class="lang-en">Introduction

This study concerns the program of the Tribulation as it relates to God’s program for the Jewish people. It will be introduced by quoting Deuteronomy 32:8–9: When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, When he separated the children of men, He set the bounds of the peoples According to the number of the children of Israel. For Jehovah’s portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

God has an overall prophetic program that is often subdivided into three distinct plans: first, God’s plan for the Church; secondly, His plan for the Gentile nations; and thirdly, His plan for the nation of Israel. But regardless of whether one speaks of God’s plan for Israel, the Church, or the Gentile nations, all three center around the Jewish people. Moses writes that this is true to the extent that when God in His providence laid out what would become the boundaries of various nations, He somehow reckoned into that accounting the number of Jews who would play a role in that nation’s history. This means that when God mapped out what would become the borders of the United States of America, He somehow reckoned into His accounting the number of Jews who would play a part in American history: For Jehovah’s portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

In verse 8, God is referred to as the Most High. According to Genesis 14, whenever God is referred to as the Most High, He is emphasized as the possessor of the heavens and the earth. To Make an End of Wickedness and Wicked Ones

The first purpose of the Tribulation is found in two key passages: Isaiah 13:9 and 24:19–20. And I saw another angel ascend from the sunrising, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a great voice to the four angels to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we shall have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads. And I heard the number of them that were sealed, a hundred and forty and four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the children of Israel: Of the tribe of Judah were sealed twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand; Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.

The beginning words, After this, are not chronological in this case, but merely the next vision John sees. In verses 1–3, the four angels that are commissioned to bring judgment on the earth are commanded to hold off their destruction until a specific number of servants are sealed. Sealing is done for two reasons: service and protection. Both reasons apply here. These are the ones who will proclaim the message of the gospel in the Tribulation. The mention of the four winds shows that these 144,000 Jewish evangelists will come from all parts of the world, not only from Israel.

In verses 4–8, the identification of those who are sealed is clearly specified as 144,000 Jews. To make it even more clear, twelve tribes are listed with the statement that 12,000 are chosen from each tribe. By means of these 144,000 Jewish evangelists, God will bring about the worldwide revival and accomplish another goal of the Tribulation.

Looking at all this purely from a human perspective, if one wanted to conduct a worldwide revival in a very short period of time, for this revival will occur during the first 3½ years of the Tribulation, one could not think of a better group of people to use than the Jewish people. However, coming from a Jewish believer in Jesus, that may not sound very objective, so the following are some objective reasons why this would certainly be true.

If one looks at the world missionary situation today, one of the things he will discover is that the vast majority of missionaries are Americans. If one begins interviewing these missionaries to find out how much time was spent in training before they were comfortably proclaiming the Word of God in a land that is not their own, he would discover that they had to train for three or four years at a Bible institute or Bible college. If they became believers some time after college, they had to study three or four years at a seminary. While the Bible institute, college, or seminary graduate is trained to proclaim the Word in this nation or some other English speaking nation, he is not prepared to do so on a foreign field. The next two, three, maybe four years must be spent in language study. The average American missionary on the foreign field must spend approximately six years in training before he is proclaiming the Word in a language not his own. This worldwide revival by the preaching of the gospel will occur in only 3½ years and there is just not that much time for training. One distinct advantage of using Jewish people is that Jews are dispersed all over the world. Every one of the world’s major languages, and a great number of the world’s minor languages, are spoken by some Jews somewhere. Except for American Jewry, most Jews are at least bilingual. The author is bilingual, and the author’s parents are multi lingual, speaking five languages each.

Another advantage of using Jewish evangelists is that, with a large segment of American Jewry being the exception, most Jews receive a good, basic understanding of the Old Testament text. They have a greater or lesser degree of knowledge of the Old Testament Scriptures, depending on their background.

Hence, at some time after God Raptures the Church, He will then save 144,000 Jews from the Twelve Tribes, from around the world. These Jews will already speak the languages needed. They will already have a basic knowledge of the Old Testament text. They will need only a short period of time to gain some New Testament knowledge. So, they could then begin proclaiming the gospel in a very short period of time.

During the first half of the Tribulation, God will evangelize the world by means of 144,000 Jews and thus fulfill the prophecy found in Matthew 24:14: And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come.

