The Author

The name Habakkuk comes from a Hebrew root, meaning, “to embrace.” When writing his name, the last consonant is doubled, thus intensifying the meaning. The name Habakkuk, then, means “full embrace.” Outside of that, nothing else is known about him or his family. There is a Jewish tradition that says Habakkuk was the son of the Shunammite woman. This is based on 2 Kings 4:16, where Elisha tells the Shunammite woman that she will “embrace a son.” Since the name Habakkuk means “full embrace,” this Jewish tradition claims that Habakkuk was the son of the Shunammite woman. But that is purely traditional and there is no real historical validity to that particular claim.

B. The Date

When the Book of Habakkuk was written can be determined with a fair degree of accuracy from certain statements made within this particular book. For example, it is obvious from Habakkuk 1:1–5 that Babylon had not yet risen to empire status, since the appearance of Babylon is prophesied as being a work of God at which Israel will wonder with great wonder. So the book was obviously written before Babylon became a major power. This also means that the book was written before the fall of Nineveh, which occurred in 612 b.c. Nineveh was destroyed by the Babylonians, so by then, the rise of Babylon to empire status would no longer have been a surprise. Therefore, the Book of Habakkuk must have been written before 612 b.c. It would also appear that the book was written some time after 640 b.c., because the rise of Babylon was a work that would be done within their lifetime. Habakkuk used the term your days in verse 5, which would put it roughly about 640 b.c. Another clue comes from the superscription in Habakkuk 3:19. Based upon that superscription, the indication is that the book was written at a time when the Levitical priesthood was in full session and operating correctly. The best time to put the writing of the Book of Habakkuk would be during the reign of Josiah, and that fits all of the facts. So the book was written some time between 640–622 b.c., and more likely during the latter reign of Josiah, after he had thoroughly cleansed the Temple, probably between 630–622 b.c.

C. The Locale

It is obvious from the context that Habakkuk was a prophet living in Judah, since Israel, the northern kingdom, was no longer in existence by then. Based on the superscription of Habakkuk 3:19, it would appear that he was also living in the City of Jerusalem. The locale, then, was definitely Judah, and most likely Jerusalem.

D. The Historical Setting

The historical setting was the time of the reign of good King Josiah. It was a time of great outward prosperity, but the people themselves were inwardly corrupt. Although Josiah’s own heart was right, as far as the people were concerned, much of his reformation was merely external conformity, rather than internal conformity. On the international scene, the Assyrians were no longer an immediate threat to Judah, but they were still a strong power in the days of Habakkuk.

E. The Major Points

The Book of Habakkuk makes four major points. First, the fact of divine discipline: at some point, God will discipline sin. Secondly, sin is self destructive: sin carries within itself the seeds of its own destruction. Thirdly, the just shall live by faith. And fourthly, all injustices will be rectified by the Second Coming of the Messiah.

F. The Theme

The theme of the Book of Habakkuk is: The just shall live by faith. It is this particular theme that later became the theme of the Book of Romans.

G. The New Testament Quotations

In the New Testament, Habakkuk is quoted four times. Habakkuk 1:5 is quoted in Acts 13:41. Habakkuk 2:4 is quoted twice in the New Testament: in Romans 1:17 and in Galatians 3:11. It is significant that this verse is quoted by these two particular New Testament books, because it is Habakkuk 2:4 that teaches the theme of the book: the just shall live by faith. In these two books written by Paul, the apostle was particularly concerned with the issue of living by faith. The Uniqueness of the Book

The uniqueness of the Book of Habakkuk is threefold. Secondly, he was not concerned with delivering a message, but the content of his burden is solving a problem. The Exposition

As far as exposition is concerned, the book is divided into three main units. Habakkuk’s Complaints—Habakkuk 1:2–4

Jehovah, how long shall I cry, and you will not hear? The first is in verse 2: how long? Habakkuk stated that he prayed many times over the people’s sinfulness, especially the sin of violence, but God never seemed to answer. For Habakkuk, the key issue is violence, which he mentions six times: here; in 2:8; twice in 2:17; and in 3:9. So how long is God going to tolerate this sin among the people?

That leads to a second complaint in verse 3: Why? To make things worse, everywhere God led Habakkuk, he saw the increase of sin: he sees iniquity, which is moral evil with some tragic results; he sees perverseness; he sees destruction, which is greed and cruel plundering of 2:17; he also sees strife; and he sees the rising of contention. What is clear from these verses is that Habakkuk developed a genuine sensitivity to sin. If he is surrounded by it, he does not understand why God does not seem to do anything about it. Prophets had to be verified by near prophecies before their far prophecies could be trusted. The rise of Babylon to empire status in their day verified that Habakkuk was what he claimed to be: a prophet of God. If any other man had said that Babylon would be an empire again, it would never have been believed. God stated that He would bring up the Chaldeans out of obscurity. After the decline of Egypt, Babylon rose to empire status, especially under Hammurabi. Then the Assyrians became the dominant power and destroyed the Babylonian Empire. But under Nabopolassar, the father of Nebuchadnezzar, it did rise again and defeated Nineveh, reaching empire status once again. This is the picture God is portraying in this passage.

