At the outset, we must remember that two of these four Jewish temples are historical, whereas the other two are yet prophetic. The two historical temples are: Solomon’s Temple and the Second Temple, sometimes known as Herod’s Temple. The two future temples are: the Tribulation Temple, to be followed by the Millennial Temple.

I. Solomon’s Temple

From the time of Moses until the reign of King David, the Ark of the Covenant dwelt inside the Tabernacle, which was, of course, a huge, magnificent tent. When David built his own house, it troubled him that he was living in a house while the Ark of the Covenant was living in a tent. He began to develop a desire in his heart to build a temple for the Lord. This gave rise to the First Temple, also known as Solomon’s Temple.

A. David’s Preparations for the Temple

The beginnings of David’s desire and the plans he began to make are recorded in 2 Samuel 7:1–17. In the course of a conversation between David and Nathan the Prophet, David spelled out his desire in verses 1–3 to build a temple for God so that there would no longer be the incongruity of David’s dwelling in a house of cedar while the Ark of the Covenant dwelt in a house of curtains: And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and Jehovah had given him rest from all his enemies round about, that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within curtains. And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in your heart; for Jehovah is with you.

Although Nathan, at first, told David to go ahead with his project, God revealed to Nathan that David would not be the one to build the Temple of God in verses 4–11a: And it came to pass the same night, that the word of Jehovah came unto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus says Jehovah, Shall you build me a house for me to dwell in? for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. He did this in two ways. First of all, he purchased Mount Moriah, the area upon which the Temple was to stand, from its Jebusite owner. This is recorded in 1 Chronicles 21:18–22:1.

After having purchased the site of the future Temple of God, David proceeded to gather many materials so there would be less work for Solomon to do. The Work Begins

When Solomon established his kingdom after the death of his father David, he carried out one of the key commissions David gave while on his deathbed: to build the Temple of God. The place where this was built is recorded in 2 Chronicles 3:1: Then Solomon began to build the house of Jehovah at Jerusalem on mount Moriah, where Jehovah appeared unto David his father, which he made ready in the place that David had appointed, in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

We are told several things clearly in this passage. First of all, that Solomon built a house on the very threshing-floor that David had purchased from Ornan the Jebusite. Secondly, that this was known as mount Moriah, which was the site of the sacrifice of Isaac (Gen. 22:1–19). So here we have the story of Abraham, David, and Solomon coming together in the place where God would receive the acceptable sacrifice.

Solomon commenced building the Temple as recorded in 1 Kings 5:1–6:36. Although David had made many preparations for this building, it still took seven years to build according to 1 Kings 6:37–38.

2. The Work Completed

Further work on the Temple is described in 1 Kings 7:13–51. The announcement of the completion of the project is finally described in 1 Kings 7:51: Thus all the work that king Solomon wrought in the house of Jehovah was finished. The Temple Authenticated

Of course, the key question would be: Will God authenticate this Temple by making it His residence as He did in the Tabernacle? Will the visible manifestation of God’s presence now depart from the Tabernacle and take up His abode in the Temple? The Desecration of the Temple

In spite of its magnificence, in spite of its being the center of Jewish worship in the days of Solomon and other kings of Judah, nevertheless, certain rulers of Judah profaned this Temple for their own purposes and for pagan worship.

Among the first of these was Queen Athaliah. Her desecration of the Temple is recorded in 2 Chronicles 24:7: For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of Jehovah did they bestow upon the Baalim.

According to this passage, Athaliah and her children took the dedicated things out of the House of God and turned them over to the temple of Baal. This is one of the earliest records of the desecration of Solomon’s Temple.

Even a good king desecrated the Temple. Although King Uzziah, by and large, is recorded to have been a good king, one day his pride got the best of him and he, too, profaned the Temple. His desecration is recorded in 2 Chronicles 26:16–21: But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up, so that he did corruptly, and he trespassed against Jehovah his God; for he went into the temple of Jehovah to burn incense upon the altar of incense. And Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him fourscore priests of Jehovah, that were valiant men: and they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It pertains not unto you, Uzziah, to burn incense unto Jehovah, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for you have trespassed; neither shall it be for your honor from Jehovah God. Then Uzziah was wroth; and he had a censer in his hand to burn incense; and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy broke forth in his forehead before the priests in the house of Jehovah, beside the altar of incense. And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he was leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out quickly from thence; yea, himself had also to go out, because Jehovah had smitten him. And Uzziah the king was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a separate house, being a leper; for he was cut off from the house of Jehovah: and Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.

