name, Petra. The Attack on Jerusalem—Zechariah 12:2–3

As He described the nations coming against Jerusalem, God made two statements about Jerusalem. In the majority of cases when the word cup is used symbolically in the Old Testament, it is a symbol of divine judgment (Ps. 75:8; Is. 51:17, 21–23; Jer. 25:15–16; 51:7). As these Gentile nations come against Jerusalem, they will begin to drink from this vast cup, hoping to derive pleasure from it; but after drinking, they will run away reeling and staggering, no longer in control as they thought they would be. Notice the distinction Zechariah makes between the Jews of Judah and the Jews of Jerusalem. Not only will the Jews in Jerusalem suffer in this siege against Jerusalem, Judah will also suffer. By this time, the majority of the people of Judah will no longer be in Jerusalem; they will have been scattered out of the Land to Bozrah. Jerusalem is pictured here as a very heavy stone, not one that is smooth, but rather, one that has many jagged, sharp-pointed edges. Those who burden themselves with it shall be sore wounded or lacerated. Those who try to lift this heavy stone with their hands will be able to lift it just a little bit; but as they do so, it will be so heavy that it will begin to slip through their hands, cutting their hands to shreds.

Verse 3 ends with this statement: all the nations of the earth shall be gathered together against it. The Campaign of Armageddon will not be one group of nations fighting a second group of nations. There are two groups upon whom the Spirit will fall: the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. When the Holy Spirit is poured out upon all of Israel, Israel as a nation will be spiritually regenerated and saved.

The result of their spiritual salvation is given in verse 10b: and they shall look unto me whom they have pierced.

They will begin to mourn for the Messiah to return so that He can rescue them physically as was predicted in chapter 12:2–9. The Hebrew word translated pierced is a strong word that means, “to be thrust through.” This is a reference to the spear that pierced the Messiah’s side (Jn. 19:37). So the time is coming, after Israel is saved and the Spirit has been poured out upon the nation, that they will begin to look unto the One they have thrust through. The King James Version erroneously translated this to read: they shall look upon me whom they have pierced. Because of the mistranslation of the Hebrew word al as upon, many have interpreted this to mean that Yeshua (Jesus) will come first; once the Jews have seen Yeshua, then will they be saved. However, the Hebrew word used here does not mean upon but unto because of where His is: “aloft” or “on high.” When believers look unto the Lord, they do not visibly see the Lord. Israel’s national salvation is the prerequisite to the Second Coming.

Furthermore, the intensity of their mourning is emphasized in verse 10c: and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born.

In the world of that day, there was greater mourning for the loss of a first-born son than for the loss of any other child. The mourning for the Messiah is not only a mourning for the loss, but also a mourning that this Son might come back and be restored to life. Another distinguishing mark of a prophet was the wearing of a hairy mantle (1 Kg. 19:13; 2 Kg. 1:8; 2:8, 13; Mat. 3:4; Mk. 1:6). The purpose of false prophets’ wearing a hairy mantle was to deceive. When someone is suspected of being a false prophet but is no longer wearing a hairy mantle, he will say, “I was never a prophet and never claimed to be one; I have always been a tiller of the ground, a farmer, from the time I was a boy.”

While they can remove the hairy mantle, there are certain marks of a false prophet that they will not be able to remove. Then a question will be raised in verse 6: And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds between your arms? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

It was a practice of false prophets, not only to imitate a true prophet by wearing a hairy mantle, but also to mark their bodies and cause scars. This is something true prophets never did. For example, in the contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal, the prophets of Baal cut themselves (1 Kg. 18:28). So while the false prophets will be able to cast away the hairy mantles, they will not be able to remove the scars from their bodies. They will try to say that these are wounds that they received while partying in the house of friends, but such deceit will not succeed in deterring the searchers; these prophets will lose their lives anyway. Sometimes this verse has been pulled out of context and been made to refer to the Messiah. But remember, “A text apart from its context is a pretext.” Verse 6 is part of the context on the subject of false prophets that began with verse 2. The Rejection at His First Coming—Zechariah 13:7a

Awake, O sword against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, says Jehovah of hosts.