2. The Results of the Worldwide Revival—Revelation 7:9–17

After these things I saw, and behold, a great multitude, which no man could number, out of every nation and of all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, arrayed in white robes, and palms in their hands; and they cry with a great voice, saying; Salvation unto our God who sits in the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the angels were standing round about the throne, and about the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, These that are arrayed in white robes, who are they, and whence came they? And I say unto him, My lord, you know. And he said to me, These are they that come out of the great tribulation, and they washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God; and they serve him day and might in his temple: and he that sits on the throne shall spread his tabernacle over them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun strike upon them, not any heat: for the Lamb that is in the middle of the throne shall be their shepherd, and shall guide them unto fountains of waters of life: and God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes.

Following the vision of the 144,000 Jews, the next thing John saw was myriads and myriads of Gentiles, as well as other Jews, who have come to a saving knowledge of the Savior during the Tribulation. The connecting link is the phrase, After these things, and it is chronological and shows a cause and effect relationship between the first and second parts of Revelation 7.

C. To Break the Will of the Holy People

The third purpose for the Tribulation is found in Daniel 12. Beginning in chapter 11, Daniel has been given a vision of what conditions will be like for his people, Israel, during the Tribulation. The vision of the Jews in the Tribulation continues into chapter 12 and terminates at verse 4.

Then, in Daniel 12:5–7, a question is raised as to exactly how long these terrible conditions will be allowed to continue: Then I, Daniel, looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on the brink of the river on this side, and the other on the brink of the river on that side. And one said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that lives for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and a half; and when they have made an end of breaking in pieces the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

The terrible judgments of the Tribulation must continue, Daniel is told, until the power of the will of the holy people is shattered to pieces, until they turn away from trying to establish their own righteousness and seek the righteousness of God through Jesus the Messiah. Basically, then, the third purpose can be restated as to bring about Israel’s national regeneration.

While Daniel 12 states the third purpose, Ezekiel 20:33–38 states exactly how this third purpose will be accomplished: As I live, says the Lord Jehovah, surely with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out, will I be king over you. And I will bring you out from the peoples, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out; and I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there will I enter into judgment with you face to face. Like as I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I enter into judgment with you, says the Lord Jehovah. And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant; and I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me; I will bring them forth out of the land where they sojourn, but they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.

In this passage, Ezekiel draws a simile with the Exodus. At the Exodus under Moses, God brought the entire nation of Israel out of the land of Egypt and into the wilderness of the Sinai Peninsula. God’s plan and program for Israel in the Sinai was to accomplish two things: first, they were to receive the Law of Moses; and secondly, they were to build the Tabernacle through which much of the Law could then be maintained. With these two things accomplished, they were to press on and enter into the Promised Land. However, because of a long series of rebellions and murmurings against God’s revealed will, finally, in a place called Kadesh Barnea, right at the border of the Promised Land itself, God entered into judgment with His people. This divine judgment was that those who had come out of the land of Egypt would now have to continue wandering in the wilderness for forty years. During that forty year period, all those who came out of Egypt except for two men, Joshua and Caleb, and those under the age of twenty would die in the wilderness. Forty years later, it would be a new nation, a nation that was born as free men in the wilderness, not as slaves in Egypt, that would enter the Promised Land under Joshua.

Ezekiel says that a similar thing will occur in the future: God will begin to regather His people from all parts of the world, a regathering that has been observed with the present, modern Jewish State of Israel. However, at some point God will again enter into judgment with His people. By means of the Tribulation judgments, the rebels will be purged out, and the unbelievers will be purged and regenerated. They will turn away from seeking to establish their own righteousness and will seek the righteousness of God through Yeshua the Messiah, and this will bring about their national regeneration. The Jews and the Beginning of the Tribulation

The second area of this study concerns the Jewish role at the beginning of the Tribulation. Two key passages bear this out: Daniel 9:24–27 and Isaiah 28:14–22.

A. Daniel 9:24–27

Verses 1–23 provide the introduction to the Seventy Sevens prophecy. The background is given in verses 1–2, where Daniel states that he had been studying the Book of Jeremiah as well as some other prophets, such as Isaiah. Daniel knew from his study that the Babylonian Captivity was to be seventy years and that the seventy years were nearly up. Daniel also knew from his study that the prerequisite for setting up the Kingdom would be Israel’s confession of her sins. Assuming that the Babylonian Captivity would be immediately followed by the Kingdom, Daniel prayed a prayer of confession for Israel’s sins in verses 3–19. In verses 20–23, the angel Gabriel was sent to Daniel to reveal the timing of the program of God that would bring in the Kingdom. In a play upon words, he informed Daniel that it was not going to be seventy years, but seventy sevens of years before the Kingdom would be established.