Here we have an instance of a good king who ended badly. Because of his pride, he desecrated the Temple by trying to burn incense, a duty allocated by law to the sons of Aaron. Unlike other cases, this was not an attempt to institute pagan worship; the act of burning incense was part of true worship. However, it was not for Uzziah of the Tribe of Judah to do so, but only for those of the Tribe of Levi, and by doing so he, too, was guilty of desecration.

A far worse deed was perpetrated by his grandson, Ahaz. This is recorded in 2 Kings 16:10–17: And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tilgath pileser king of Assyria, and saw the altar that was at Damascus; and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion of the altar, and the pattern of it, according to all the workmanship thereof. And Urijah the priest built an altar: according to all that king Ahaz had sent from Damascus, so did Urijah the priest make it against the coming of king Ahaz from Damascus. And when the king was come from Damascus, the king saw the altar: and the king drew near unto the altar, and offered thereon. And he burnt his burnt-offering and his meal-offering, and poured his drink-offering, and sprinkled the blood of his peace-offerings, upon the altar. And the brazen altar, which was before Jehovah, he brought from the forefront of the house, from between his altar and the house of Jehovah, and put it on the north side of his altar. And king Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt-offering, and the evening meal-offering, and the king’s burnt-offering, and his meal-offering, with the burnt-offering of all the people of the land, and their meal-offering, and their drink-offerings; and sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt-offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: but the brazen altar shall be for me to inquire by.

The fantastic Altar that King Solomon had built and upon which the sacrifices were offered was not good enough for wicked King Ahaz. He preferred a pagan altar that he had seen in a temple in Damascus. He took careful note as to the construction of the Damascus altar and sent the plans and blueprints down to the high priest, Urijah. It was built and, in doing so, Solomon’s altar was set aside, and a pagan altar replaced it. Ahaz, too, was guilty of profaning the Temple.

Another king who desecrated the Temple was the grandson of Ahaz, King Manasseh. His desecration is recorded in 2 Kings 21:1–6: Manasseh was twelve years when he began to reign; and he reigned five and fifty years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Hephzibah. And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, after the abominations of the nations whom Jehovah cast out before the children of Israel. For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he reared up altars for Baal, and made an Asherah, as did Ahab king of Israel, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them. And he built altars in the house of Jehovah, whereof Jehovah said, In Jerusalem will I put my name. And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of Jehovah. And he made his son to pass through the fire, and practised augury, and used enchantments, and dealt with them that had familiar spirits, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger.

Manasseh worshipped the pseudoscience of astrology. For each sign of the zodiac, he had a separate altar within the court area of the Temple of the Lord, and he began to worship pagan gods within the confines of the Jewish Temple itself. Among the various desecrations of the House of God, Manasseh’s was by far the worst, because he, for all practical purposes, turned the Temple into a pagan worship center. There were four different types of pagan worship observed in the Temple Compound as a result of Manasseh’s actions. Attacks Against the Temple

On several occasions there were attacks against the Temple, desecrating it either by plunder or by the taking of tribute from the Temple treasury. The very first one to plunder the Temple was Pharaoh Shishak of Egypt. Prophetic Warnings Regarding the Temple

Although the Temple of Solomon was often desecrated by Judah’s extreme wickedness, they nevertheless looked to the Temple as a place of security. When King Sennacherib of Assyria invaded the Land of Judah, all of Judah’s fortified cities collapsed. There was nothing left of Judah whatsoever. However, Sennacherib failed to take over Jerusalem. The people concluded from the failure of Sennacherib’s invasion that as long as God’s Temple was in Jerusalem, Jerusalem could never be taken nor destroyed. The Message of Micah

Two prophets spoke boldly against this false security. First came the prophet Micah, who prophesied of the future destruction of the Temple in Micah 3:11–12: The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet they lean upon Jehovah, and say, Is not Jehovah in the midst of us? no evil shall come upon us. Hence, they became more and more wicked. Yet Micah warned that this Temple in which they placed their sense of security would become nothing but a forest, totally overgrown, without even a building left.

2. The Message of Jeremiah

This was picked up by the Prophet Jeremiah, who was able to see the destruction of Solomon’s Temple. The prophet speaks against the concept of the security of the Temple in Jeremiah 7:3–4: Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. Otherwise, judgment would come. They were not to trust in the words of the false prophets who were saying: the temple of Jehovah. They were being taught that, by virtue of the Temple’s being in Jerusalem, Jerusalem was indestructible. Jeremiah began to warn them that this was not so; unless they repented they would be destroyed.