The first thing to notice is the nature of the Messiah: He is both God and man. Zechariah begins by stating: Awake, O sword. The word sword is a symbol of death, not the manner of execution, pointing out that the Messiah will be killed by violent means. The sword is to awake against my shepherd. By calling Him my shepherd, God is emphasizing the humanity of the Messiah. But then the verse states: against the man that is my fellow. By calling Him the man, Messiah’s humanity is again emphasized. Next, He is called my fellow. But the word fellow is not a good translation of the Hebrew word amiti, which literally means “my equal” or “my companion.” This emphasizes His deity as Jehovah’s equal. Literally, the passage reads, “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, and against the Man that is My equal.” For this One to be God’s equal means that He must be God Himself. Here is one Old Testament example of the God-Man concept. The One who is going to be killed is the Good Shepherd, but He is also God and Man. So this verse speaks of the rejection of the Messiah at His First Coming and the rejection was by means of a violent death, by means of crucifixion.

B. The Third Stage—Zechariah 14:1–2

Zechariah again deals with the issue of the Gentile armies gathered against Jerusalem and repeats some of the things he said in chapter 12. Concerning these nations, he makes two main points.

First, there is the dividing of the spoil in verse 1: Behold, a day of Jehovah comes, when your spoil shall be divided in the midst of you.

Zechariah introduces the timing in a little different way: Behold, a day of Jehovah comes. Before, it had been the day, but this time, it is a day, referring to one specific part of the Day of Jehovah or the Great Tribulation. It is a day toward the end of the second half of the Great Tribulation, when the third stage of the Campaign of Armageddon takes place. Zechariah makes five statements concerning the taking of the city. First: the city shall be taken; Jerusalem will be captured by the Gentiles. Thirdly: the women ravished; the women will be raped, as often happens in warfare. Fourthly: half of the city shall go forth into captivity; half of the Jewish residents will be enslaved. And fifth: the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city; the rest of the population will be left in the city and will experience the rescue described in the following verses. However, the Gentile armies will suffer tremendous losses according to chapter 12:4–9, for God will supernaturally energize the Jewish forces. It should be carefully noted that this verse states that the fighting from Bozrah to Jerusalem will precede His standing upon the Mount of Olives of verse 4.

Verse 4 describes the eighth stage, Yeshua’s victory accent up the Mount of Olives. His arrival at Jerusalem is described in verse 4a: And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east.

Too often, teachers of prophecy have taught that at the Second Coming, Yeshua will come first to the Mount of Olives to fight against the enemy. However, that is not the order given in Scripture. To begin with, the Second Coming will occur, not upon the Mount of Olives initially, but at the city of Bozrah or Petra (Mic. 2:12–13; Is. 34:1–7; 63:1–6). It is at that point that He will begin fighting with the forces of the Antichrist who have come down to Bozrah or Petra to try to destroy the Jewish Remnant located there. Zechariah 12:7 has already stated that Judah will be saved before the inhabitants of Jerusalem will be saved. The fighting will finally end in the Valley of Jehoshaphat (Joel 3:12–13). The Results of the Second Coming—Zechariah 14:6–11

The seventh unit of the Little Apocalypse of Zechariah gives five results of the Second Coming. The first result will be a change in the light sources in verses 6–7: And it shall come to pass in that day, that there shall not be light; the bright ones shall withdraw themselves: but it shall be one day which is known unto Jehovah; not day, and not night; but it shall come to pass, that at evening time there shall be light.

The timing phrase: it shall come to pass in that day means that this will happen in conjunction with the Second Coming. Verse 6 states: there shall not be light, meaning there will no longer be an interchange between day and night every twelve hours as it is today. The phrase the bright ones shall withdraw themselves indicates that the natural light sources are somehow blanked out. Verse 7 speaks about one day which is known unto Jehovah; not day, and not night. This is speaking of the Millennial Kingdom, when there will be an equivalent amount of light, whether is considered daytime or nighttime, there will be no darkness. The same truth is taught in Isaiah 30:26.

The second result will be the new Millennial River in verse 8: And it shall come to pass in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the eastern sea, and half of them toward the western sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.