The Prophet Daniel is given his famous vision of the seventy weeks, or better, the Seventy Sevens, the 490 years that God has decreed upon the Jewish people in verses 24–27: Seventy weeks are decreed upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. However, there are still seven years left of this prophetic time clock over Israel. These last seven years are often called “The Seventieth Week of Daniel.” It is the same seven years as the seven years of the Great Tribulation.

The question that must now be asked is: What, exactly, will start the Tribulation or what, exactly, will start these last seven years ticking away? The answer is found in Daniel 9:27: And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week: and in the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease; and upon the wing of abominations shall come one that makes desolate; and even unto the full end, and that determined, shall wrath be poured out upon the desolate.

Breaking down this verse gives the exact picture of what it is talking about. First, the opening line reads: And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week. The pronoun he in verse 27 refers back to its nearest antecedent, the prince that shall come, found in verse 26. In other words, the prince that shall come in verse 26 and the he who makes a covenant in verse 27 are one and the same person; a person better known today in evangelical circles as the Antichrist.

The passage reads: And he, the Antichrist, shall make a firm covenant with many for one week, one seven. The beginning point of the last seven years or the start of the Tribulation is the signing of a Seven Year Covenant between Israel and the Antichrist. It cannot be stressed too strongly at this point that it will not be the Rapture of the Church that will begin the Tribulation. The Bible teaches, without any doubt, that the Rapture will occur some time before the Tribulation starts. While the Rapture will occur some time before the Tribulation, it does not begin the Tribulation. The Rapture may come just before the Tribulation starts, but it could also come ten, twenty, thirty years or more before the Tribulation starts. The Rapture could very well come today, but if it does, that does not mean the Tribulation will start tomorrow. The world stage is not yet set for the Tribulation to begin. While the Rapture could occur at any time, the starting point of the Tribulation is only when a Seven-Year Covenant has been signed between Israel and the Antichrist.

There are four points in verse 27 that will be crucial to the understanding of this study. First: he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week. A covenant is made with many, but not with all. There will be a segment of the Jewish people who will refuse to have anything to do with the covenant. The covenant is made with many, which must include the leadership of Israel who have the power to sign covenants of this nature, but it will not be made with all.

The second point is: in the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease. Although the covenant is made to last for seven years, it will be broken at the halfway point. At the halfway point, after 3½ years, the covenant will be broken. This is the same point that is made in Revelation 11:1–2.

The third point is: upon the wing of abominations shall come one that makes desolate. As a result of the breaking of the covenant and the cessation of the sacrificial system, desolations and abominations will fall upon the Jewish people. The word abominations in Hebrew refers to “images” or “idols,” meaning that an image of the Antichrist will be set up in the Temple Compound. This is also spoken of in Daniel 12:11 and Matthew 24:5. The image itself is spoken of in Revelation 13:14–15. The one that makes desolate is the Antichrist, who will cause desolations to fall upon the Jewish people.

And the fourth point is: even unto the full end, and that determined. The phrase even unto the full end is a Hebrew word that means “to finish” or “to complete.” The word determined means “to be decreed beforehand,” because the events spelled out in Daniel 9:27 were already prophesied and decreed long before the Tribulation. This is seen in Isaiah 10:23 and 28:22. Furthermore, the phrase also means that the Tribulation will not go a single day beyond its predeterimed duration. It will end on the exact day. The same point is made in Matthew 24:22. This does not mean that the Tribulation will last less that seven years; rather, it will not be allowed to last a single day beyond its allotted time of exactly seven years. The last phrase is: shall wrath be poured out upon the desolate. The word translated desolate can also be translated as “a desolator.” If taken to mean “desolate,” it refers to the Jewish people during the second half of the Tribulation, when wrath is poured out upon the desolate. If it refers to “a desolator,” it refers to the Antichrist and to his destruction at the Second Coming on the very last day of the seventieth seven.