God characterized the Babylonian rise to power in four statements. First, they were a bitter nation, emphasizing their cruelty to subjugated nations. Secondly, they were a hasty nation, emphasizing the speed of conquest by which the Babylonians would be characterized. Thirdly, they would march through the breadth of the earth, a prerogative of their empire status. And fourthly, they would possess dwelling places that are not theirs, meaning they would conquer foreign territory by breaking their alliances.

The first point in God’s answer to Habakkuk was that the Chaldeans would rise out of their obscurity and swiftly punish the people of Judah for their sins.

b. First, He mentioned their independence in verse 7: They are terrible and dreadful; their judgment and their dignity proceed from themselves.

The Babylonians were an independent people and they thought they did not have to rely on any nation other than themselves.

Secondly, He mentioned the speed of their conquest in verse 8: Their horses also are swifter than leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves; and their horsemen press proudly on: yea, their horsemen come from far; they fly as an eagle that hasten to devour.

He compares their horses to swift leopards and fierce evening wolves. Their horsemen appeared to be like an eagle flying through the air. That is how swiftly the Babylonians would conquer.

Thirdly, He mentioned their invincibility in verse 9: They come all of them for violence; the set of their faces is forwards; and they gather captives as the sand.

Nothing seemed to be able to stop their ease of conquest; they set their faces forward and nothing forced them to turn around. They will be collecting prisoners of war as the sand.

Fourthly, He mentioned their ease of conquest in verses 10–11a: Yea, he scoffs at kings, and princes are a derision unto him; he derides every stronghold; for he heaps up dust, and takes it. This factor will lead to Babylon’s downfall. The principle is that sin is self-destructive and always carries within itself the seeds of its own destruction.

To summarize the first dialogue, Habakkuk complained about Judah’s sinfulness and questioned how God could tolerate this sinfulness. He had a problem with the deep-seated violence within Judah. God answered that He was not going to tolerate it, but would very shortly raise up the Babylonians to punish Judah. However, that answer gave Habakkuk even greater problems than he had before, and led to a second dialogue.

B. Habakkuk’s Assurance—Habakkuk 1:12

Are not you from everlasting, O Jehovah my God, my Holy One? we shall not die. He is quite confident that the Jews would not be totally destroyed because of God’s holiness. Jehovah has always been Israel’s God, and God’s holiness militates against His breaking His promises, including the survival of the Jewish nation. God would certainly discipline Judah, but He would never allow the Jews to be totally destroyed. Habakkuk now recognized the place of Babylon in the plan and program of God. The purpose of their rise to power will be twofold: first, for judgment, to punish the sins of Judah; and secondly, for correction, not total destruction. Indeed, Judah will go into Babylonian Captivity because of idolatry, but as a result, she will be cured of her idolatry. Habakkuk’s Problem—Habakkuk 1:13–17

Having stated his assurance, Habakkuk then presented his problem in verse 13: You that are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and that can not look on perverseness, wherefore look you upon them that deal treacherously, and hold your peace when the wicked swallows up the man that is more righteous than he.

How can a holy God use the Chaldeans, of all people, to punish the Jews? It was indeed true that Judah was wicked, as Habakkuk had complained in the first dialogue. The trouble was that the Chaldeans or Babylonians were much worse than the Jews. In fact, the birthplace of idolatry was in Babylon. So, how could God use the Chaldeans to punish the Jews? This question has been asked down through the centuries, and it is only the personalities that have changed. For example, how could God use the Crusaders and the Nazis to inflict what they did upon the Jews? Throughout history, God has used what appeared to be more sinful nations to punish His own people, Israel.

Habakkuk spelled out the Chaldean’s sinfulness in verses 14–16: and make men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? First, in verses 14–15, the nations had become like the fishes of the sea, easily captured by the Babylonian net. Although it seems unjust that God is going to use the Chaldeans to punish the Jews, Habakkuk will have to trust that what God is going to do will come out right.