Again, the timing phrase is given: it shall come to pass in that day, meaning that it will happen during the period of the Kingdom. The Millennial River is described as: living waters shall go out from Jerusalem. Actually, this river begins at the threshold of the Temple. Two other passages that speak of this river are: Joel 3:18 and Ezekiel 47:1–12. By combining all three of these passages, it is clear that the Millennial River will begin to gush out from the threshold of the Millennial Temple, which at that time will be located approximately thirty-five miles north of Jerusalem. Initially, it will flow eastward from the threshold of the Temple, but then it will turn south and make its way to Jerusalem. Once it reaches Jerusalem, it will split in two, half of it will flow toward the eastern sea, the Dead Sea, and the other half will flow toward the western sea, the Mediterranean Sea. Today the Dead Sea is just that, a dead sea, so thick with minerals that it cannot sustain life; not even salt-water fish can survive there. However, this river will be living waters that will change the nature of a specific area of the Dead Sea, so that area along the western shore will become a major fishing industry.

The third result is that Jehovah will be the King of the world and will be the One and Only God in verse 9: And Jehovah shall be King over all the earth: in that day shall Jehovah be one, and his name one.

The Jehovah spoken of here is the same as Jehovah my God shall come of verse 5, and He is the same as the Messiah of verses 3–4. So again, the Messiah is God Himself, and He will be the one King over all the earth. Furthermore, the verse states: in that day shall Jehovah be one, and his name one. In the Kingdom Period, there will be no other God worshipped and He will not be referred to by any false names, such as “the Golden Calf” of Jeroboam’s rival system.

The fourth result of the Second Coming will be a number of topographical changes in verse 10: All the land shall be made like the Arabah, from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem; and she shall be lifted up, and shall dwell in her place, from Benjamin’s gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananel unto the king’s wine-presses.

Zechariah states: All the land shall be made like to Arabah, from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. The Arabah is that deep, flat cleft that runs all the way from the Dead Sea to Eilat, at the northern end of the Gulf of Eilat. The Destruction of the Enemy—Zechariah 14:12–15

Having described the events of the Great Tribulation, the Campaign of Armageddon, the Second Coming, and some of the results of the Second Coming, Zechariah next described in more detail just how the enemy will be destroyed.

Zechariah gives the introduction to this unit in verse 12a: And this shall be the plague wherewith Jehovah will smite all the peoples that have warred against Jerusalem.

All together God will use four specific methods to destroy the forces of the Antichrist as part of His Second Coming. First, there will be the disintegration of human flesh by melting, described in verse 12b: their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their sockets, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

As they are standing there, the skin will melt away from their bones and their eyes will suddenly begin to melt within their sockets. Just how this will occur is given in detail in Habakkuk 3, which discusses the events of the Second Coming and points out that death rays from the fingers of the Messiah will begin to shine forth. It is by means of these death rays that the melting of the enemy will occur.

The second method is civil strife, described in verse 13: And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from Jehovah shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbor, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbor.

Again, Zechariah emphasizes the timing element: it shall come to pass in that day, meaning that it will happen during the Campaign of Armageddon. This is a method God has used frequently in the past. They will begin fighting among themselves because of a great tumult created by Jehovah. The sudden confusion that results from the Second Coming will cause the army, which is comprised of the various nationalities, to begin fighting among themselves. This will create civil strife and chaos, as they begin to destroy one another.

The third method that God will use to destroy the enemy is one that Zechariah mentioned earlier, the supernatural energizing of the Jewish forces, described in verse 14: And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the nations round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance.

Many of the Judeans who were rescued at Bozrah will come up to Jerusalem with Jesus and be involved in helping with the rescue of Jerusalem. Furthermore, he states that the wealth of all the nations round about shall be gathered together. This results in the Jewish people collecting spoil, rather than becoming spoil of the enemy themselves. Some of the spoil listed is: gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance.

And the fourth method that God will use to destroy the enemy is a plague that will afflict the animals in verse 15: And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in those camps, as that plague.

Whether or not this is to be understood as literal animals or more modern forms of travel, the conclusion is the same: the transports used by the enemy against the Jews will be completely neutralized; they will suffer the same type of plague that was mentioned in verse 12.