Then Jeremiah pointed to the lesson of Shiloh in Jeremiah 7:12–15: But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I caused my name to dwell at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel. It remained desolate even until Jeremiah’s day. So Jeremiah pointed this out to Israel and told them to look at the lesson of Shiloh. The fact that the Tabernacle was in Shiloh did not make Shiloh indestructible. In fact, Shiloh was indeed destroyed because of Israel’s sinfulness. The Work Begins

When Zerubbabel and Ezra began leading the migrations back to the Land, one of the first things to be rebuilt for the new Temple was the Altar, even before laying the foundations for the Temple itself according to Ezra 3:1–3: And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem. Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt-offerings thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God. And they set the altar upon its base; for fear was upon them because of the peoples of the countries: and they offered burnt-offerings thereon unto Jehovah, even burnt-offerings morning and evening.

Since the Altar of Sacrifice was outside the Temple building, not inside, apparently the Jews felt they should build the Altar first in order to reinstitute the sacrificial system. It was by means of blood sacrifices that the Mosaic Law said one was to approach God. But for the past seventy years, there had been no blood sacrifices, so there had been no real possibility of approach to God in accordance with Mosaic Law. In order to reestablish this connection with the Lord, the Altar was rebuilt.

Once the altar was rebuilt and the sacrificial system had been re-instituted, they commenced with the building of the Temple itself. The beginning of the rebuilding of the Temple by the laying of the foundations is found in Ezra 3:8–13. The foundations were laid, and then a great feast was proclaimed in verses 8–10: Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the rest of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem, and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to have the oversight of the work of the house of Jehovah. Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to have oversight of the workmen in the house of God: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brethren the Levites. And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of Jehovah, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise Jehovah, after the order of David king of Israel.

This feast was accompanied by both rejoicing and weeping in verses 11–13: And they sang one to another in praising and giving thanks unto Jehovah, saying, For he is good, for his lovingkindness endures for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised Jehovah, because the foundation of the house of Jehovah was laid. But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ houses, the old men that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy: so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout for joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.

The younger men rejoiced greatly to see their Temple beginning to be rebuilt, as symbolized by the completion of the foundations. However, among those who had returned from Babylon were some very old men who still remembered the First Temple in all its glory. There was no real comparison between the small foundation rebuilt by Zerubbabel and the massive foundation and Temple that Solomon had built. The older generation wept rather than rejoiced because, to them, the Second Temple was of little value in comparison to the original one. Thus, with the foundations laid, there was both weeping and rejoicing.

b. The Work is Interrupted

But no sooner had the foundation been laid than the Jews received opposition from their enemies. In his first chapter, Haggai encourages and exhorts the people to rise up and finish the work they have begun. One example can be found in Haggai 1:2: Thus speaks Jehovah of hosts, saying, This people say, It is time for us to come, the time for Jehovah’s house to be built.

Another example is Haggai 1:7–8: Thus says Jehovah of hosts: Consider your ways. For as we noted earlier, there were many Jews still living from the days of Solomon’s Temple who were not impressed with the new foundation, and they were somewhat discouraging to those who were trying to rebuild the Temple.

Thus, Haggai spoke directly on the issue of what appears to be the inferiority of Zerubbabel’s Temple as compared to Solomon’s Temple in Haggai 2:1–9: In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying, Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying, Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes as nothing? Hence, they are not to be discouraged regardless of what the older men might say about the superiority of the First Temple. In its beginnings, the Zerubbabel Temple would indeed be inferior, but later, the glory that would be seen in this Temple would far exceed that of Solomon’s Temple!

(2) The Message of Zechariah

The prophecies of Zechariah came to back up the prophecies of Haggai. After he captured Jerusalem, he entered into the Holy of Holies; this, of course, was permissible only by the Jewish high priest. After Pompey, in the year 54 b.c., another Roman General named Crassus plundered the Temple of all its gold and emptied the Temple treasury.

Hence, in the first phase of the Second Temple, the Zerubbabel phase, the Temple was plundered on at least two or three occasions.

B. The Renovation

When Herod was declared king of Judea by the Roman authorities in the year 20 b.c., he promised the Jews to completely renovate their Temple, which had become badly dilapidated after five centuries. The Jews, of course, did not trust Herod and made him gather all the materials together before they would allow him to even touch the Temple. And even then, they would allow him to do it only one part at a time to make sure that he did not destroy the whole Temple first and then refuse to do any rebuilding. Therefore, in the year 20 b.c., the work was begun. The new Temple building itself took only one-and-a-half years to complete. But the outer courts and the buildings of the outer courts took another eighty years to finish. The finished product was on such a grand scale that it exceeded the beauty of Solomon’s Temple, fulfilling the prophecy of Haggai 2.