Secondly, in verse 5, as for the Chaldeans, their sin carries within it the seeds of their own destruction. God told Habakkuk that the key sin of the Chaldeans was drunkenness. This is reaffirmed by two ancient Greek historians, Zenophon and Herodotus, both of whom emphasized the Babylonian tendency toward drunkenness. In fact, even on the day of Babylon’s fall, they were characterized by drunkenness rather than watchfulness (Dan. 5). In this vision of the future, Habakkuk sees himself as a member of the Faithful Remnant in the Tribulation. The Faithful Remnant will be the majority of the Jewish population that survives the seven years of the Tribulation. Throughout the Tribulation, they will be unbelievers as far as Yeshua (Jesus) is concerned, as well as being unbelievers as far as the Antichrist is concerned. They are faithful in the sense that they will believe in the God of Israel to the extent of Old Testament revelation. They are the ones who will be saved as a nation during the last three days of the Great Tribulation.

Representing the Faithful Remnant in the Tribulation, Habakkuk said, “I have heard the news of the report.” This report is the good news of the Second Coming of the Messiah, as the context clearly shows. In the context of the Book of Revelation, the Faithful Remnant could have heard this report from two possible sources. First, the 144,000 Jews of Revelation 7, who will be evangelizing during this period. The second source is the Two Witnesses of Revelation 11. Furthermore, Habakkuk said, I am afraid because, in conjunction with this report, he knew there were more judgments to come that would precede the Second Coming.

Then he said: O Jehovah, revive your work in the midst of the years. The word years refers to the seven years of the Tribulation. Here Habakkuk made four points.

First, in verse 12, there will be the marching of the Messiah through the land in indignation and the threshing of the nations in anger. This verse summarizes a more graphic description found in Isaiah 63:1–6, where the Messiah is pictured as trampling on the enemy, and in the process, their life blood stains His clothing.

Secondly, verse 13a states the one key reason He will thresh the nations at the Second Coming: for the salvation of your anointed; He threshes the nation on behalf of Israel. Before He comes, Israel will be saved spiritually, and when He comes, Israel will be saved physically from their enemies.

Thirdly, in verses 13b–14a, he describes the fall of the Antichrist in two statements: first, You wound the head out of the house of the wicked man; and secondly, You did pierce with his own staves the head of his warriors. The word head is singular, so there is only one ruler over all the armies of all the nations. This one head will be the Antichrist himself. That head will receive a deadly and fatal wound. According to 1 Thessalonians 2:9, the Antichrist will be the very first casualty of the Second Coming.

The fourth point Habakkuk makes about the Campaign of Armageddon is that it will lead to the fall of the Gentile nations in verses 14b–15. After the death of the Antichrist, the nations that he led against the Faithful Remnant are destroyed. Their purpose was to scatter Israel, but now, they are the ones being scattered, trampled, dispersed. According to Revelation 14, this will result in blood spewing out so that it flows to the depth of a horse’s bridle.

D. Still speaking on behalf of the Faithful Remnant, Habakkuk states the reason for the fear, “I must wait quietly for the day of trouble, for the people who will invade us.” He realizes that these prophecies have been given unconditionally by God, therefore, they must be fulfilled. These promises include not only the good things about the Kingdom, but also the bad things about the judgment preceding it. Again, the prayer, in its prophetic context, occurs in the middle of the Tribulation, so he knows that he must wait for the invasion of the enemy before he will ever see the Second Coming of the Messiah. Although this fills him with great fear, it is not the kind of fear that chases away faith.

2. Their Faith—Habakkuk 3:17–19

For though the fig tree shall not flourish, Neither shall fruit be in the vines; The labor of the olive shall fail, And the fields shall yield no food; The flock shall be cut off from the fold, And there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in Jehovah, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Jehovah, the Lord, is my strength; And he makes my feet like hinds’ feet, And will make me to walk upon my high places.

Habakkuk then described the faith of the Faithful Remnant by mentioning three things. First, in verse 17, although all sources of livelihood and sustenance are cut off, this will not turn him against the Lord. Secondly, in verse 18, nevertheless, he states: Yet I will joy in the God of my salvation. This is the same kind of faith that Job expressed, when he said: though he slay me, yet will I trust him (Job 13:15). Habakkuk is speaking not only for himself, but for the future Faithful Remnant. And thirdly, verse 19 promises that God will ultimately have the victory. The feet of the Faithful Remnant will be like hinds’ feet, meaning they will be sure footed; and they will be in high places, meaning “total confidence.” In this context, it is a symbol of total confidence of victory (2 Sam. 22:34; Ps. 18:33).

Although he cannot understand everything about the way God works, and although he has questioned God’s use of a more sinful nation to punish a less sinful one, Habakkuk has learned two things. First, the just shall live out his life by faith, even when he cannot understand why God does things the way He does. Secondly, in chapter 3, he also learned that all injustices will be rectified and settled once and for all with the Second Coming of the Messiah.

With this, the Book of Habakkuk comes to an end.

The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.