Again, the act that will begin the Tribulation is the signing of this Seven Year Covenant. This Seven Year Covenant is viewed by Daniel 9:27 from a human perspective. From man’s perspective, it will be a Seven Year Covenant that will not last as long as it was intended to.

B. Isaiah 28:14–22

God’s perspective of the covenant is viewed in these verses. God’s viewpoint of the many who enter the covenant is given in verse 14: Wherefore hear the word of Jehovah, ye scoffers, that rule this people that is in Jerusalem.

God calls the many, the leadership of Israel, who enter the covenant, scoffers. He considers them mockers rather than serious leaders.

Verse 15 gives the reason God considers them scoffers and provides His viewpoint of the covenant itself: Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves.

In vivid terms, it can be seen here why God calls the leaders scoffers. It is obvious that the leaders of Israel will go into this covenant in order to obtain some measure of security and to escape the overflowing scourge. The figure of a flood, when used symbolically, is always a symbol of a military invasion. Hence, the leaders of Israel will believe that by entering the covenant, they will be free from any further military invasions. However, God declares that this is not a covenant of life, but a covenant with death. It is not a covenant of Heaven, but a covenant of Hell. Rather than gaining security, they will receive a strong measure of insecurity. Also from verse 15, the reason Israel enters into the covenant with the Antichrist is not because they accept him as the messiah. This is a common misconception among many believers. The Scriptures nowhere state that Israel will accept the Antichrist as the messiah. That will not be the case. Instead, they simply enter into a security agreement with the Antichrist. That is all the covenant means. It means, of course, that they will be trusting the Antichrist for their security, instead of God. But again, nowhere in Scripture does Israel accept the Antichrist as the messiah.

The very same things seen in Daniel 9:27 will also be seen in this context. For instance, the non many who will refuse to have anything to do with the covenant are mentioned in verse 16: therefore thus says the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone of sure foundation: he that believes shall not be in haste.

There will be a segment of the Jewish people who will reject participation in the covenant. So again, the makers of the covenant, the many or the majority, will also include the leadership of Israel, but there will be a minority of Jewish people who will reject having anything to do with the covenant whatsoever. They will not be in any hurry to enter into it nor to identify themselves with it.

Then, in verses 17–22, the same three results are found as in Daniel 9:27. First, in verses 17–18, the covenant is broken, followed by the military invasions they hoped to escape: And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet; and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

In verse 18, as in Daniel 9:27, the covenant will be broken at some point during the Tribulation, specifically, in the middle of the Tribulation, and it will be, as Isaiah says, annulled.

Secondly, desolations falling upon the Jewish people are described in verses 19–20: As often as it passes through, it shall take you; for morning by morning shall it pass through, by day and by night: and it shall be nought but terror to understand the message. For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

Rather than having security, they will have insecurity; instead of being exempt from military invasions, they now become subject to military invasions. In verse 20, this insecurity is pictured as tremendous discomfiture and is illustrated in two ways. First, it is like a man trying to stretch himself out on a bed, but the bed is too short for him. Secondly, it is like a man trying to wrap himself in a blanket to protect himself from the cold, but the blanket is too small to cover all of his body. In place of security, there is insecurity. In place of comfort, there is discomfort.

The third result is the wrath of God, emphasized in verses 21–22: For Jehovah will rise up as in mount Perazim, he will be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his strange work, and bring to pass his act, his strange act. Now therefore be ye not scoffers, lest your bonds be made strong; for a decree of destruction have I heard from the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, upon the whole earth.

The Old Testament gives many names for what is now called the Tribulation, and in verse 21, there are two such names: Jehovah’s strange work and Jehovah’s strange act. It is given these two unusual names because of the closing words of verse 22: for a decree of destruction have I heard from the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, upon the whole earth. When this covenant is signed on earth, in Heaven, God issues a decree of destruction … upon the whole earth. This decree of destruction is contained in that Seven Sealed Scroll of Revelation 5. As each seal is broken, there is massive destruction of the earth’s surface and massive destruction of the earth’s population. First, He dealt with the specific event in verse 15 that will mark the beginning of the second half of the Tribulation. Jesus gives a warning sign to those Jews living during the middle of the Tribulation: when they see the abomination of desolation … standing in the holy place. The Abomination of Desolation will involve two stages. The first stage will be when the Antichrist takes over the Jewish temple, sits down in the Holy of Holies, and declares himself to be the one true god (2 Thes. 2:3–10). The second stage is when the False Prophet makes an image of the Antichrist and stands it up in the Holy of Holies (Rev. 12:13–17; Dan. 12:11). This will be the signal that the second and worse half of the Tribulation has begun.

