The Author

As to his name, Jonah means “dove,” although, throughout the book, he tends to act more like a hawk than a dove. As to his family, we know only two things. First, he was the son of Amittai. His father’s name means “truth.” Secondly, Jonah was from Gath-hepher, a town of the Tribe of Zebulun (Josh. 19:13). Thus, Jonah was from the Tribe of Zebulun; he was a Zebulunite. As to locale, Gath hepher is a town in the northern kingdom, Israel, only three miles away from Nazareth, where Yeshua (Jesus) grew up. Although Jonah was from Israel, after a prophetic ministry there, he was eventually sent to Nineveh, outside the Land.

B. The Historical Period

The historical period in which Jonah prophesied is known, because according to verse 23, he prophesied in the days of Jeroboam II, who ruled Israel during the years 824–783 b.c. Sometime within that forty one year timeframe, came the ministry of the Prophet Jonah. This historical setting can be summarized in three points. First, it was a time of tremendous outward prosperity. In fact, Jeroboam II along with Uzziah, king of Judah, his contemporary in the southern kingdom, extended the Jewish borders to the extent that had existed in the days of David and Solomon. Secondly, the other side of the coin was that it was also a time of inward spiritual corruption. Thirdly, preceding the prophecy of Jonah, the Prophet Amos of the southern kingdom, Judah, had been sent by God to the northern kingdom, Israel, to prophesy the coming destruction of Israel by the Assyrian Empire. In order to understand some of Jonah’s actions, reactions, and objections in his own book, it is important to remember that Amos had already declared God’s intention to destroy the northern kingdom by the hand of Assyria.

C. The Major Points

The Book of Jonah makes three major points. First, it teaches the universality of God: God is not only the God of the Jews, He is also the God of the Gentiles. God is in control of everything, including the weather, plants, and fish. The second point is God’s willingness to save Gentiles. God had already declared His willingness to save Jews many times, but here He declares His willingness to save Gentiles. The third point is that God will not cast aside His servant because of faithlessness; He will discipline His servant, but not cast him aside.

D. The Theme

The theme of the Book of Jonah is simply the turning of Jonah.

E. But the presence spoken of here is not the omnipresence of God; rather, he was fleeing from the Shechinah Glory, which is the visible, localized presence of the Lord, residing within the Holy of Holies of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. First, concerning personal meditation, notice four steps: he went down to the seaport, Joppa; he found the ship sailing to Tarshish; he paid the fare; he went into the ship to go to Tarshish and flee from the presence of the Lord. Clearly, this disobedience to God’s command was premeditated by Jonah. Secondly, it shows satanic providence in that he had already decided to go to Tarshish before he left Gath hepher for Joppa. When he arrived in Joppa, lo and behold, there was a ship going to Tarshish! Now the fare would have to be paid, lo and behold, he had the money needed to pay the fare! Everything seemed to work perfectly. If it were based entirely on circumstances, he could say, “Well, this must be the Lord’s will; everything is working out.” However, God’s will cannot be determined purely on the basis of circumstances. What is found here is not divine providence but satanic providence, working with Jonah’s personal meditation to disobey the Lord.

C. First, they were afraid. Even though they were experienced sailors, they recognized that something unique was happening. The mariners were from various Gentile nations, so everyone began praying to their own particular god. Secondly, in order to try to save themselves and make the ship lighter, they threw the cargo into the sea. The Hebrew word used here for cast forth is the same word used for God’s sending the storm in verse 4. Just as God hurled the storm against them, that is how they hurled the cargo into the sea. The mariners responded by praying to their gods in fear and working feverishly to try to save the ship.

The second reaction was that of Jonah in verse 5b: But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

Jonah, instead, decided to go down into the hold of the ship in order to sleep. He is trying to sleep to escape the accusations of conscience. By now, he realized that many lives were in jeopardy because of one man’s disobedience.

And the third reaction is that of the captain of the ship in verse 6: So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What means you, O sleeper? arise, call upon your God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

When the captain saw Jonah asleep, he called upon Jonah to wake up and pray to his God in the hope that all would not perish.

2. Something in these men indicated that they were not the heathen people they are usually presumed to be. Their sense of culture and respect for human life is evidenced by their response in trying to do all they could to avoid killing the Lord’s prophet.

The mariners did all they could within their power to get back to land as seen in verse 13: Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

In spite of their efforts to get back to shore, the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. Finally, they realized that they would have to follow Jonah’s suggestion.

Before they threw Jonah into the sea, they prayed for forgiveness in verse 14: Wherefore they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We beseech you, O Jehovah, we beseech you, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for you, O Jehovah, have done as it pleased you.

They now turned to the very God who was responsible for the storm and prayed: We beseech you, O Jehovah. There was a request to be spared: we beseech you, let us not perish for this man’s life. Next there is a request for forgiveness: lay not upon us innocent blood. These Gentile sailors came to a saving knowledge of the God of Israel in spite of Jonah’s bad testimony before them.

II. The Proclamation of the King—Jonah 3:6–9

The king’s repentance is described in verse 6: And the tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

It is possible to determine who this king was from history; his name was Adad Nirari III (810–782 b.c.). In fact, according to Assyrian records, Adad Nirari III was known for his monotheism, and he ruled the same time that Jeroboam II ruled Israel. The king’s actions are described in four statements. First, he left the throne, a sign of humility. Secondly, he laid aside the royal robe. Thirdly, he dressed in sackcloth. And fourthly, he sat in ashes. These are all signs of repentance.

The king then issued a proclamation in verses 7–8: And he made proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water; but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and beast, and let them cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in his hands.