When the Messiah began His ministry in the year a.d. 27, the outer buildings were already forty-six years in the making. It was finally completed in the year a.d. 64, only a mere six years before the whole area was destroyed by the Romans. Thus, as we come to the time in the life of the Messiah, the new Temple building had been standing for several decades whereas the buildings of the outer court were only about half complete.

2. The Second Temple in the Life of the Messiah

It is this Herodian phase of the Second Temple that the Messiah comes in contact with in the course of His lifetime. A number of key events occurred in relationship to the Temple. It was in this Temple that Zacharias received his vision from the angel in Luke 1:8–23, who told him that he would have a son who was to become John the Baptist. It was in the Temple that the baby Jesus was dedicated by His parents, and where Simeon and Anna prophesied and authenticated His Messiahship in Luke 2:22–39. It was in this Temple Compound that Yeshua, at the age of twelve, was able to confound the doctors of the Law with His knowledge in Luke 2:41–51.

When Jesus began His ministry, He began by cleansing the Temple area for the first time in John 2:13–22. In this very same Temple, He declared His equality with God in John 5:14–29. It was at this time that He cleansed the Temple for the second time according to Matthew 21:12–17, and so Jesus ended His ministry the same way He began: with the cleansing of the Temple. It was in the Temple Compound that His authority was questioned by various leaders of Israel in Matthew 21:23–22:46. In this Temple area, He denounced the Pharisees for leading the nation astray in Matthew 23:1–38.

One of the greatest events connecting the life of the Messiah with this Temple was at the time of the Crucifixion. When Yeshua died, the thick veil that separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place was torn in two from top to bottom. The Second Temple in the Book of Acts

The Temple played a part in the events of the Book of Acts as well. According to Acts 2:46–47, the many Jewish believers of the early Church continued to worship in this Temple. It was in the Temple area that Peter and John healed the lame man, providing an opportunity for Peter to preach his sermon by which many more Jews were saved in Acts 3:1–26.

Finally, in Acts 21:27–36, it was in the Temple Compound that Paul was arrested, an act that eventually brought him to the City of Rome.

C. The Destruction of the Second Temple

Like the First Temple, the Second Temple was also destroyed because of Israel’s sins, in this case, the sin of rejecting the Messiahship of Jesus. Also like Solomon’s Temple, the Second Temple was not destroyed before certain prophecies regarding its destruction were given.

One of these prophecies is found in the Old Testament in Daniel 9:26: And after threescore and two weeks shall the anointed one be cut off, and shall have nothing: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and even unto the end shall be war; desolations are determined.

In this passage, Daniel clearly prophesied that the Second Temple, soon to be rebuilt by Zerubbabel, would eventually suffer destruction by an invasion like the First Temple had. Both the city and the sanctuary were to be destroyed.

While Daniel prophesied the destruction of the Second Temple, he did not state the reason for its destruction. But in the closing days of His ministry, Yeshua gave two predictions of the Temple’s destruction.

The first is found in Matthew 23:37–39: O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killed the prophets, and stoned them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.

These words were spoken the very last time that Jesus was in the Temple area. It was a lamentation. He pointed out the fact that He often wanted to have the people of Israel regathered and to give them the special messianic protection promised by the Jewish prophets. However, the leaders of Israel rejected Him and, in that sense, “willed it not.” Therefore, the key sin that brought about the destruction of the Second Temple was that of rejecting the Messiahship of Yeshua. Because of this sin, He declared that their house would be left desolate.

He adds to this a second prophecy, found in Matthew 24:1–2: And Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way; and his disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple. But he answered and said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

As He was leaving the Temple area after His declaration of Matthew 23, the disciples began pointing to the construction of magnificent new buildings that had been begun by Herod the Great. Yet Jesus made a dramatic prophecy concerning this Temple: that not one stone would be left on top of another that would not be totally thrown down. Yeshua clearly predicted the coming destruction of the Second Temple.

These prophecies were fulfilled some forty years after the Messiah made these statements. In the year a.d. 66, the Jews revolted against Rome, bringing about the First Roman-Jewish War. After three years of brutal fighting, in the year a.d. 68., the Roman forces began a siege of Jerusalem that lasted two years. Then, in the year a.d. 70, the Romans were finally able to breach the walls and the Second Temple was destroyed.

