Now we beseech you, brethren, touching the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together unto him; to the end that ye be not quickly shaken from your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by<\/em><\/span> spirit, or by word, or by epistle as from us, as that the day of the Lord is just at hand<\/em><\/p>\n

2 Thessalonians 2:1\u20132<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

The well known passage of 2 Thessalonians 2:1\u201312<\/a> must be discussed in any study dealing<\/span> with eschatology. There has been much debate as to the exact point or points Paul wished to make, the identity of \u201cthe restrainer,\u201d and exactly what is the relationship between the Antichrist and the restrainer.<\/span><\/p>\n

In dealing with this passage, perhaps it would be best to summarize the main points as follows: first, to comfort the believers of Thessalonica, letting them know that they are not in the<\/span> Tribulation, nor has the Tribulation arrived; secondly, to teach that there will be two separate revelations of the Antichrist at different points in time; and thirdly, that two things are being restrained: the mystery of lawlessness in general now, and the Antichrist specifically in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next step in dealing with this passage is to proceed to an analysis of the text, beginning with so<\/span>me background information. After Paul left Thessalonica, some false teachers came in apparently teaching a posttribulational doctrine and stating that the believers were now in the Tribulation.<\/p>\n

Now we<\/em><\/span> beseech you, brethren, touching the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together unto him; to the end that ye be not quickly shaken from your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by spirit, or <\/em><\/span>by word, or by epistle as from us, as that the day of the Lord is just at hand; let no man beguile you in any wise: for it will not be, except the falling away come first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, he that opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshipped; so that he sits in the temple of God, setting himself forth as God.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In verses 1<\/span>\u20132<\/a>, the Thessalonians were troubled that the day of the Lord, the most common title for the Great Tribulation, had already arrived. This was especially true since, in the first epistle, he taught them<\/span> a Pretribulation Rapture.<\/p>\n

In verse 3<\/a>, Paul stated that the Tribulation could not have come yet because two events had not yet occurred. The first is the apostasy of the Church, and the second event i<\/span>s the revelation of the man of sin or the son of perdition. This revelation of the identity of the Antichrist that precedes the Tribulation will be for the believers living at that time. While it is clear that the Rapture of Church sa<\/span>ints will also occur before the Tribulation, the Scriptures do not state exactly low long before the Tribulation the Rapture occurs; it may be immediately before or it may be years before. Therefore, the revelation to believers before the Tribulation may be to the Church or it may be to a new generation of believers who will have accepted the gospel after the Rapture of the Church. Whoever the believers may be at that time, they w<\/span>ill receive this revelation as to the identity of the Antichrist.<\/span><\/p>\n

This text does not state exactly how the revelation will come, but<\/span> other Scriptures indicate that it may come because of two things. First, it is clear from Daniel 9:27<\/a> that the Tribulation will begin with the signing of a seven-year covenant between Israel and the <\/span>Antichrist. When this forthcoming covenant is announced, believers may become aware of the identity of the Antichrist. But secondly, it is also possible that believers will deduce who he is by the numerical value of the Antichrist\u2019s name, which will be 666.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two things are then stated concerning this Antichrist in verse 4<\/a>. First, he will be opposed to God and to all objects of veneration. Secondly,<\/span> he will take over the Jewish Temple and declare himself to be god and will call all men to worship him. This event will occur in the middle of the Tribulation in conjunction with the Abomination of Desolation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Verses 5\u20137<\/a> are somewhat parenthetical: Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know that which restrains, to the end that he may be revealed in h<\/em><\/span>is own season. For the mystery of lawlessness does already work: only there is one that restrains now, until he be taken out of the way.<\/em><\/p>\n

In verse 5<\/a>, Paul reminds his readers of things he had taught th<\/span>em while he was still with them. The key thing he had taught them in verse 6<\/a> was the fact that the takeover of the Jewish Temple and the self-declaration of deity will be restrained, and until the res<\/span>trainer is removed, the events of verse 4<\/a> cannot occur. The Antichrist will not gain full political and religious control until he wars against the ten kings and kills three of them. The other seven k<\/span>ings will then submit to him. It is only when the last of these three kings has been killed, leading to complete submission of the other seven kings, that the Antichrist will be free to take over full global dictatorship and to carry out the events of verse <\/span>4<\/a>. Consequently, the last restrainer of the Antichrist will be the last of the three kings and the government which he represents.<\/p>\n

Then Paul r<\/span>eminds his readers in verse 7<\/a> that the mystery of lawlessness is already working and is even then being restrained. The Holy Spirit is never described as restraining. The task of restraining evil was <\/span>given to human government under the Noahic Covenant in Genesis 9:1\u201317<\/a> and this basic doctrinal truth was reiterated by Paul in Romans 13:1\u20137<\/a>. On one hand, human government is even now restraining lawl<\/span>essness. On the other hand, the government of the last of the three kings will restrain the Antichrist, the lawless one, until the middle of the Tribulation.<\/p>\n

After the parenthetical reminder of verses<\/span> 5\u20137<\/a>, Paul returns to his discussion of the Antichrist in verses 8\u201312<\/a>: And then shall be revealed the lawless one, whom the Lord Jesus shall slay with the breath of his mouth, and bring to nought by t<\/em><\/span>he manifestation of his coming; even he, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God sends them a working of error, that<\/em><\/span> they should believe a lie: that they all might be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

According to verse 8a<\/a>, the Abomination of Desolation<\/em> of verse 4<\/a> will serve as the second revelation of the Antichrist. While the first revelation wi<\/span>ll be to the believers before the Tribulation, the second revelation in the middle of the Tribulation will be to Israel. By the very act of the Abomination of Desolation<\/em>, the Antichrist will be reveal<\/span>ed as truly being the lawless one, and then Israel can realize with whom they have made their seven year covenant. The act of the Abomination of Desolation is clearly stated by Yeshua (Jesus) to be a sign to Israel in <\/span>Matthew 24:15\u201322<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Paul then proceeds to give further facts regarding the Antichrist. First, he will ultimately be destroyed by the Second Coming of the Messiah in verse 8b<\/a>. Secondly,<\/span> he is the one who will be totally energized by Satan and will be able to do miracles in verse 9<\/a>, for the purpose of world-wide deception. Thirdly, in verse 10<\/a>, he will call all men to worship him. An<\/span>d fourthly, the ones who will be deceived by him and his counterfeit signs are those who have already rejected the gospel of the Yeshua the Messiah in verses 11\u201312<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These verses have often been taken <\/span>to mean that those who heard the gospel before the Rapture but who did not believe will not have the opportunity to be saved after the Rapture and during the Tribulation. However, the passage itself places the rejection of the gospel d<\/span>uring the Tribulation itself, rather than before it.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that, during the first half of the Tribulation, there will be a world wide preaching of the g<\/span>ospel by the 144,000 Jews (Mat. 24:14<\/a>; Rev. 7<\/a>). While myriads will accept the gospel, many more will not. Because these many will refuse to respond to the preaching of the 144,000 during the first hal<\/span>f of the Tribulation, they will be deceived by the Antichrist and will begin to worship him during the second half of the Tribulation. The initial act of worshipping the Antichrist will involve accepting the mark of 666. Once this mark is taken, the individual will have reached the point of no return and will not have the opportunity to be saved from th<\/span>en on (Rev. 14:9\u201312<\/a>).<\/p>\n