There were four points in this proclamation for the whole city to follow: first, they were to fast; secondly, they were to wear sackcloth; thirdly, they were to cry to God; and fourthly, they were to cease from evil.

The intent behind the king’s repentance is stated in verse 9: Who knows whether God will not turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

The king’s intent was to cause God not to destroy the city. This pagan Gentile king, Adad Nirari III, correctly read into Jonah’s prophecy a conditional element: that Nineveh would be destroyed unless there was repentance. Judgment was not unavoidable, otherwise, there would be no need for the warning. God did not send prophets to Sodom and Gomorrah to warn them of the coming destruction. The Anger of Jonah—Jonah 4:1–5

Jonah’s reaction to the repentance of the people is described in verse 1: But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.

Jonah became exceedingly angry when he saw Nineveh’s repentance and God’s sparing of the city. Most evangelists, of course, would have been delighted at this response. Imagine preaching for a forty day period and ending up with a whole city repenting as a result. But Jonah was not just perturbed, he was displeased … exceedingly, as angry as he could possibly be.

The reason for Jonah’s complaint is given in verse 2: And he prayed unto Jehovah, and said, I pray you, O Jehovah, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I hasted to flee unto Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, and repents you of the evil.

In Jonah’s complaint, one can finally realize the real reason Jonah fled to Tarshish. He fled because he knew God was merciful, and it is the nature of God to respond to repentance. But Jonah did not wish to see Nineveh repent and therefore be spared. The reason for this is revealed in the expression, “Didn’t I tell this to you when I was still in my country?” In the Hebrew text, the emphasis is on the words my country. Unfortunately, Jonah is often interpreted to be an anti-Gentile bigot, but this is not the problem. If he were, he would not have wanted to go to Tarshish either, since Tarshish was also a Gentile city. The problem was not that he was anti-Gentile, but rather, that he was pro-Israel, a nationalist. This is seen from his statement, my country.

From the preaching of Amos, Jonah already knew that Assyria had been chosen by God to destroy Israel. If Nineveh was spared destruction, that would signal the certainty of the coming destruction of Israel. What Jonah did not want to be was the instrument that God would use to bring Nineveh to repentance, and therefore, be spared. Furthermore, he knew that if he were the instrument of Nineveh’s coming to repentance, he would also be an instrument, albeit in an indirect or secondary way, of Israel’s destruction.

In light of all this, Jonah desired to die in verse 3: Therefore now, O Jehovah, take, I beseech you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

He had fulfilled his commission, so he was no longer in a state of disobedience. If he died now, he would not go down to Sheol in a state of disobedience, and he was now willing to die.

Jehovah asked Jonah a question in verse 4: And Jehovah said, Does you well to be angry?

Instead of putting him to death, Jehovah asked him, “Do you really have good cause to be angry in light of the grace I have extended to you in bringing you back to life so that you could fulfill My commission?”

Jonah’s response is in verse 5: Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city.

Instead of answering God, Jonah went out to the east side of the city and built a booth to protect himself somewhat. The Picture Lesson—Jonah 4:6–8

The picture lesson comes in three stages. The first stage is the preparation of the gourd in verse 6: And Jehovah God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his evil case. The Hebrew word for gourd refers to the castor-oil plant. It was a castor-oil plant that grew high enough to provide shade over Jonah. That which God commanded the gourd to do, it did and obeyed God. It came over Jonah, provided shade for Jonah, and helped deliver him from his depression. Jonah responded by becoming exceeding glad; he was less despondent.

But then came the second stage of the picture lesson in verse 7: But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd, that it withered.

In the second stage, a worm was also prepared or appointed by God. And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

“Do you well to be angry in light of the grace that was shown to you?” This time Jonah did answer God, “Yes, I do well to be angry, even to the point of wanting to die, that is how angry I am; I am so angry that I want to die.”

God’s response differentiates His concern from Jonah’s concern in verses 10–11: And Jehovah said, You have had regard for the gourd, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: and should not I have regard for Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

In verse 10, Jonah’s concern was for that which was inanimate and irrational: the gourd, which was something he did not work for.

But in verse 11, God’s concern was for the animate and the rational: the 120,000 people who cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand. If this is a reference to children who are too young to know the right from the left, that would make the entire population of Nineveh to be around 600,000 people. However, this expression may simply be a reference to a lack of spiritual discernment, and therefore the 120,000 refers to the entire population of the city. God’s concern was for the 120,000 animate and rational people for whom both God and Jonah did labor; God labored in His grace and Jonah labored through his experiences.

The book does not tell how Jonah responded, but the very style and nature of the book and the fact that Jonah would put such a book together implies that Jonah finally saw God’s viewpoint and turned.

Applications

In closing this study of the Book of Jonah, six applications can be made. First, this book teaches the universality of God; He is the God of both Jews and Gentiles. Secondly, it shows us God’s willingness to save Gentiles as well as Jews. Thirdly, it teaches the principle of delayed judgment. Eventually, Nineveh did suffer a judgment, and Nahum the Prophet gives the details of Nineveh’s destruction. Of course, Nahum’s prophecy is the one Jonah would have preferred to have prophesied, but that was God’s will for Nahum, not for Jonah. Sometimes God will delay judgment because of repentance. Fourthly, God will not cast aside His servant because of faithlessness. Although Jonah was faithless, God still responded to him in mercy. Fifth, it teaches the nature of ministry; the results may not be what one expects. One might expect good results and get bad ones, or one might expect bad results and get good ones. But, whether they are good or bad, God is responsible for the results. The minister’s responsibility is faithfulness. Sixth, a believer should not react to the grace given to another believer without remembering the grace that was given to him. It must be remembered that God deals differently with different believers.

Now the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