Once again, the Temple was gone and the Jews no longer had a place of sacrifice. But unlike the period of the Babylonian captivity when no alternate approach to God was available, forty years before the destruction of the Second Temple, God had provided another approach for His people. The final sacrifice for sin was that of Jesus the Messiah, and the Jews were to come to God by means of the Messiah, no longer by means of blood sacrifices.

III. The Tribulation Temple

The next Temple is the first of the two prophetic Temples of the future. It is the Temple, which will be involved with the period of the Great Tribulation. Though there is not a great deal of information about the Tribulation Temple, there is enough revelation given for us to be able to come to some very important conclusions.

A. The Building of the Tribulation Temple

The key passage that speaks about the building of the Temple for the Tribulation is given in Isaiah 66:1–6: Thus says Jehovah, Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: what manner of house will ye build unto me? and what place shall be my rest? For all these things has my hand made, and so all these things came to be, says Jehovah: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and that trembles at my word. He that kills an ox is as he that slays a man; he that sacrifices a lamb, as he that breaks a dog’s neck; he that offers an oblation, as he that offers swine’s blood; he that burns frankincense, as he that blesses an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations: I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spoke, they did not hear: but they did that which was evil in mine eyes, and chose that wherein I delighted not. Hear the word of Jehovah, ye that tremble at his word: Your brethren that hate you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, have said, Let Jehovah be glorified, that we may see your joy; but it is they that shall be put to shame. A voice of tumult from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of Jehovah that renders recompense to his enemies.

This passage speaks of a Temple that God does not sanction. It is in light of this fact that we are able to conclude which Temple Isaiah is speaking of, for God did sanction both Solomon’s Temple and the Second Temple of the past. God Himself will be involved in the rebuilding of the Fourth Temple of the Millennium and, therefore, it too is sanctioned by God. However, since this passage speaks of a Temple, which God refuses to sanction, we have to conclude that only one Temple will fit this description: the Temple of the Great Tribulation Period.

Therefore, this passage begins with a protest from God, who makes it clear in verse 1, that no house that Israel builds at this time will be acceptable, for God will not come and reside in it as He resided in the First Temple and He will reside again in the Fourth Temple. According to verse 2, what God will require at this time is not a new house, but faith. In verse 3, He declares that He will not accept sacrifices, and the very fact that they will build this Temple shows their failure in verse 4 to listen to God’s Word and come to God through faith in Yeshua the Messiah. Then in verse 5, Isaiah has a word of encouragement to those faithful Jews who will not participate in the rebuilding of the Temple, but who are seeking to do God’s will. Thus, we know there is going to be a faithful Remnant who will not participate or be involved in the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple for the Great Tribulation period. Finally, in verse 6, Isaiah says that this new Temple will result only in judgment. This Temple will not result in forgiveness of sin; it will not result in an acceptable worship; it will result only in judgment from God.

Isaiah writes that there will be a Temple rebuilt that will not receive the sanction of God. But Isaiah says nothing about the timing of this Temple, only that some day it will be built. However, we have answers to many questions regarding this Temple from other Scriptures.

B. The Beginning

Much more revelation is given in the Scriptures regarding how this Third Temple will become an abomination. The beginning of this Abomination of Desolation is given in Daniel 9:27: And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease; and upon the wing of abominations shall come one that makes desolate; and even unto the full end, and that determined, shall wrath be poured out upon the desolate.

This passage speaks of the breaking of the covenant between Israel and the Antichrist in the middle of the Tribulation.

Regarding the Jewish Temple, there are two key results of the breaking of the covenant. First of all, there is a cessation of all sacrifices. The fact that these sacrifices are stopped in the middle of the Tribulation tells us that they have been going on for some time. The key timing element, then, regarding the Temple of the Tribulation, is that in the middle of the Tribulation it is already standing and functioning, and has been functioning for at least a little while. This means that either the Tribulation Temple has to be rebuilt during the first half of the Tribulation or sometime before the Tribulation. This is as close as we can come to the timing of the rebuilding of the Tribulation Temple. The Bible just does not give us enough information to come to a specific conclusion regarding the timing.