Secondly, in verses 16–20, the Abomination of Desolation will be the signal for the Jews to flee out of the Land, and get out of Israel quickly! This flight is also recorded in Revelation 12:13–17. The tenor of this entire passage is the necessity of speed and urgency, without a second to lose. If they happen to be on the housetop, they must not take the few minutes necessary to come down the ladder, go into the house, and take any possession. As soon as their foot touches the ground, they must get out of Israel. Or, if they happen to be out plowing in the field and hear of this event, they must not take the few minutes it may take to go back to their living quarters and take so much as a coat. From the place where they have been plowing, they must get out of Israel. The emphasis is on speedy flight.

In verse 20, they are urged to pray that when this event occurs—and occur it must—it should not happen either in winter or on a Sabbath day. Why not in the winter? It seldom ever snows in Israel, so what could be the problem of winter? The reason for this prayer is that the Jews will be escaping toward the mountains in the east. There are several differences between the United States and the State of Israel. The United States receives rain in all four seasons: summer, fall, winter, and spring. But this is not the case in Israel, where the rains begin in the latter part of October. Rains will fall in November, December, January, and February; they will begin dying out in March, and they will totally die out by mid April. From mid April to mid October, not one drop of rain will fall in the entire country. Another difference between the United States and Israel is the manner by which highways are built. When Americans build a highway and come to a water gully, even if it is a dry water gully, they will still build a bridge across it. That is not the case in Israel, where the roads are paved into the water gullies and out again. These water gullies are technically called wadis. These wadis are dry all summer and most of the winter. However, in the winter months when rain falls in the mountains of Israel, water starts rushing down these wadis or water gullies with tremendous force, carrying tons of rock and debris, washing the highways out, and killing any thing or any one found in the way. Israelis enjoy hiking in these wadis during the dry months because they are picturesque and look like miniature Grand Canyons. Often they continue hiking into the fall months not realizing the rainy season has begun. It may not be raining where they are, but it has begun raining elsewhere. Before they know what is happening, they drown in much water, rock, and debris. Every fall in the newspapers from Israel there are reports of just such occurrences. A rather vivid example occurred some years ago when forty French tourists were walking through a wadi to see the city of Petra. It was not raining where they were, but it had begun to rain elsewhere. Within thirty minutes, thirty eight of these forty French tourists drowned. From this incident alone, it is easy to see why the Jews should pray that it be not in the winter. When they escape, the Jews will have to escape by means of these wadis. If this event occurs in the winter, it will make their escape that much more difficult.

They are also urged to pray that when this event occurs it will not be on a Sabbath day. But why not on a Sabbath? In Israel, all public transportation closes down and no trains or buses run. Unless an Israeli has his own automobile, escape will be that much more difficult. An example of this difficulty was demonstrated in the Yom Kippur War of 1973. The Arabs attacked on a holy day, when public transportation was nonexistent. This made it especially difficult for the Israelis to mobilize their forces and get them to the front lines. So they are urged to pray that is does not happen on a Sabbath day.

In verses 21–22, the reason for the flight is because of worldwide anti Semitism. And she was delivered of a son, a man child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and unto his throne.

These verses summarize the life of the Messiah from just before His birth to His Ascension. John sees two signs in the heavens. In verses 1–2, Israel is pictured as a woman arrayed with the sun … moon … and … stars. All this goes back to Joseph’s famous dream in Genesis 37:9–11 where the sun represents Jacob, the moon represents Rachel, the symbol of Jewish motherhood, and the twelve stars represent the twelve sons of Jacob, who fathered the Twelve Tribes of Israel. This woman represents the nation of Israel, just before the birth of the Messiah.

In verse 3, John described the second sign, the great red dragon, which is Satan in all his fierceness. The seven heads and ten horns represent the final form of the Fourth Gentile World Empire, now shown to be under Satan’s control and authority. The seven diadems point to a concept of conquest.

In verse 4, the two signs come together.