IX. The Celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles—Zechariah 14:16–19

It will be obligatory, not only for Jews but also for all Gentile nations, to celebrate and observe the Feast of Tabernacles according to verse 16: And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations that came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, Jehovah of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

Once a year, every year, throughout the 1,000 years of the Kingdom, it will be mandatory for every Gentile nation that came against Jerusalem to send a delegation to Jerusalem in order to observe the Feast of Tabernacles. This makes sense because the Kingdom is the fulfillment of the Feast of Tabernacles. The purpose is twofold: to worship the King, Jehovah of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

The punishment for refusal to observe the feast is given in verse 17: And it shall be, that whoso of all the families of the earth goes not up unto Jerusalem to worship the King, Jehovah of hosts, upon them there shall be no rain.

Should any nation fail to send a delegation to Jerusalem, God will punish that nation by inflicting a plague of drought, and no rain will fall for that year upon that nation.

He then used Egypt as an example in verses 18–19: And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, neither shall it be upon them; there shall be the plague wherewith Jehovah will smite the nations that go not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. If any nation would be tempted to dispense with the observance of the Feast of Tabernacles in the Kingdom, it would certainly be the Egyptians. The Feast of Tabernacles was one of the Seven Holy Seasons of Israel inaugurated as part of the observance of God’s deliverance of Israel from the land of Egypt. Perhaps one day the Egyptians might say to themselves, “Why should we send a delegation to Jerusalem to observe a festival that commemorates an Egyptian defeat?” Because of that kind of mentality, it could very well be that one particular year the Egyptians will say, “We are not going to send a delegation to observe an ordinance that celebrates the defeat of the Egyptians.” But when they refuse to send a delegation to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles, God will punish the Egyptians by not sending any rain. Although Egypt is taken as the example, the same thing applies to all the other Gentile nations at that time.

B. The Holiness of the Land—Zechariah 14:20–21

In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLY UNTO JEHOVAH; and the pots in Jehovah’s house shall be like the bowls before the altar. Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holy unto Jehovah of hosts; and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and boil therein: and in that day there shall be no more a Canaanite in the house of Jehovah of hosts.

The second truth that Zechariah revealed concerning the Messianic Kingdom is that everything in the Land will be holy. Zechariah begins by emphasizing the timing: In that day, in the Millennial Kingdom. Zechariah emphasized the holiness of everything in the Land of Israel, not just the vessels in the Temple Compound. Under the Mosaic system, there was a division between that which was for holy use and that, which was for mundane, earthly, secular, or common use. Zechariah makes three points in these verses. First, in verse 20a: shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLY UNTO JEHOVAH. This is the phrase that was emblazoned on the mitre of the High Priest. In the Millennial Kingdom, even the bells that hang around the horses’ necks will be considered holy. Secondly, in verses 20b–21: the pots in Jehovah’s house shall be like the bowls before the altar. Everything will be equally sanctified within the Temple Compound, including the pots used for boiling, as well as the bowls used for pouring out the blood of the sacrifices on the Altar. Under the Mosaic Law, these things were not considered to be co-equal, but they will be in the Kingdom. Thirdly: Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holy unto Jehovah of hosts. All domestic utensils throughout the Land will be considered holy so that all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and boil therein; it will not matter which pot they bring, they will all be equally holy.

Zechariah closed his book by stating: in that day there shall be no more a Canaanite in the house of Jehovah of hosts. The timing is: in that day, during the Millennial Kingdom. God commanded the Jewish people to totally exterminate the Canaanite population because of their extreme degree of sinfulness. But never in the history of Israel were they able to accomplish this. There were Canaanites living in the Land after Joshua died. There were Canaanites living in the Land even during the days of David and Solomon. In fact, David and Solomon had agreements with the Phoenicians, who were Canaanites. So there were Canaanites present throughout biblical history. However, once the Kingdom is established, only then will God’s will be carried out to its fulfillment and there will be no more Canaanites anywhere in the Land, let alone in the house of Jehovah of hosts. As a result of the total extinction of the Canaanites, everything in the Land will be holy, including the bells on the horses and the pots and pans in every Jewish woman’s kitchen.

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication, and they shall look unto me whom they have pierced.