The second result of the breaking of the covenant is the Abomination of Desolation. Daniel does not tell us exactly what the Abomination of Desolation is here; he only tells us that it will occur at this time.

b. The Duration

The next passage that deals with this is found in Daniel 12:11: And from the time that the continual brunt offering shall be taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

This passage tells us that the Abomination of Desolation will last a total of 1,290 days. This is thirty days beyond the ending of the Tribulation. For some reason, the Abomination of Desolation is allowed to continue thirty days beyond the end of the Tribulation itself. Again, no clue is given here as to what the Abomination of Desolation actually is.

c. The Warning Sign

The next passage that speaks of the Abomination of Desolation is found in Matthew 24:15–16: When therefore ye see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let him that reads understand), then let them that are in Judaea flee unto the mountains.

In this passage, Jesus gives a warning sign to the Jews who will be living in the middle of the Tribulation. The warning is that, just as soon as they see or hear of the Abomination of Desolation, they are to get out of Israel, and they must get out of Israel very quickly. Again, we are told nothing as to what the Abomination of Desolation is.

d. The Take-Over by the Gentiles

The next passage of Scripture that says something about this whole area is Revelation 11:1–2: And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and one said, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. And the court which is without the temple leave without, and measure it not; for it has been given unto the nations: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

This passage is similar to that which is found in Daniel 9:27. The normal functioning of the Tribulation Temple is stopped, for it is taken over by the Gentiles, and the Gentiles are able to rule the Tribulation Temple for a period of 3½ years. Just as in Daniel 9:27, Revelation 11:1–2 tells us that the Temple will be given over to the Gentiles in the middle of the Tribulation, and it will be desolated for 3½ years. But again, nothing in this passage tells us what the Abomination of Desolation is.

2. The Stages of the Abomination of Desolation

Now we finally come to realize what the Abomination of Desolation actually is. The Abomination of Desolation involves two key stages.

a. The First Stage

The first stage of the Abomination of Desolation is found in 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4: let no man beguile you in any wise: for it will not be, except the falling away come first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, he that opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshipped; so that he sits in the temple of God, setting himself forth as God.

In the first stage of the Abomination of Desolation, after the Antichrist takes over the Jewish Temple as prophesied in Daniel 9:27 and Revelation 11:1–2, he will set up a throne in the Holy of Holies of this Third Temple and declare himself to be the one true God. This, then, is the Abomination of Desolation.

The reason this is given the title “Abomination of Desolation” is the fact that this whole episode will be inspired by Satan himself according to 2 Thessalonians 2:8–10: And then shall be revealed the lawless one, whom the Lord Jesus shall slay with the breath of his mouth, and bring to nought by the manifestation of his coming; even he, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

The declaration of deity by the Antichrist was stated by Paul to be satanically inspired and energized. It will be accompanied by miraculous signs aiming to deceive the world, and this work of destruction will create a great turning of mankind to the acceptance of the Antichrist as the real true God.

Further light on this Abomination of Desolation in its first stage is found in Revelation 13:3–4: And I saw one of his heads as though it had been smitten unto death; and his death stroke was healed: and the whole earth wondered after the beast; and they worshipped the dragon, because he gave his authority unto the beast; and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? and who is able to war with him?

The Antichrist succeeds in convincing the masses of humanity of his deity, and people all over the world begin to worship him. This is also made clear in Revelation 13:8.

Therefore, in the first stage of the Abomination of Desolation, the Antichrist takes over the Jewish Temple; sits down in the Holy of Holies; and declares himself to be God. The fact that this will be accompanied by signs, wonders, and miracles will deceive the masses of mankind into accepting the deity of the Antichrist.

b. The Second Stage

The second stage of the Abomination of Desolation is given in Revelation 13:11–15: And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like unto a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his sight. And he makes the earth and them that dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose death stroke was healed. And he does great signs, that he should even make fire to come out of heaven upon the earth in the sight of men. And he deceives them that dwell on the earth by reason of the signs which it was given him to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast who had the stoke of the sword and lived. And it was given unto him to give breath to it, even to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as should not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

The Antichrist, of course, does not remain in the Holy of Holies forever since his capitol will be elsewhere. But in order to keep the Temple as the center of the worship of himself, the Antichrist has his false prophet make an image, which is given life and is set in the Holy of Holies of this Jewish Temple. This, then, becomes the second stage of the Abomination of Desolation: the image of the Antichrist, standing in the Holy of Holies. This is what Yeshua referred to when He said: the abomination of desolation … standing in the holy place in Matthew 24:15. Furthermore as Daniel 12:11 stated, this image will be allowed to remain within the Holy of Holies for a total of 1,290 days, thirty days beyond the close of the Tribulation.

C. The Destruction of the Third Temple

We are not clearly told just how this Temple will be destroyed, but there can be little doubt that it will be greatly affected by the earthquake at the time of the Second Coming of the Messiah, recorded in Zechariah 14:4: And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; and the mount of Olives shall be cleft in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

Thirty days after this earthquake, the image will be removed and destroyed, thus bringing an end to the Abomination of Desolation. The Millennial Temple

The Fourth and final Temple of the Scriptures is referred to as the Millennial Temple or the Temple of the Messianic Age. In various parts of Scripture, we are given some details regarding the Temple that will stand during the 1,000-year reign of the Messiah. Because of the tremendous geographical and topographical changes in the Land of Israel during the Kingdom, we should not think that the Temple will be rebuilt on the exact same spot as the other three Temples were. The Bible makes it clear that things will be radically different for the Kingdom.

A. The Mountain of Jehovah’s House

The prophets make it very clear that, in the middle of the Land, a very high mountain will be grown until it becomes the highest mountain in the world. From all these measurements, it is evident that the Millennial Temple will be the largest Temple of them all, for it will be roughly one mile square. The area of the present Temple site is not large enough to hold a Temple of this great size, thus requiring some major geographical changes for this huge, one mile square Temple to stand.

The fourth section, Ezekiel 42:1–14, describes the chambers of the outer court.

The fifth section, verses 15–20, describes the outer wall.

In the sixth section, Ezekiel 43:1–9, Ezekiel records the return of the Shechinah Glory. Just as the Shechinah Glory authenticated and sanctioned Solomon’s Temple, in verses 1–5 it will also sanction this Temple by its return from the same direction that it left. Therefore, the Shechinah Glory returns to Israel, to this Temple, and this is followed by the first message of the Shechinah in verses 6–9. The Shechinah Glory promises to dwell in the midst of the children of Israel forever.

In the seventh section, Ezekiel 43:10–12, the description is interrupted, where Ezekiel the Prophet is commissioned to point out the sinfulness of Israel in his day.

But then in the eighth section, Ezekiel 43:13–27, continues with a description of the Altar. We are first given the measure of the Altar in verses 13–17, and then a description of the consecration of the Altar for the Millennial Temple in verses 18–27.

3. The Priesthood and Sacrificial System of the Millennial Temple—Ezekiel 44:1–46:24

These three chapters are concerned with various laws regulating the millennial system of priesthood and sacrifices. While there are similarities with the commandments of the Law of Moses, there are also some marked differences. For this reason, the millennial system of priesthood and sacrifices must not be viewed as a reinstitution of the Law of Moses, which ended permanently, and forever with the death of the Messiah. During the Messianic Age, a whole new system of law will be instituted. This particular passage has seven major sections dealing with this theme.

The first section, Ezekiel 44:1–3, concerns the law of the outer eastern gate. In verse 1, we are told that the eastern gate will be shut at the beginning of the Millennium, never to be reopened again throughout the Kingdom. The reason for this, given in verse 2, is the fact that the Shechinah Glory returned by the eastern gate, never to leave Israel again. The closing of the outer eastern gate signifies the fact that the Shechinah will not depart from Israel anymore. Next, we are given a description in verse 3 of the Prince and His authority and ministry in relationship to this outer eastern gate.

It should be noted at this point that these words have nothing to do with the present outer eastern gate of Jerusalem, known as the Golden Gate today. In its context, this passage speaks not of Jerusalem today, but of the Temple gate in the Millennium.

In the second section, verses 4–8, since the Shechinah Glory is now permanently with Israel, as signified by the shutting of the eastern gate, we next have the second message of the Shechinah, which again points out Israel’s sins.

The third section, verses 9–14, describes the law of the Levites, who are to be the caretakers of the Temple.

The fourth section, verses 15–31, concerns the duties of the sons of Zadok, who will be responsible for the sacrifices during the Kingdom. According to Isaiah 66:21, there will also be Gentile priests.

The fifth section, Ezekiel 45:1–8, is a further description of the mountain of Jehovah’s House itself. From previous references, we have noted that it will be the highest mountain in the world, somewhere on this mountain the Millennial Temple will stand, and on the south side of this mountain will be the frame of the city that Ezekiel saw. But now we are given further descriptions of what is on top of this mountain.

In this passage, we are told that this high mountain will have a flat plateau on top, and the flat plateau will be fifty miles square. This fifty-mile-square area will itself be divided into three sections. The northern section will be twenty miles by fifty miles. In the very center of this section will stand the Millennial Temple, which will be one mile square. The rest of the area will be living quarters for the sons of Zadok, who are responsible for the sacrifices according to verses 1–4. The second section will also be twenty miles by fifty miles, and this will be the place for the Tribe of Levi, who will serve as the caretakers of the Temple according to verse 5. In verse 6, the southern side will be ten miles by fifty miles. In the middle of the southern side, ten miles by ten miles, will be the city that Ezekiel saw: the Millennial Jerusalem. Thus we know that the Millennial Jerusalem will be ten miles square, and from this city Jesus will reign. Verses 7–8 state that on each side of this city there is an area ten miles by twenty miles which will be for growing food for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Thus, after so many hints and revelations, we are given the details of what will be on top of this very high mountain. We also note that the Millennial Temple will not be in the midst of the City of Jerusalem, but it will be separated by many miles. For the Temple itself will be on the north side of this high mountain, whereas Jerusalem will be on the southern side of this high mountain.

Having described the details of the holy mountain, the sixth section, Ezekiel 45:9–46:18, describes the duties of the Prince, David. This includes the Law of Measurements and the Laws of Offering in verses 9–12. Regarding the Laws of the Offering, there are some general instructions in verses 13–17, followed by a number of specifics among which are the new year offerings in verses 18–20, the Passover offering in verses 21–24, the Feast of Tabernacles offering in verse 25. Then the Sabbath offering Ezekiel 46:1–5, the New Moon offerings in verses 6–8, special festival offerings in verses 9–12, and the daily sacrifices in verses 13–15. This section concludes with the rights of the Prince in verses 16–18.

The seventh section, Ezekiel 46:19–24, concerns the laws regarding the boiling of the sacrifices.

Regarding the matter of the Feast of Tabernacles, this will be one festival required not only by the Jews, but by all Gentile nations as Zechariah 14:16–19 makes clear. According to the prophecy of Zechariah, any Gentile nation, such as Egypt, that refuses to come to the Temple for the Feast of Tabernacles will have rain withheld from them for that year. Consequently, punishment will be meted out to any nation that rejects attending the Feast of Tabernacles.

4. The Millennial River—Ezekiel 47:1–12

From the front part of the Temple, by the threshold of the door and the Altar in front of it, a river will gush out. We are told that these waters will move southward, eventually heading toward the area of the Dead Sea. However, we know from other Scriptures, that the river bursting forth from the Temple on the north side of this holy mountain does not go directly to the Dead Sea, but moves southward first to Jerusalem. A parallel passage marking the Temple as the beginning of this millennial river is given in Joel 3:18.

The fact that this river comes from the Temple and first goes down to Jerusalem is made clear from Zechariah 14:8. Here, we learn that the river that begins in the Temple of Jerusalem moves southward until it comes to the City of Jerusalem and then it divides into two branches. The western branch moves down the mountain and empties into the Mediterranean Sea. But the eastern branch moves into the Dead Sea and empties there, thus making the Dead Sea a living sea, bringing the results spelled out in Ezekiel 47:8–10.

5. The Missing Piece of Furniture

Another feature about the Millennial Temple concerns one missing element of its furniture. Though it appears that the Millennial Temple will have the same furnishings as the previous Temples, especially the First Temple, one item will be missing. In the Millennial Temple there will be no Ark of the Covenant, for Jeremiah 3:16 states that the Ark of the Covenant will not be rebuilt for the Millennial Temple. There will be no Ark of the Covenant within the Holy of Holies of the Temple. The Shechinah Glory will be there, but not the Ark of the Covenant. Since Yeshua Himself will be reigning from Jerusalem, there will no longer be any need for the Ark of the Covenant.

C. The Destruction of the Millennial Temple

Although this Fourth Temple is the best of them all, even this Temple will not be eternal; it will also disappear. The disappearance of the Millennial Temple will come at the same time as the disappearance of the present heavens and earth, recorded in two portions of the Book of Revelation. First, in Revelation 21:1–2, we read how God will destroy the old order. This is also spelled out in Rev. 20:11. He will then create a new order. According to Revelation 21:22, the new order, the Eternal State, will not have a Temple. Revelation 21:22 reads: And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God the Almighty, and the Lamb, are the temple thereof.

By virtue of the fact that the entire Trinity will dwell with man, there will no longer be a need for any kind of Temple. For this reason, the Millennial Temple, too, will pass away and, in the Eternal Order, there will be no Temple any longer.

What a glorious day that will be!

And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and Jehovah had given him rest from all his enemies round about, that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within curtains.
